SATURDAY JULY 28. gCjpWe intend enlarging the CentiNel to a more decent size, immediately ; its present appearance being an eye-sorc to the Editor, as much as to its most respectable patrons and we hereby mako this fair offer to delinquent subscribers ; that, if those who have taken this paper without being able or willing to pay for it, will send us their names, they shall be stricken off our list, and no questions asked in future To those reflecting few who have always been prompt in complying with the necessary terms, we cannot offer too much gratitude ; and we frankly say, there arc none others whom we wish to print for.
Gen. John Tipton, of Indiana, and Samuel M'Clintock, Esq. of Illinois, Commissioners for defining the line between the two states, arrived in town last week, having completed their laborious, disagreeable, and toilsome business. 'They are again in tolerable health, after having suffered hardships and privations sufficient to sicken any persons of common nerve and constitution. Some of their assistants are yet verv ill with the fatigues and exhaustion of the service. The whole concern would often be for days wading thro' ponds and marshes, beneath a broiling sun and beset with myriads of piratical flies and satirical musquctoes, and spend their nights amidst every species of exposure. The following is a brief sketch of their progress, politely furniihed us by the Commissioners. " Left Vinccnncs on the 29th May With a due North line which last leaves the north west shore of the fVabash,4o miles from Yincennes ; from which point commenced the line dividing the States of Indiana and Illinois. The Country is mostly well timbered, and soil good, for the dUtancc of 4-3 miles. After crossing the Vermillion a few miles, intersected Grand Prairie, the first 23 miles of which is j;ood, dry soil, afterwards it becomes either broken and poor, or low and marshy. Two branches of the Kankakee river pass thro' the Grand Prairie. At 123 miles from where we left the Habash, we came to the main Kankakee, it Chains wide, and navigable for Crafts of considerable burthen. North of this stream lie a chain of almost impassable ponds, which lie nearly parallel with the river for the distance of 50 or CO miles, and from 3 to 5 miles wide. From those ponds to Lake Michigan the distance of 3G miles, the Country is most generally poor sandy ridges, covered with scrubby Oak timber and Whortleberry bushes, or low, marshy Prairies. Arrived at the Lake on the 2d of July, 205 miles from Yincennes, and 159 miles from where we last left the Wabash. The N. W. corner of the State of Indiana is 3 miles G4 Chains and 14 links in Lake Michigan. The line intersected the Lake 1 1 miles 4 Chains and 46 links west, and 6 miles 15 Chains and 86 links North of the Southern extremity." The Commissioners further state that they were much disappointed in the appearance of the Lake Shores hoping to find them composed of high and dry irounds ; whereas they found nothing

We were wrong, last week, when wo said that the Receiver at this place had received instructions from government for his guide under the new law. At that date, neither mark of pen nor stamp of type had he received. The waggon loads of books and sheets we mentioned were intended solely for the Register. By the last mail, we hear, he was greeted with some of the necessaries, and it is very probable that God knows when he will get the remainder. Great bodies move slowly ; and as they arc all great bodies at Washington, collectively and individually, from the President to the Shoe-Black, from a Secretary to his sixteenth clerk, and all have a hand in furnishing public documents, it is no wonder that the people, " Whose breath has made them, and whose breath can make" must draw so many long breaths before they can be accommodated.
Trial of Speed. We understand that a race will take place on the Vinccnncs Prairie, on the 18th August, (this Saturday three weeks) betweenMajor La. cow's horse, Toby, and a horse called Dolphin, from Kentucky. Distance, 500 yards, and 15 feet given to Toby. These horses are both tine animals, and it is expected some heavy payments will depend on the issue. Col. Mariano, an intelligent gentleman, native of Hal), lately a resident of Lexington, Ky. dropped down and suddenly expired June 10 at Mrs. Blake's door, Pensylvania Avenue, Washington City. He was an accomplished scholar, and an unsuccessful applicant for the Secretaryship to the Florida Commissioners. Public Feeling. At a fourth July dinner, in St. Louis, at Bennets Mansion House, the following toasts were drank among others: The reduction of the Army May the event prove the wisdom of the measure. Our Townsman General Daniel Bissel we hail his return to Missouri with joy, lessened only by the reflection that the cause of it is a striking instance of a nation's ingratitude, evinced through its chief magistrate.
