Where is one measure proposed different from&t fite Republicans have doni? Notee. All is silence, an-d the Uenioeratic party males an open confeesio-n before the vji:tT4r tiiat its theories and its 5riBciip"tels as "put Forth in the press and its public aots for the last twenty years, -are rotten, absolute failures. Now, let us mee what is the effect of this on all candid sand Intelligent tuinde. If the Deuiocratio "party 'We're to 6ay to us, and to tTne'CO'ttn try, We are a large body of people; b have been long out of power, and we ought to have tww Tarn on the government,' this "wo"bAA to more than a sensible, fair statement, which a candid man would listo to; b-ut ia the case of political parties fftrece arc Vol two alternatives of position Thus, either the sjarty applying for office tiold the Mflae ctinciDVes with those now in peweT, or they must hold different ones. -Now, deea the Democratic party hold the "the a-e pritrei, ples with t-he Kepmblicant? If they really do, the-n the proper course is to -disband, and, as in the time of Mon Toe, tliere will lie an 'era of good feeling,' and they will get their full share of offices. iBut, oslwithstanding the Democratic sddress impfies a tot si dissolution of princifiles, yet the Democratic press, there legisative representatives, profess to have dif Cerent principals. If they have they aro certainly none other than what they have Aeld in the past, and they have utterly Vailed in. Now we ask every candid man if there can be anv stronger evidence of the absolute unfitness of the Democratic party for povteT tlian their total failures on all the principles and ideas they have -asserted and professed in time past. It is Jiiot an irreversible judgment oa their fitness for political power? The whole history f the country for fifteen years has fbeen a history of successive judgments against the Democratic party. Look at it: State sovereign t)? Oa this the war was -made. Slavery, as they said, defended fcy She Constitution! Fur this the war was made. National banks! Thi they overihrew in set up ruinous, dismembered and local batches of State and corporate banks, every step of which denoted commercial -wrecks. Tariff! They wanted free trade -and ended with a horizontal tariff, and 1854 and 1S57 followed 1836 and 1840 The Republicans destroyed State sovereignty in war, abolished slavery; struck it out of the Ootitution by amendments; established negro suffrage; established National Banks and a National currency, and en acted tariff, which now produces two hundred e&illion per annum. The Democratic party . undertook te set up ideas nd principles. They have been knocked on the head with as little mercy as a butcher kills pigs. This has been done hy the American people, who found themselves likely ra be ruined by a party whose ideas were as wild as impracticable, and as ruinous as those of the lied Republicans of Paris. Now, on what one of all of its ideas wt-ll the Domocratio party take issues witi the Republicans? We dare 4b em to nVe an isaue of any one of the "whole series. Shall it be State sovereign ty, slavery, amendment to the Constitution, segro suffrage, national banks, tariffs, Ku-Kluz? Anything you please, gentlemen, which has an idcad in it. fou claim t be a pM ty of principle? What ere they, and where are they? Now is the lime to bring them fotth now or never. Your feeble, miserable, eontemptib'e Democratic address gives the whole ground up. Do yos mean to give it up so? It is true jou meant something? Tell us what you do mean, gentlemen. Somebody whiaia t ir x 'new departure.' Well, if there is anything we tiava a contempt for it ia a 'new depirture.' It means simply one of two things, cither you never ad any principles, or that you mean to desert them now. A young physician was supposed to be "keeping company' with a young lady.
