U. S. Liw Printers. A majority of
the members of the House of Representatives haveiforced a bill thro that house, lessening the compensation to mblic printers, and reducing their num
ber to one in each state ! Now, per
sonal interest out of the question, we
think this ono of the weakest, most impolitic mtd despotic acts which could
ever come from the councils of a Re
public. v Tyrants only work in the dark,

&o asaamed of their doms, that they
would limit the knowledge of them to
the circulation oi. one newspaper in an extensii state? or have the sovereign
people no riht to inspect the conduct
oi their servants t or uo these servants
wish to raise their own wages to twelve dollars a day, cgain, and pocket the profits of this miserable retrenchment ?
We never before knew an act passed
Upon such flimsy grounds, in evasion of Such unconquerable arguments ; and we are not surprised at the general indig-
natihn expressed at" it trom Maine to Georgia. It was carried through the House with such barefaced impudence, too bv men rioting in the luxuries cf a voluptuous capital ; who receive ampte mileage, and nhr dollars a day of the people's money while there ! Far more would it be to their own honor, far more to the real i; crest of the people, if the compensation to public printers Were increased, and their number extended to every press in the Union. This point w;is loudly and wnrmly contended for by two third? of the sense and patriotism of the House ; but as a majority of members, it appears, are mvie of (liferent stmT, this measure,
which JS(poleon hi his sternest days would spnrn, and none but such as Ferdinand should adopt ; which carries kingcraft,
priestcraft, an
tram ; uvuch lurs ine people , trom the information most necessary to them, drawing a curtain between them ami their representatives, and shrouding the acts of the latter in darkness this measure passed to a senseless and sickly existence, which, no doubt, the virtue of the Senate will put an end to, and thereby conciliate the insulted spirit of the Country.
tandin, they come out with a niardlv
insinuation against the Representatives' of this district. Now, for the present, we wonld inform the character Vho conduct that pr at, their aiders, abettors,! petty apostates and all, that in political as well as private life, it is .necessary to understand one's own situation ; altho' in this case they may say in their excuse, that the eyes of a bull do not direct his horns, and no morttl should cavil at the ordinances of nature.
It is dangerous, while standing on slip
pery ground, to try to prostrate our
neighbors; and there is anold proverb, in which glass is mentioned, which should be often thought of bv those who are in
the habit of throwing stones. Certain
scribblers should never mention longwinded resolutions ; they may provoke a reference to a few suffocating facts, that may stop their wind, altogether. And now we cive them an unreserved
challenge ; and if they have brains cnough to be honorable, they will act accordingly. We defy them to name one single public act of the last delegation from this district, which had not, directly 1 ie public good for its object ; which was not done, expressly, for the benefit of the people ; and we dare them to prove one single point, in which our delegates swerved from their public dutv
as men, Americans, and REFtJiHilCANS ; and to cite one single district in the state, which sent Representatives of more talents, integrity, intelligence and patriotism. We have net the happy faculty of turning Turk fbr revenge, or Judas for
siiver. e do despise the political tnmelicn : We detest the lurking eoppcrhead that glides through the shrubbery, and fastens his fansrs in the veins of the
industrious husbandman. We trust that
there is sfiil a " redeeming spirit in the
people," to bruise the heads of such ser
pents, and secure their own honor and
prosperity.

with wratntn m some of the Onio. papers.
They appear to think that nature' never
made him a groat man, and to be deter

to be a striking instance of the frailty of
a politician s popularity, which a breath can make and destroy. Whatever be his merits, he has, in the state which he has
selected for his retreat, numerous and powerful enemies, who intend that his
reputation shall not survive his career
