The President not only reiterates his

that last year seventy-five thousand dollars' worth of dry goods and groceries

By the way, "Bob" has fine taste in selecting prints and dress goods. Long may he wave his yard stick over the piles of goods. Miller &. Tyner are running in a fine assortment. The c-iti-zens of Oxford respondednrompMy at the alarm of fire, and lent all the aid possible in saving furniture, and conveying the young ladies rendered houseless and homeless for the time
being to their houses, where the doo Tvnrp nnin to receive them, and the most

The loss of the building is estimated at

Liverpool and Lceidon ,U"I I The balance is scattered among other companies in small amounts. The walls are left standing as the mere shell of a once noble and beautiful institution f learning, which was considered second to none othr in the West. This;
is the second calamity by fire that has: reached this locality, the building, which formerly occupied the spot, known as the first Western Female Seminary, was completely destroyed by fire eleven years ago on the 14th of January. Both these institutions were built under the supervision and through the extraordinary efforts of the Rev. Daniel Tenney, one of the old est a.d most inlluential Presbyterian ministers of Oxford, but more recently located in Lawrence, Massachusetts. It is not too much to say that the spirit that fosters educational matters for which the Oxford fthe Western comineat is notedthrough
out the length and breadth of the land, will not permit the ruins to eceupy the ground vry long, but will rear a seminary in its stead. FROM THE PRESIDENT OF TUB BOARD To the Kdit -r of the Cincinnati Oaieite: I have this moment re'uroed from Oxford. Uaving learuel from your paper this morning that the Western Female Seminary was burned in the night, I took the 9 A. M. train to Hamilton, and drove a good horse from there to Oxford, arriving. a little after 12. .. The fire originated in tha basement, in the bake room. It. was discovered after midnight, and after tbe halls were filled
with smoke. This made it necessary to cxtenl the alarm with the utmo-it energy and diligenee to save the lives of the inmates. All were saved. Three young U'lies, who were obliged to escape from the second story windows, were burt. one of them rather seriously; but no bones were broken, and all three are reported doing well this afternoon. One of them came on the same train with me to Hamilton. Many of the young ladies escaped with only their night clothing. Probably halt the whole number lost most of their wardrobes. The teachers and pupils behaved with great wisdom and cour.isje. The studunts and officers of Miami University, and ci i xens of Oxford generally, rendered most gallant and efficient service, and'our ladies are experiencing the most generous hospitality. Railroad coiopanies offer them a free passage to their homes, and competent persons are attending to all the arrangements for getting them safely away. A number have left to-day, and probably most of the others will leave to-morrow. Those whose homes are too far away to be reached before the Sabbath, will be hospitably entertaiacd and protected at Oxford The Trustees will meet as soon as possible, and action be taken, such as the emergency demands. The walls are standing and a cursory examination gives hope that they are strong. The friends of the institution mav bo assured that there will be no un
necessary delay in restoring the edifice

At tbe earnest solicitation of President Stanton, the Town Council passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of ale, beer and porter, and suppressing all tippling houses inside of the corporation; citizens
subscribed liberally to a fund to be used in enforcing sail ordinance; the campaign opened vigorously, and was carried on ao effectively that the saloon keepers have

Two of them b'ave abandoned the business altogether, and are now pur suine a more respectable calling; the other eight must draw their income from the wholesale trade.
