An euterprisui onu is entitled to commendation, and Dr. Mi.ler is an enterprising man. He has crccteJ upou tbe west aide of Illinois street, this season, ten store-rooms, which are now occupied. 'I he ix.uib room of tbe ten is occupied by Mr. C. M. Ii gfi". wboe advertisement appears in the likKALU lie ba an elecraut drug store. Mr. lliijs is horn Cincinnati. In add it ton to the rooms on tbe west aide, tbe Doctor is now enclosinc ii rooms on the east side of Illinois aire', which will 000 be ready for occupancy. Surely we are becoming a city. Maioa's Cotar We have to congratulate the city on tbe comparative goo J order of the time. N t thsl crime andIaw breaking do not oivur at ail, l r tLal Mill always be uu iuipoiibii.'y smjti tbe frail eons and daughters of Avijiu. But bt e wish to state is that cur c tj will compare favorably with any other for tbe peate and good order of its citixens. Our II itor should be released from tbe duty of listeL-ii.-to all ihte petty infractionsof the city laws. V hat we Leed is a Tolice Court with its elected judge, and a Board of Aldermen in sdJition to our City Council. Tbe Mayor would then best liberty to attend to bis legitimate duties in tbe conservation of tbe general interests of the city. As our present municipal system is organized, bis dutie are by far too onerous and serve only to cramp bim for tbe want of time. Saturdav's digest of offenses and offenders is composed in tbe following: Horace Makepeace peaceful name for to lawlefS an act deposited filth in an alley and waa Cned $l and costs. Four srrests for intoxication were made, of wbich two were committed, and two discharged oq the payment if the fine and coits.
f?7" Tbe meiern Cupid i a ery different lostitotion from the one onr mythological ance tors used to clars as one of tbe Deities. Tbe popular retreat for their Cupid was a roebiuh or something of that kind. He tired to surprise the unwary aid take them captive at once. A simple and unadorned deity be was, and hi darts were wont to pierce the heart of the unsuspecting without reference to rank or station. Not so with your modern Cupid, lie is the most care ful and artful intriguer iti the world. He dwells in jeweled drawers amoo diamonds or tre iury vaults. He wears a jeweled jacket and bis wings are made of "seven-thirties" of a high denomination. Coquetry is one of bis strongest weapons, and bis approaches are systematic. He has much to do with "incomes," and places great strens on "expectations." He is calculating in tbe extreme and does not know of such a thing as "love in a cottage." Thx Wiathh DjII skies and heavy atmosphere have been tbe almost unvarying serial pro
gramme for the week pa.t. Saturday betrayed unmistakable indications of a change of pro gramme. In the aiternoon snow begin to de scend, timidly and hesitatingly, as it were, at first, ana for sometime the absorbing capacity of tbe surface of tbe carta kept even pace with the fall of tbe fleecy crystals. Toward nightfall the sqow increased in its iutensity, and fairly thickened the air. Ltrth give up its resistance, and accepted tbe irexorable decree of winter ia bis mantle of white. Tbe wiud blew, and a rapid descent of tbe nercury in the thermometer was apparent. There could be no mistake iu the meteorojcical indications. They bt tokened tbe pttent fact fiat winter bad set ia in earnest. An aterprising news writer telegrsghing a Cincinnati paper, several weeks ao, said that snow hid fallen "the first ol the season." We did not see it for ourselves, but as be is a veracious chronicler he niutbe supposed to have told the truth. But this time we have hsd tbe ocular prwof. Yesterday mornibg tbe uo rolled up in unclouded splendor and not a trace of the fretful mood of the preceding d ty was visible itve a plight ptt:h-work of eaor, which the morning sun rapidlv drank up with his beams. A glorious and bracing atmospherelike a life-iviDg cordial gave promise of a smiling autumnal day. But wioter is a fretful spirit, full of uarest, and a clouls morning i-i frequently the harbinger of a stormy day. A. VI I'M KV I.: TN. Metropolitan Theatre Mrs. Waller closed a succeaalul engagement of two weeks on Saturday eveniDg, appearing in the play of "Joan of Arc." It performed to an overflowing bouse. Mrs. Waller's rendition of the "Maid of Orleans" was in her best style, and was a fitting conclusion to her meritorious engagemeLt. Wherever the lady goes ehe is pure of the good wishes of her Indianapolis audiences. "The People's lawyer" was the alterpiece, and waa performed in excellent ttyle. We have to congratulate Mr. W'Mte on bis "Solon Shingle." "Solon Shingle" is not a bundle of oddities grouped together with do higher purpose than to secure a hearty laugh, but is a consistent character all tbe way through, and Mr. F. O. White shows himself equal to the occasion. Mr. llmi as the impassioned advocate and high-minded young man was capital. The picee was generally well rendered. Mr. Bonham's rendition of the part of "John Ellrley" showed an upward tendency in bis dramatic growth, and arguetf well for bis eucce?8 in tbe future. Miss Blanche De Bar puts in an appearance tonight, and wilLiuauguiate a revival of the legitimate English comedy. She opens iu Goldsmith's comeJj of She Stoops to Conquer," known wherever there exists an appreciation for those sterling comedies that hive survived the wear of years, and acquire an additional relish with the lapse of time. Tu secure a seat it will be neesäsary to go early. La Rue's CL&eat Waa Show. This wonderful exhibition will be in this city next Wednes day, and remain three days. In addition to the regular performance, Mr. L Kue will appear in a' number of comic personations, in which he stands unrivalled. To show the eetimtion in which he is held abroad, we give below an extract from tbe Pittsburg Dispatch: "La Rue's Entertainment continues to be tbe wonder o( the town, and no wonder it should be. Tbe Major b notified Mr. L Rae that the crowds desiring to see his S:ratopution must not be kept standing ou tbe sidewalk, waiting lor admission to tbe Miooic Hall, and thtt be mut open his doors hi 4 o'clock in tbe aiternoon, or something will have to be done. Mr. L Rue says the only thing he cm do is i ) remain in the city loug euough to gratify thecuriosity of everybody, rfow as ever j bod v who gets oue sight at Mr. L Hue's walking army, and whj hetr hi-i inimitable humor, wants to bear and see agiin. we do uot undertind bow tbe Mayor's benevolent desire to rid tbe sidewalk is to be gratified. We go in for La Rue's Great War Show, because it is a show " LiTiuiOLS. Quite an amusing trial, or rather eries of trial, occurred in this city list week, worthy of especial notice. About one (1) year ago, oce Joseph Leslie, a brother of Frank Leslie, of "Pictorial Newspaper" and "Fashion P.ate" notoriety, came to this city from St. Louis, and obtaicei a divorce fiota bis con.ort. Without further ceremony, and despite his previoua unauspicious experience in marital matter", he married another woman. Mrs Leslie No. 1 bearing of the state of affairs, sped to this place "on the wiegs of the wicd," and exclaiming in that cla.ical Teutonic phrase whUh b-ts passed into history, "Who's peen bere fince Ish peen gone?" immediately commenced proceedings against Mrs. Leslie No. 2, by invadiog her place of habitation. But the latter proved eqeul to the emergency, and mde a vigorous and successful resistance to the onslaught of the irate femIe, seiz ng a broom-tick, (ibe proverb al weapon of womankind the world over) sbeeo btlaboreJ Mrs. Leslie No. 1 over tbe back that she was compelled to beat a precipitate retreat. No. 1 then repaired tj the Mayor's Court and swore out a warrant for assault and bittery agiinst No. 2, and the battered" virago was consoled by the asseBi! t oi a b. e against her adversary. No. "2, not t b octdone, replied to No. 1 by a counter maLUJUver ani had her arraigned before E-q. Sullivan tj "ketp the peace." She succeeded, and No. 1 was erjoined to desUt from further forays against tbe peace and quiet ol No. 2. No. 1, not yet satisfied, proposes to still further invoke tbe aid of tbe "sacred authority of the law." The various trials between tbeie termgtnts occupied three days. Two of our niot distinguished di?cip!es of Lycurgus were employed in tbee case, but from motives of prudence their names are withheld, as e do cot think it would be safe to jeopardize their physical integrity b,y awakening against them the terrible resentment of tbee two belligerent petticoat disputaLts. 2TWhi!st the city improves generally, Massachusetts avenue keeps ahead, as we notice the "Capital Drug Store," at tke corner of Vermont strett, has been greatly enlarged, and is cow one of our first-class drug stores in every reaped. 3Mf.
