Paiticulars of the Gasoline Explosion. Metamora. Ixd , Aug. 14. 1870. Our quiet little village ai the scene of a terrible accident last Tuesday evening, by which four lives were lost and one oher person not expeced to live. Mrs. Vancamp, an estimable old lady, ha kept a drug-store for a number of years in the tillage, and a short time ago bought a barrel of gasoline, fully assured by the seller that it was non-explosive, and with that assurance tbe is now in her prave, the victim of false representa.ions. On
the evening above named, about dusk, bhe discovered her barrel ot gasoline leaking, and requested hereon Charles and a young man by the name of Bennett, who happened to be iti the store, (o go down in the cellar with her and put a new faucet in the barrel. They ligh ed a lamp and went down, two little giandsons of Mrs. Vancamp following them, and after replacing the faucet they all started up the cellar steps leading into the etore-room above, and had made but a step oc two, when the lighted lamp set tire to the gas that bad arisen, which exploded, bursting out the sides and end of the store-room, throwing the jars, bottles, etc , from the shelves, etc , and setting fire to their clothing, burning them so badly before they could be rescued that they are now all deutl except the young man Bennett, and his recovery is very doubtfuk Mrs. Vancamp died last night, the two little boys died yesterday, and Charles Vancamp died last n'ght. Strange as it may appear, not a thing was displaced in ilu cellar ; the barrel of gasoline, together with ev pry thing else, remained just as they left it. The store-room caught fire, but the llaaies wer. soon extinguished. Mr. Chatles Vancamp leaves a wife and three or four children to mourn his untimely death, Mrs. Kimble, the mother of the two little boys, is almost insane with gritf, and no wonder they were such bright little fellows. She was at Indianapolis at the time of the accident, and the boys were staying with their grandmother. "1 heir father is absent in Kansas. The little corpses are packed in ice, awaiting the returu of Mr. Kimble befiire btnial. God pity the bereaved parents and friends of the deceased. A. W. Scli.enuukukr. Mt. Carmel Items. Mr. Editor, Sir: As we see communications from other points of the compass in the columns of jour most worthy sheet, we think it right that the people of the County should know that the poopleof Mt. Carmel yet live and are truly thankful for it. Business appears to be so me whit dull at present in this place, bat all or nearly all look fur better times as soon as crops are disposed of, and the stamps therefrom put into circulation. The work on the new Presbyterian Church is being pushed rapidly forward by the Aehton boys as bricklayists and Gib's boys as woodcarvists. Kninor has it that they will ooinplete it yet this. Fall, and when complete it will most assuredly be a beautiful edifice. We judge there is considerable sickuess in the country near us, ag we see our Drs. driving out considerably. Sam Kane and Albert Gates arc turning out some nice harness, as will be seen by calling on them and taking a squint at their work. Their prices compare favorably with other places. Our town spurts three No. 1 shoe chops, rubhed forward by Andy Firming, Ileory liickard and Sammy Giibreth. Bat Uncle Sam's duties as City -Marshal call hiin away from his wax-bench a greater portion of the time. Ilev. 'lurk is visiting friends in Ohio at present. Mis place in the pulpit was fi led on last Sabbath by Rev. Ktely, who delivered a very pleasant discourse. Would like to hear the Dr. often. Farmers say the ground plows very hard yet, although we have hat some rain in the last few days, but not so much as some of our neighbors. Cora promises a good crop; also a good crop of Colorado bugs, which are at present being buried
for Spring use. Watermelon wagons made a raid on us last week. Finding the supply greater than the demand, they made fun for the boys to the tune of five cent watermolons. Don't think they will bother us any more. Yours, ic, W. B. Mt. Carmel, Aug. 1?, IS70. Resolutions of Condolence Ad ptcd by Magnolia Lodge No. SO, I. O. O. F., of Fai field, Iudiana.Aug. 6th, IsTO.
