Some Plata Hatters. Ma. Editor, I notice that a number of persons have made applications for license to sell intoxicating liquor n the twwa ef Brook fille said applications to p-ed apon at be next session of the Board of County Commissioner. Tbi liquor business seems to me to be all wrong. Fifty person perhaps in this County sell liquor, and they produce more damage to society than all other causes put together, and the Commissioners compel the people to be heavily taxed to supp ess tbe effects of the liquor traffic and support the paupers caused thereby, when they give license for the traffic aforesaid. The law makes it the duty of the County Commissioners to see that the applicants who
receive a license have a good moral character Now what is a good moral character? A man who will sell to a minor or to a person in a state of intoxication, or a man who fits ud apparatus for gambling and suffers it to be carried on in his establishment has such a man the marks of morality? . I think not If he has, it is a vert low grade of morality. I do not recollect of ever hearing of a man being refused a licence in this County on account tf immorality. I do not believe it scarcely possible for a moral man to gs iota the liquor business; but if by accident b should get into it, he will scarcely ever come out moral; or if he does, his morality will be of a low grade. Who are to blame for al this- wrong? in society? I answer, the people. If they would appear before the Commissioners' Court and contest the issuing of licenses to immoral and improper persons, some of the evils of the traffic might be averted. Courts only move as the are acted npon. When the people thus s'and back they should not blame the Commissioners for all of the tU t Ihe liquor traffic. The people should face these demoralizers of society before the Commissioners' Court, and ehow the Court that they are opposed o the truffle, and not let the thing go by default and thus allow the Commissioners to presume that hy are in favor of tbe traffic. Hoofland's (Jerman Bitters, .1 Bitter t without Alcohol or Spirits of any kind, Is different frem all others. It is composed of the pure juices of vtrat. ratsciPLB or Roots, Hikbs, and Basks (or as medicinally termed, extracts), the worthless or inert portions of the ing not being used. Therefore, in one bottle of this Bitters there is contained as much medical virtue as will be found in several gallons of ordinary mixtures. The Knots, Ac, used in this Bitters are grown in Germany, their vital principles ex traded in that country by a scientific Ct.einist and forwarded to the manufactory in this city, where they are compounded ad bottled. Con taining no spirituous inj(raients, this Bitters is free from the objections urged against all others; no desire for stimulants tan be induced from their use; they cannot make drunkards, and cannot, under any circumstances, have any but a beneficial result. Hooflaad's German . Tonic Was compounded for those not incl ined to extreme bitters, aud is intended for ue in cases when sotne alcoholic stimulant is required in connection with the Tonic properties of the Bitters. Each bottle of the Tonie contains one bottle of the Bitters, combined with pure Santa Crcs Run and fUvored in such a manner thit tbe extretn bitterness of the Bitter; is overcome, forming a preparation highly agreeable and pleasant to tbt paUte, and containing tbe medicinal virtues ol the Bitters. The price of the Tonie is $1.50 pet bottle, which many persons think too high. They must take into consideration that tbe stimulant used is guaranteed to be of a pure quality. A poor article could be furnished at a cheaper price, but is it not better to pay a little more and havt a good article? A medicinal preparation should contain none but the best ingredients, and they who expect to obtiin a oheap compound will most certainly be cheated.
