Arrival of the Steamer Atalanta from London and Harr ivltti Twenty dates of Cholera on Board-Nine, teen Death During: the Voyage Over Fifty Ca.ee of Cholera while iTIakllig the Trip. Tbe cboler, o long feared tod expected, bas finally sailed oer the sea and grimly taken up its camp jit outside of our city. Djwd in tbe lower bay aeteamer fliunts tba thretteuing hospital flag of warning, and in its iu fee ted bold reeks the poisonous contagion. Tbe demon of the pestilence count, bis victims there nd bideä bin time to rash abroad for new fields and conquests. Tbere were rumora whimpered About the city on Thursday evening at a late hour, but the press was unwilling to cause what might be a fslse alarm, eo uncertain were tbe outgivings. Tbe fact of the arrival of a steamer with cholera on board ia now eo certain and partially known that it is better to spread the whole facts before the public. In doing (to, there is one consolation; the assurance that the cholera, as it bas appeared on that eteamship, is eminently susceptible to treatment and is quite curable. ARRIVAL OF TOE INFECTXD STEAMS! IP. About seven o'clock on Thursday evening, tbe teim.'hip Atalanta, of Messrs. Rowland k As pin wall's Liverpool line, arrived in the lower bay, from London and Havre, with fire hundred and four steerage passengers. She came up to the quarantine laciin, off Staten Island and let go her anchor. Dr. Swinburne, the health officer of the port was then in this eity for tbe parpooe of consulting with Dr. Sijre and other!, in relation to measures to be taken in ease) of the appearauce of cbolera. Tbe duties of the health officer, it is aid, close with ucset. Dr. Burden, tbe assistant health oflieer, waa left in charge. MEDICAL BELT WANTED. Captain llnkham.of the Atlanta, after a short time, sent op a rocket as a signal for help, but it w es paid the signal was not obeerved, Dr. Burden bating lett tbe ofiice during the evening and gone to bis residence. Aftor waiting a while longer. Captain Pinkham sent a boat on shore, with a messenger, after the health officer, to notify biua of tbe fact of cholera on tbe vessel, and ask tor medical assistance, as the surgeon in charge on board was nearly worn out with his irjerseint Ubors. Dr. liurdctt then went on board. lie was met by tbe eurgeou of the AtalanU, a German, who Mated the facts, and tbe treatment be had gireD tu the patients. THE CUOLiaa DllIXU THE TRIP. It appears that roost of the passengers were taken on board at Havre. The Atalanta left London en the 10th and Havre on the 12th. The majority of the Havre pjsengers came in the steerage, and from seme of them the cholera developed. On the first day out, a child was taken severely sick. Tbe disease rapidly developed, and the symptoms soon showed unmistakably the presence of cholera. On the next day the child died. Tbe body was sunk in the ocean, and the ship went on from that moment a floating p't house, freighted with the most terrible weapon of death. Tbe surgeon, it is said, thought proper, to avoid alarm, t) conceal tbe fact from the paseoger?, that cholera was the cause of death, although some of the more intelligent suspected it to be so. Käorts were made, however, to disinfect the ship, and keep it in as clean a condition as possible; also, to enforce sanitary regulations among the pa.eugers. ULTHT CONDITIO or TUE STLLEAUK. To a great eiteut this was found impossible. Many of the steerage passengers seemed to debet; in being as filthy as possible, and kept their quarters in tbe worst possible condition. They manifested but little anxiety, even alter the presence of cholera became well known. Bl HALS AT SEA. One after another others began to sicken. Another and another death occurred, generally after brief attacks, and the dead were buried in the ocean in less tban an hour after they bad breathed their last, the usual bnrial services at sea beiog used in each ease. TUE CUOLEEA CTBABLE. Fifty or sitty cases of attacks of cholera, it Is said, occurred dariag the voyage. Of this number fifteen died and the remainder recov
ered after. a more or ! severe illnew. The far t
of the recorery cf so rntny, most of wlmni seemed to entirely regiu their he itli. is another evidence of the:fct Htei bv Dr. Sayre, at n .. .i II., .i,u previous mettmgoi me ucmu iuiu!ioncrs. that cholera in w inapien. stages is rntüriy a!wave curable. If they could recover in the close. filthy, and uavectilateJ nu oi a crowded ship, rocking and swaying on tee wave, mere would seem to be everv chance for successful treitmeat in any ordinarily vell-ifgulated part of a town or citv. At the time when the as!.i-'Af t health officer Erst visited the Atilaata, there were eieren steerage passengers pro-itted by the disease, aud others presented the symptoms ia acumparatirely mild form. Mo-t of tliem seemed to bear tbeir symptoms with much fortitude, and all kect their spirits up in a manner that must bave materially assisted to lessen the effect of the contagion. TBE ATUAÜTA T0 TH,: L0Af " BATOrders were at once given to the Atalanta to proceed to the lower bay, which were promptly carried out, and the infected vessel now remains fifteen miles outside the city. THE FAS3EXEEE3 HOT ALARUID. Tte passengers are all detained on board. They dou't exhibit any unusual alarm, but, on the contrary, beguile tbe time in various occupations aud amusements. When the health offi cer visited ber be found some singing, and ia the cabin a group of passengers were entertaining themselves by listening to music from an ac cord eon by one of their number. They were careful concerning their diet and hibits, but it seemed to be tacitly agreed that they were not to allow their conversation to dwell on the fesrful subject of pestilence araongthem. No case of cholera occurred among the cabin passengers, the disease beiug confined exclusively to tbe steerage. THE HOt VITAL f 1I1P SENT DOV.f . The hospital ship Falcon, or Florence Nightingale, has been withdrawn from her station in the Lower Day since tbe llhb, as it seemed to be supposed there would be no more occupation for her during the winter. She was therefore laid up at Red Hook, foot of Van Brunt Etrett, Brooklyn. As soon as possible, however, on ascertaining the existence of cholera, orders were sent to fit out the Nightingale with the necessary stores and provisions, and send her down to take off the sick from the Atalanta. The work was commenced yesterday, and it is expected she will be down there by this morning, in charge of Dr. Theodore Walser. No communication with the ships will be allowed, except, of course, by tbe physicians, and arrangements have beeu made for furnishing from day to day a list of those sick and dead, and an accouut of the condition generally. THE CONDITIO LAST EVE.NINQ. Up to last evening nineteen deaths had ocurred on the Atalanta, and two patients were in a state of "collapse," which betokens immediate dissolution. There were then twenty cases ot cholera on board. CONDITION Or TUE COLNTRT. . The medical men here are very reticent in giving opioioDS on the cholera. The fact that it so often seems to defy all known principles of medical science and sanitary precautions naturally makes them cautious. It is a fearful king that knows no precedent bat ftself, and is all tbe .more terrible because it is eo little understood. If it once establishes itself in this ity, in its present bad sanitary condition, no one can tell bow many may fall at the very first stroke. It may sweep through the crowded and filthy tenement houses like tbe angel of death over tbe Assyrian camp. On board the only disinfectant that could immediately be procured was chloride of lime. This was need extensively, but it ssemed that yesterday afternoon the number of caees was etill increasing. With our (iirty streets, and so many of our inhabitants careless regarding unitary regulations, a condition of things is fostered on which the infection of cholera cannot but fasten. In connection with this subject, the following from an English paper may be found of interest: Dr. Buliar, physician to the Uoyal South Hants Infirmary, publishes the results of his treatment of a case of cholera which came under his notice on the 14th. The case was that of a laborer, forty-two years of age, who, when Dr. Buliar saw him, was in the collapsed etage of the disease, livid and cold, and his pulse hardly perceptible. The doctor had him immediately seated at a hip bath of very hot water, with three quarters of a powdered mustard in it, placing his feet in a hot water foot bath, with a quarter of a pound of mustard. The water was as bot as the hands could bear, almost scalding bot, and some little force and much persuasion were necessary to keep him in it at first from its beat. In half an hour he had become warmer, bis face less livid and not collapsed, his pulse stronger. He was put to bed with hot tins to bis hands and feet, well covered with blankets, and felt comfortable and wishing to sleep In an hour there was so much reaction that tbere good hopes; in four hours he was safe, and on Sunday be was going on very well. While in the bath he drank as much milk and water with lumps of ice in it as be could take, in the intervals he swallowed small lumps of ice, and after reaction pleLtv of weak broth and iced milk, and the feverish reaction the next day was slight. ANOTHER STEAMER BEEAINED AT QUARANTINE. We have received the following communication from Dr. Burdett, deputy health otneer, in relation to the anchoring ot the steamship Europe at Quarantine. Quarantine. S. I., Nov. 3. This is to certify that I have visited the French steamship Europe, and discovered no conitgious or infectious disease od board. The vessel is merely detained in Quatanttne for observation. A. S. Blrdett, M. D., Deputy Health OlBcer. Ti:ititiitLE: ticagi:iv I visctA Hoy shoot lioth of Iii l'arcnt, and then IvilU 11 1 hum If. Frum th. Mil auk if Seatinel.J A shocking tragedy occurred in the town of Caledonia, Racine county, on the night of tbe 1st inst. A boy named John Stitoky, tbe only son of a respectable Bohemian, residing near the Chicago and Milwaukie Kaiiroad track, in the northern part of Caledonia, Racine couuty, committed one of the most atrocious and cold blooded acts of combined parricide aud homicide that has ever been recorded ia the annals of crime. The circumstances are as follows-. Tbe father who was a farmer in excellent circumstances, had been laboring in the woods during the day, and bad come In at nightfall for his supper. Tbe meal was prepared, and tbe mother called John, who is an only eon. about nineteen years old, to come in to tea. The a gel couple sat down to their meal, thinking the boy would presently join them, when suddenly a shot was tired through tbe wiodowpane of the room, and the father was struck by a ball in the left arm, completely shattering it at the elbow. The mother started up, and at the same iustant anotner report resounded, and she was struck in the abdomen by a bullet, which passed completely through ber body. In another moment another discharge wm heard in the yard, and the father, who, with parental instincts, divined the nature aud effect of this third shot, summoned strength to get out of doors , where be found bis son weltering in his tlood, and already gasping Lis last. He had murdered both bis aged parents with the two barrels of one gun, and had shot himself with another weapon, ending his life almost instantly. We say murdered, for it is not probable that either will recover, though both were liviug when our informent left. The mother has doubtle breathed ber lt ere now, and it is conidered doubtful whether tbe father, who is orer sixty years of age, can survive bis injuries and the bock of bis grief. t2TThe Great Northern Railway in England, is going to introduce a system of consuming the smoke of the locomotives, and thereby, at the same time, manufacture the necessary gas for lightxg the traia.
