THE CENTINEL.

The approach of the Election, like the
action of shover9 aud sunshine on other inanimate substances, has re-plumed the withered foliage of the Dearborn Gazette in plainer English, that paper is alive again, and in open hostility to the Governor of Indiana. Its first speech, since its resurrection, is the stale and often refuted tale of the agency of Governor Jennings in the establishment and conduct of the Indiana Centinel, the falsity of which is so well known to every
person in vincennes; where it is well understood that this paper, previous to its late transfer, was the exclusive property of Doctor M'Namee and B J. Ball, uninfluenced by extraneous interference in its management ; that the independent spirit of Doctor M'Namee would brook no dictation ; that as editor he was actuated only by his sense of duty ; that his sense of moral and political duty bound him to oppose the heartless enemies of a worthy man. who has no more pecuniary interest in this establishment than the Cham of Tartarv. The . Dearborn Gazette must not wince at the reflection, that it i9 not believed he penned this idle charge with very clean hands, or that Mr. Dolman will 44 wax faV upon the public bounty, through the meagre exertions of such a raw-honed advocate.
Candidate for OGcei at the next August Election. For Governor. JONATHAN JENNINGS. JESSE L. HOLM AN. For Lieut. Governor. Dennis Pennington, John De Pauw, HatliffBoon, Marston G. Clark.
"We last week copied an extract from a German paper, stating that a number of persons had been detected in a plot to carry olf Alexander, Emperor of all the Russian, and confine him as an hostage for NaToleone Buonaparte. Of the fact of this conspiracy there appears to he no doubt; and it is a fact that elicits our unequivocal admiration. The most impressive spectacle the world kas yet beheld, is the illustrious Exile on the Rock of St. Helena. Reversed at length by treachery and numbers, a prisoner to the legions he had often subdued, enchained by despots who have trembled at his name, the Once mighty Napoleon, always original and great, bends to his fortune with superhuman resignation, which, added to the splendor of his former glory, will perpetuate his Dame for the wonder of future ages. It is unnecessary to advert to his orig;and elevation to the events and means that raided the lowly Corsican to the f.mperor of France, King of Italy, and Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine and it is equally useless to say, with his admirers, that his character displays a compend of the Lest qualities of the greatest heroes and states men who ever eisted ; with the policy and
hardihood ot Philip and Alexander, to the ! stability of Belisarius. the craft ofEpaminondas, and the electric decision of JuliusCesar. ' One trait is peculiarly inestimable through all the vicissitudes of his eventful life, 44 he never forsook a friend, nor forgot a favor ;'9 ; nd, (singular as it is in the history of con. i querors) wherever he planted his "standard as master, he was the author of inestimable good. Forced to continual warfare by the coalitions of bis enemies, be wa alwavs calm in the uproar of battle, and merciful in the moment of victory. Hi hiss of empire, on the eve of certain triumph, his exile to Elba, and return to Fiance, were ; prodigies, to which the history of man, in all its mutations, can produce" no parallel. ( These marvellous events tested the energy j of principle and the strength of personal i attachment. The battle of Waterloo, where j he again lost his crown, proved that lie was i
enthroned in the hearts ol his armv. Amidst the waverings of that tremendous conflict, when The mailed Mars did on his altar sit, Up to the ears in blood his soldiers refused to surrender, for " they knew how to die for their Emperor." - These gallant Frenchmen merited a better fate. They should have lived to defend the " vine-covered hills" from the chilling tread of the Northern plunderers, and the 44 seat of Science" irom the ravages of Vandal dettroyers. lt is but a remnant ol this chivalric devotion, which produced the conspiracy above mentioned. It may be, as the Europeans say,' a phenomenon in the history of man, that the insulated emperor should yet have such desperate, such devoted adherents but, as we live in an age of wonders, we," on that score, cannot doubt the correctness of the 6tory. In modern times a King, (we think, of Poland) was seized in his capital and forced from his guards, by a small number of resolute adventurers; and a nobler band of more daring enthusiast?, pledged to the rescue of the abused Napoleon, may yet retrieve the fallen fortunes of their favorite.
The electioneering contest in Massachusetts, lately ended, has been very animated, and has produced numberless political essays, &c. on both side. Even the Muses have been pressed into the service, and we should hardly regret the violence done to them, if it always produced such lines as the following. The key to their meaning is, that one of the candidates for Lieutenant Governor (Benjamin Austin, Es9') yet wears the old cocked hat of
o,as perseveringly as he adheres to the principles of the Revolutionary day. Intel From the Boston Patriot. I like the old man with the three cornerd Hat; It reminds me of 'Seventy-Five, "When the hearts of our fathers went pat, pit-a-pat, And Liberty scarce was alive. I like the- old man with the three cornerd hat, And the honest old face that he shows under that. It bids me remember the tale I have heard, The thrilling report of old time; When the ship Massachusetts by Hancock was steer d, And a three cornerd hat was no crime. I like the Old Man with the three corncr'd Hat, And the old 'Seventy -Fiver that shows under that. He puts me in mind of a sturdy old oak, That has weatherd the rude pelting blast ;
Tho' a limb, by rude Iightning,J was torn off and bioke, 'The well-rooted trunk yet holds fast. I like the Old Man with the three cornerd hat, And the staunch looking features he shows under that.

She is shortly expected to return to England to answer tile charges of her affectionate spouse, who may probably salute her with the following tender apostrophe :

I like the old trunk, for its scions will prove An honor to Liberty's shore ; The ornament, beauty, and pride of the giove When the storm -iUatter!d oak is no more. I like the Old Man with the three corner'd Hat, "Who was never afraid or asham'd to wear that.
This is a very delicate and feeling allusion. His son, Charles, a slender youth not 18, ivhen about caning Thomas O.
