V S. Laws. Laws, vitally interesting to the people, have been passed at the late session of Congress. On our first page, will be found two, that should be read with particular attention concerning public officers and navigation. This last is peculiarly important. It has been the practice of the British capitalists, (who are backed by their government in every project to injure the U.' S.) tc ship their manufactures to their provinces in our neighborhood, and store them there; and, on any sudden demand, or establishment of a new manufactory among us, (of which they are informed, through their agents here, with almost telegraphic certainty and despatch) to
pout them in a flood upon our cities, and, -through the cursed auction system, (which
was established only to serve the British cause in America) to deluge the country
far and wide, no matter at what sacrifice,
to the utter extinguishment of American
industry. One of the objects of this law is, evidently, to abolish this ruinous
custom, and, we hope it will be promptly
enforced; and that Americans will learn, at last, to be only self-dependent.

Was this circumstance iznown only to a few, it would have been ur duty to have passed it in silence but as all have heard of or remarked it, it is ur peremptory business to notice it, and to say that such conduct is justly condemned and abhorred by every decent citizen of this town. This practice of placarding is inex-

It shows a very base and cowardly disposition, or a light, trilling, thoughtless and envious temper; and betrays a total absence of principle, or a lamentable want of spirit and magnanimity. It proves that a person has a secret enemy, rho wishes to say something in open day, tnit dares not; and therefore crouches beneath the covert of the night, and vents his spleen in darkness, for the returning light to blush at. At night, the wolf leaves his cavern in
