Our Public Improvements. Lacrel, Im., Jan'y 25, 1871. Mb. Editor of tob Asiericah, As lama subscriber to jour worthy paper, and have read to or three coinraunicatiocs from our town in regard to the public improvements that hare been erected in our midsi during the rast Summer and Fall, and signed "Two Tax Pavers," and not eeeing any more articles from our town, and as I am one who thinks there has been foul play to tax-payers, I ask for a word or two. Now there has been sometliinj wrong in the building of our Bridge, and there Las been some inquiry made through our County t ai ere, but no explanation given by our County Commissioners. Whtu the first work was let for the embankment for our Kridge, Mr. llubbard told Mr. McGienn that the Commissioners would not pay any more than the contract called for, as they were not going to allow any extras for any trouble the contractors would have in procuring dirt, &c. Hut I see my old worthy fiiend Towhead Williams got the contract at 192 cts per yard, mid as he did not make as much money out of it as he thought he ought to, the Coumy Commissioners allowed him 33 cts. per jaid for a big portion of the bank. Now is this in accordance with what our woilby Commissioner llubbard told a tax-payer? This taxpayer will make aRidavit to what Mr. Hubhard told him, as stated above. Now as we go on, I see the Commissioners have let the protection woik to Schrichte, Rjan i Co , at $1,17 p r yard on private bid. Is that right? No. It ought to have been n lvertised and let to the loweH bidder, as the law says in regard to cenmy work. I also notice an article in regard to the ripran al fin i No one knows to a certainty how
. many stone were put in. And I learn from Mr. llubbard that the price allowed, &c, was left to Mr. John Limpus of F'ayette County, and (I suppose for a reasonable compensation) he set the price at the small sum ol $1,50 per yard. I know of two men who say they will furnish the same kind of stone for one dollar per yard, which is one third less. Hut our Commissioners left this to Limpus, and he made money out of our County, as one of our Commissioners told that Limpus took fl 500 out of our County for work, 4c. Now as I have said some things in regard to what has been done, and no more than was done, 1 ask our Commissioners to come out and explain the transaction, and show to the people of Franklin County that they havn done everything in a business-like aud straightforward manner, and answer all the inquiries that have been made in the papers. I, for cue, want to hear both Bides. Small. Potatok. Good Sleighing:.
Our reonle have taken advantage of the
pood sleighing during the past week, and the merry jingle of the bulls has therefore been incessant. But the thaw on Monday put a quiatus to such enjoyment, much to the dis satisfaction of our young folks especially. The Hamilton Murder. 1:30 P. M. of Thursday of last week was the time set for the calling of the case of Thomas McGehan, who is held to answer the charge of murder in the first degree, as set forth in the indictment reported by the Grand Jury of Butler County. The court-room, long before that hour, was densely crowded by both sexes, who were rr.xious to Bee and bear the trial. It was fnlly 2 o'clock before Hon. Judge Gilmore took his seat. After disposing of several minor cases, that of Thomas McGehan was called, amid breathless silence. The Judge stated that owing to the fact that the attorneys in the case had not fully examined into its merits, and consequently wpre not prepared for a pleading, the matter would be postponed. It would not he known for some time probably on what day the case would be heard.
The Swindlers Caged. We stated last week that the Wo fellows passing by the names of Blair and Patton, who had canvassed this County ostensibly for the eale of a patent metal to cement for covering roofs, had been arrested at Laurel and taken to Rash County. The Rushville Republican says they claimed to represent the "Cincinnati Metallic Cement Company," and took orders for the cement and appointed agents for its sale. Says the Republican: "Among others with whom they had transactions were Mefsrs. William M. McCoy and Henry Beckner. These gentlemen each signed one or more papers which they supposed were orders fof cement or contracts for its agency, but the denouement proved that they were mistakes. A few days ago Blair and Patton made the acquaintance of Mr. JohnS. Wilson, of this place, and offered to trade With him forapair of match ponies and baggy, offering in tbe trade two notes of hand of three hundred dollars each, one executed by William McCoy and the other by Henry Beckner. The notes were payable in hank, and the trade was consummated without suspicion that there was anything wrong about them en the part of Mr. Wilson. Subsequently, however, Mr. Wilson was informed by Messrs. McCoy and Beckner that they had never given such notes, jet still these gentlemen confessed that the signatures were genuine. They admitted that the papers which the cement agents had given to them to sign, bore the same general appearance of the notes which had been produced. Mr. Beckner concluding that he had been duped and would have the note to pay, took it np and gave another one in its stead, while Mr. McCoy seemed inclined to "fight it out." "The ponies traded by Mr. Wilon are well known throughout the country, and on Wednesday of last week he received a telegram from Laurel stating that psrties were offering them for sale there. Finding out that they were the same men to whom he bad traded them, A. B. Campbell Esq. was informed of the fact, and having prepared affidavits, he and Mr. Wilson proceeded to Laurel on the same evening, and arrested the scoundrels. They are now in jail here, having waived the preliminary examination, awaiting their trial at the next term of Circuit Court. ''It is supposed that the parties whose notes are in question, actually signed them. The other papers which they thought they were signing, bear the same general appearance as the notes, and the one was probably dexterously exchanged for the other before the signature was made. There is no doubt that Messrs. McCoy and Beckner neither intended to sign a note nor believed that they were giving one, nnd their signatures were consequently fraudulently obtained. It is an outrage that in such a case thsy should be compelled to pay the notts. Why should not the purchaser of notes be placed in the same position as the man who buys land, who runs the risk of the title being good, and spares no pains in examining it? We gee no reason for the distinction."
Laurel Items. There has been considerable t leighing around here lately, "Moore" so than common. The Laurel Dramatic Association is prospering, and, judging from the interest manifested, will no doubt prove a tuecesa In the event of its "debut" shortly. ..Mr. FrankJBurris is book-keeper in T. The inhabitants of this place were always noted
for their hospitality and civility, but we are sorry to say that they are changing the programme. This is especially noticeable at "the little white hou?e around the corner," The loves of our bridge still remiins in an impassable condition. The I. O. G. T. still holdout here, or at " David's," more apparently, as the paterfamilias of a member was discovered lecturing him severely for his violating tbe pledge, when a by stander remarked that it was" a-par.nt-ly" only. Every lover of a good garden, of vegetables and fruits or the beautiful fragraut fljwers, should send for a Specimen Nunber. Valley House. Mr. Scliaaf, the gentlemanly and a'tentive proprietor of the Vally Douse, is winning
golden opinions as a landlord. His accommodations are of the first order, the tahle at his
hotel being loaded with the best the market a (ford s, and prepared in the right manner. His charges, too, are most reasonable. Success to the Valley House under the new management.
If our friends will use preparations forrcstoring
gray hair they should use the best in the market. Our attention has lately been called to an article which has an extensive sale and a very high reptation, knvwn as Ring's Vegetable Ambrosia,
ana we are inciinea to tnins. that it possesses
more desirable and less objectionable qualities than any other in the market. It restores gray

Hoofland's German Bitters,
A Bitters without Alcohol or Spirits of any hind,
Is different from all others. It is composed of the
purejuioes of Vital principle: or Roots, Herbs, and Babes (or as medicinally termed, extracts), the worthless or inert portions of the ing not being used. Therefore, in one bottle of this
Bitters there is contained as much medical virtue as will be found in several gallons of ordinary mixtures. The Roots, Ac, used in this Bitterc
are grown in Germany, their vital principles ex tracted in that country by a scientific Chemist and forwarded to the manufactory in this city,
where they are compounded and bottled. Con
taining no spirituous ingredients, this Bitters is free from the objections urged against all others; no desire for stimulants ean be induced from their use; they cannot make drunkards, and cat not, under any circumstances, have any but a bene&cial
result. Soofland's German Tonic
Was compounded for those not incl ined to extreme
bitters, and is intended for use in cases' when some alcoholic stimulant is required in connection with the Tonio properties of the Bitters. Each
bottle of the Tonic contains one bottle of the
Bitters, combined with pure Santa Ckuz Rum
and flavored in such a manner that the extreme
bitterness of the Bitters is overcome, forming
preparation highly agreeable and pleasant to the
palate, and containing the medicinal virtues of
the Bitters. The price of the Tonio is $1.50 per bottle, which many persons think too high. They
must take into consideration that the stimulant
used is guaranteed to be of a pure quality. A
poor article eould be furnished at a cheaper prico,
but is it not better to pay a little more and have
a good article? A medicinal preparation should contain none but the bast ingredients, and they who expect to obtiin a cheap compound will most
certainly be cheated.
