Rev. Hr. Wevs. This clergyniat, on Sabbath evening last, de-
,ltereu an excellent discourse on the advantageg 1 the Christian religion both to individuals, tcaimuuities and nations. He made several allusions to the West, and tha moral improvements hich were being made there in consequence of tbeefFirts of Christian churches improvements ikirh he himself had witnessed during his late
tL-it there. Amongst other excellences, no said itlosfurawere to be seen at the corners of the !ireets,or on store-boxe, which he thought an improvement on Brookville and other neighboring towns. We should h.-we been glad if he had wggestcd aoaie plan by which our town could be tii of tho nuisance. We have thought consideriklj on the matter, and we had almost concluded that the bsst thing that could be done would be tiepassngo of a town ordinnc9 rcj'iirir.g any tt leafing three days to be put up at auction, ltd bis t ci vices sold to the U"gUett bidder; but a iiS.-uliy suggested it:'f to our mini, and that u, would any one bid cn a loafer? Fire at Hagerstown. The buildings at Ilagerstowo owned by Messrs. Wiggiue, Newcamb and Stonebraker, as pork and grain warehouses, and also as freight and ticket offices for the P., C. & St. L. and W. "W. V. Railroad Companies were destroyed by fire on Thursday of last week. The cause of the Sre ia not definitely known. It was Erst discovered in the east portion of the building in the roof. There Is no insurance. The building contained a considerable quantity of grain, which was all saved, as were also
the books and papers of the companies. Several buildings iu the vicinity were Cred from
the burning brands, but no damage resulted,
there being plenty of water aud willing hands to aid.
Burglary in Butler County. Burglars 6tola three thousand dollars' worth
of five twenty bou-da and ninety dollars in gold from the residence of John Evans, near Venice, Builer County, O, on Thursday niht
Their operations were bunglinjly performed
yet two men, who were sleeping in the room
where the mouey was secreted, failed to wake
up during the performance. It is also notice
able, as a curious feature of the affair, that the thieves took only three ' thousand dollars' worth of bonds when ten thousand dollars' worth besides were concealed in the trunk from which the former amount was taken.
An Illustrated History of the B ble. We are glad to announce that the above named work is being circulated in our midst. It will bo hailed with delight by all lovers of sacred literature and by those who wish to supply their families with interesting and beneficial reading. It presents in a clear and beautiful stylu a continuous history of the events nariated in the Sacred Kecord, describing tha manner, customs and religions that prevailed in the different periods, and narrating the numerous conflicts that marked the progress and decline of nations. Qte of its most important features is its history of the four centuries intervening between the Old and New Testaments, of which comparatively little hi3 been known. A very satisfactory history of this period is here given, one hundred pages being entirely devotsdto it. Among the many hearty com mendations it is eve ry where receiving, we give below one from Prof. Harrison of the Brookville College: I havo been acquainted with Kitto's works ever since their first appoaranee, and have no hesitation in saying that he is unsurpassed as a writer in Biblical literature. And this is but the opinioa of all with whom I have conversed in regard to his works. Hi thvology is soua.l, his statements accurate, and his sty !e lucid aud interesting. I havo examined the present work, and am fully satisfied that it is calculated to do much good in community. I should be glad to see it in every house in Christendom. T. IIahrisox. Mr. Richard Peale is canvassing this County as Agent for the sale of this exeellent book, and we heartily recommend him to our people. New Business House. Another business Louse Las just made its appearance in Brookville, situated on Mrs. Jeter's lot, adjoining Moorinann's watch and jewelry store, to ba occupied by Dr. Armstrong as an oSce.
Lanrel Item?. Quarterly meeting was held in ths M. E. Church of Laurel on Saturday and Sabbath last Rev. Dr. Hester and Prof. John, of Brookville, officiating ministers. Rev. T. B. MeClain has not been able to attend to bis official duties daring the last two week. The railroad election en Saturday resulted 230 for and 15 against takieg stock. S.J. Jones has purchased tho property known as the Humphries property, situated near John Beggs residence. Business seems to be dull, notwithstanding the merchants have a large stock of Fall and Winter goods. On Saturday night the grocery stores of E. C. Caffey and Charles Hubbard were entered by some unknown person, but owing perhaps to the dull times there was not much money in the drawers and consequently but a few dollars taken. A son of Daniel H oak, twelve years of age, was buried on Friday week, the Rev. Dr. Hester preaching the funeral sermon. A daughter of James Henry, formerly of this place, was alsi recently buried here, Rev. A. Sieeth preaching the funeral sermon. Both of these funerals took place in the M . E. Church, and the sermons were preached from texts of the deceased parsons' own selection. Buky & Kerr are paying $1.30 for wheat. . Anox. Obituary. Mrs. Bell A. The Hew Presoyteraa Mm'ster. From what we can learn, our Presbyterian
friends have been fortunate in obtaining an et-
Sclent and promising young man as their pastor,
Ucv. Jlr. Burt. A brother minister who was
present at the services last Sabbath morning in
form s us that he cenducted the exercises most
creditably. The discourse was extempore, and the speaker's theology was sound, his logic fault
less, his language chaste and forcible, and his de
livery impressive and attractive. Moreover, he
manifests a kind aud amiable tlisposition a qual ity, above all othors, essential to success in i
Christian minister. Our informant is acquainted
with his f.ithcr, who, he says, is an eminent phy
sician in Vernon in this State. He also became
acquainted with his uncle, tho Rev. Dr. Burt, the
Oriental traveler, while he was officiating as pas
tor of the Presbyterian Church in Springfield,
and that with good success. Wc hipe the Pres
bvterian Church in this place, and the communi
ty in general, will be largely benefitted by tho
labors of the new minister in our niidsU Married.

Burlington-
Leaving the East and arriving at Chicago or Indianapolis, how shall we reach the West? Th best Line is acknowledged to be th C, B. & Q joined together with the B. & M. Railroad by the Iron Bridge at Burlington, and called the Burlington Route. The main line of the Route running to Omaha, connects with tho great Pacific Roads, and forms to-day the leading route to California. Tho Middle Branch, entering Nebraska at Plattsmoulh, passes through Lincoln, the State Capital, and will this year be finished to 1'ort Kearney, forming the shortest route across the Continent by over 100 miles.
Another branch of the B. M.f diverging at Red
Oak, falls into a line running down the Missouri through St. Joe to Kaasas City, and all Kansas. Passengers by this route to Kaasns, eco Illinois, Southern Iowa, and Missouri, and, by a slight
divergence, can see Nebraska also.
Lovers of fiae views should remember the Bur-
ingtou Rou'.e, for its towns "high-gleaming from
afar" its tree-fringed streams its rough bluff
and quarries its oorn-cceans stretehing over the
prairies further than eye can reach.
Land buyers will be suro to lemember it, for
they have friends among the two thousand who
have already bought farms from Geo. S. Harris,
the Land Commissioner of the B. it M.R. R. at
Burlington, Iowa, or among the four thousand
home-stcadcrs and pre-emptors who last year filed
claims in the Lincoln land office, where "Uncle
Sara is rich enough to give us all a farm."
