PROPOSALS, For Pi'hlhhinz, in Lexington, Kentucky, A LITKH RT, PERIODICAL Y.OKK, 70 RE ENTITLED, THE WESTliRN REVIEW A V D miscellaneous magazine. THE time, it i In.j.ed, lias at length arrived, w):' ti, pin.i .at! ot the citi.ens of fh. we r ,: is t 'iiiiti y to a periodical work, devoted tu the. ii.t'vesis of literature ami s ie ire. will not be solicited in vain. In the first settlement of a country, when the ateutio;i of it "inhabitants must be almost excijsively directed to the means of providing l.r tiieir pin sical wants, it cannot in (IchI he expected, that learning should flourish : the cu I ! i ation of the fields of literatuie aol h nce must yield, for a time, to the nrore essential employment of procuring the iicce. aiies and conveniences of life. It is evident, however, that the itate of our society is now sufficiently advanced, to admit of a liheral and honorable patronage of literary enterpiize. We have arrived at such a degree of maturity, a to be able at once to discern the importance, and to acquire the means, of mental cultivation. We have ainong us, too. men of literary leisure, both
ahle and dis used to furnish us occasionally a feast for the mind ; and, it is hoped, we are not generally so exclusively devoted to the sordid acquisition of wealth, or to the still more ignoble pursuit of pleasure, as to be destitute either of the taste or the leisure, requisite lor the enjoyment of such a mental repast.- Our country is rich in topics for interesting discussion and scientific remark. Its natural curiosities are abundant and but partially explored. Its political establishments; its infa-it, hut growing, literary institutions tits commercial, agricultural, and manufacturing interests ; its susceptibility of .'internal improvement, and the extent of its natural and acquit ed resources; all claim the attention of the patriot and the scholar. When to these are 'added the exhaustles themes of philosophy, morality, natural and revealed religion, political and domestic economy, p ulology. history, biography and th arts to 'ife how extensive is the field presented for our cultivation ! But our prospect is not bounded even here. We may use O'.r endeavors to add that polish and beauty to the literary character of our countrv, which can result onlv from a popular acquaintance with the noire graceful and orUanienUl departments of learning: and, may it not he said, that less importance has of lak been generally attached to elegant letters than they deserve, even with respect to their influence ifcose faculties of the mind, with which the usually considered as liavii 1 the least Connection ? It will be among tl;e main objects of the work now" proposed, to develope the natural Vi'torv of tiie western states, to cultivate ami improve our literal ? taste, t commu.iicate th; most interesting literary intelligence, an I 1 vindicate, w hile it endeavors to advance, the literary character of our country It wjll contain notices and reviews of new publications. both forei-'iand domestic; sasin the several depaitments of literatu and science; anecdotes respecting the ca: I v. i'i-torv, 'and accounts of the natural curv Vifie, of the western country : and such )ther miscellaneous matter as may tend to the zi . 1 r ; ti ation and amusement of its readers Devoted to no sect or party, it will inculcate .liberal, enlarged and philanthropic fuvvsand while its pages will ever be op.-u to 1. a .olid and well written communic :iio;is 0:1 ap:i opriate subjects from every , all Cwhti ..versv on religious and pol-i'l-t:nc vil be carefully excluded.
Lmv Editor has great &aiifaction in Wir .thU'to add. that, from the number jm4 tl .' faier.t of th"se, who are pledged to con- I
