Railroad Massacre One of the most horrible railroad accidents on record occurred at New Hamburg,
leu the Hudson Hirer railroad, the night
rf the 6h. An oil train which bad broken down, was run into by an express train at the New Hamburg bruize. The
- C3 oil ignited and enveloped the etpress train in flawes. The bricgo also gave way, under the accumulated weigbt upon it, and the train went down in a jumbled mass. About thirty lives were lost. Part of the passengers were drowned and many burned
to death. The following particulars with regard to
the terrible accident have been obtained from eye witnesses: " The freight train which caused the eccideut consisted of about twenty-five cars, most of which carried tanks filled with oil. Before leaving Albany, every car was carefully inspected by workmen, and no
defect was discovered. When tha train-i

a signal or a note of warning could be ' raised, tbe express train which bad left the
city at 8 o'clock came rushing along at the rate of thirty miles an hour. The
engine struck the wrecked car with terrible force, setting fire to tbe oil, scattering the j inflammable material and burning frag- i ments in all directions. The force of the
collision instantly threw the engine over j

The Broken Atlantic Cables.
The recent failure of the to British cables leaves both continents at the mercy
of tbe single French submarine telegraph.
and considering that damage to the latter auay occar at any time, it is of the utmost importance to the commercial world that the repairs be made at once. What the trouble h, with the two cables that have ceased working, is difficult to apprehend, but that some undercurrent has moved the rabies upon the edge of a cliff or rocky point, till the coatings are abraded and insulation destroyed, is not improbable. The Bobert Lowe (British ateauier) is at St. John's, Newfoundland, on a grappling and repairing expedition, and it is to bo hoped that we may soon bear that both cables are perfect andcomluunication restored. The survey of the bed of the Atlantic ocean is now so complete, that, in any future cable there will be leys difficulty iu placing portions of
wire rope, beavflr and hetter protected,!
in such parts as 'he difficult places at the b ittom of the sea may make necessary. The damage is known to bave occurred about G5 miles from Heart's Contci.t Newfoundland. The grappling for the cables is simple enough, but the rough weather, Uitial at this time of year, eff Cape Bscs, may delay the completion ol tfe work until Spring.
