Terrib'y Deatractlre Storm. A terribly destructive storm visited Brookville and vicinity last Sunday afternoon, which exceeded anything of the kind that has been witnessed here during many years. Immense numbers of trees were blown down, the growing grain everywhere prostrated, and much fruit destroyed. West of Drookville as far as Sfetamora, and three or four milea Northwest, North, Northeast and East, the same story is to!J of tfte vast destruction of forest trees,
j fruit trees, ornamental trees and shrubbery, very great damage to the growing wheat, corn, oats, Ac, and heavy loss of all kinds of frui knocked off the tieea. Were we to particularise, our columns might almost be filled wi'h descriptions of the terrific scenes that occurred. Being an eye-witness to the damage done the property ho'ders in our town, we can ol course have some idesr of the extent of th destruction elsewhere in the nigbborhood. though we understand the wind and bail were severest Northeast of Brnnkviile, principally in the neighborhood of the East Fork. Wm. MrClure cou-nted twenty-Sve large trees that were blown down in the narrow strip of wood on the face of the bluff adjoining his resi dence, and n the bills) the devastation in the woods warn proportionally greater The wheat is so prostrated and tangled that it will be im possible to save a great portion of it. The ccrn was also flat on the ground, and much of it severely riddled. Vast quantities of fruit were knocked off the trees. The destruction extended as far as Templeton Creek, and West through II. II. Ilpniy'a, Fcekiel Bright's, and as far west as Banes' woods opposite Met amor. Further rrorth there was a heavy general rain, but not much wind and hail. The S'orm clouds appeared to come from two directions Northwest and Northeast meeting each other a short distance above Brookville, and causing a hurricane large trees in many instances being twisted off and thrown in every direction. The damage to trees in Brookville was principally among the locust variety, roost of which in the northern half of town w-re divested of many of their largest branches, literally ob structing the streets with brush. Some valua ble fruit trees were alsr seriously damaged. On Henry Speers' place a b'tge oak of a hun dred enrs was upro-ned, the body of a large locust tree split into halves, a valuable sumach uprooted, and wild plum which stood the center of a narrow circle of trees was twisted off, (curious freak,) the others in the circle being only aiiglitly damaged. On tire Fair Grounds the Treasurer's -hed was turned oer flat on thtj ro: I, and a portion of the fence and one tf the a in phi: heaters prostrated. Wind't'V glass vs;s broken in many residences. The temporary roof on Towusend West's new building was blown u. I he corn, potatoes, and other garden stn'F were Mown almost flat, ! and miie'i fruit was destroyed. The loss to the f:nneis in timber, wheat, corn, f:uit, etc , within an nrc of live titties above Brnokvillt must be almost incalculable. After the Stcrm. Prof. Cowry took a true picture of our main j street covered with rubbish by the storm ofj Sum'jir- wliirh r,if:tirk 14 now nn pk!.ihitinn nl ! bis Gallery. Died in Brookville, "Sunday morning, June 19. h, Islit, Kiixibeth Alone Folmsbce, daughter of Andrew and Lucretia Folinsbee, in the I lib year of her hge. The deceased was a lovely little girl, the joy of the parental household. She was a member of the Sabbath School of the M. H Church, where she was a favorite, greatly beloved by ber teacher and classmates. She was buried at Cedar Grove, after a sermon by the Iter. T. H. Lynch. Her last moments gave evidence that she loved the Savior, who, calling little children to Uim, has said, "of such is the kingdom of hraven." Condition and Prospects of the Crops. The monthly report of the Commissioner of Agriculture (hows that tho average winter wheat erop is nearly five per cent, behind last yair, and the spring sowing has been increased. The avetsge of oats has been increased. Grasses, generally, are flourishimg. Fruits promise aa abun daac. The eottoa average has materially increased in every Slate, and the crop generally is growing well. . ' The Last Joke. Tho latest joke sprung on saloon keepers (ijs the Dubuque Herald) entitles the inventor to a patent right. Two men enter a saloon one is dry, the other wet, or at least not thirsty. One says, "Bill, what will you take!" Bill tajs, "I ain't dry and don't care about anjlhiog." The dry customer then advances to the bar, lays down a tea cent sUioplaster, fills the tumbler fall, drinks half of it, gives the rest to his partner, who by that time has become very thirsty, and smacking bis lips, drains the glass, and both walk away having procured two. horns of whisky for ten cents. Whitcomb Items. H. S. Jaqucs, while picking cherries, fell and iislocatel his wrist and broke one bone of the arm below the elbow. He is doing well ander the care of ifurgcon D. B. Linegar. h. W. Burris, pastor of the M. E. Church at this place, is lying dangerously ill at his residence ia Fairfield. H is disease is dropsy. He has been unable for some time to fill his appointments. R. E. O'Byrne takes his place for the time being. Harvest is apoa us, and the wheat will all be in the ihock by the 4th of July, no preventinj providence. - Brnmblay Nominated for Circuit Prosecutor. At tha Coaventioa held at lawrenoeborgh, last Saturday, the nomination for Cireuit Prosecutor was decided by tha following ballot: Bruuiblay, 33; Moiluilen, 27. A Pafidise on the Prairie. If one w. nti to see what a paradise can be made th.so prairies, oae should visit the residence and giOands of lion. C. F. ClarVsoU , in wo. tern Gruu J. Nothing ia this region of Iowa , s tar as we have seen, can equal the beauty, the luxariane and variety of these grounds. The motl attractive feature are the Evergreens, of waieh Mr. Clarkson has a perfect forest around bis h use. On the west and northwest a quadrapie row of evergreens form a perfect barricade against the cold winis in that quarter. Indeed the evergreens, with the groves of other varieties of torest trees which enwall the mansion on all sides, make so perfect a protection that he inmates scarcely know whea the most scathing net 'welters are blowing. Ia the shelter of this artificial forest Mr. Clarkson hai his orchard aid garden, containing about every variety nf fruit tree and bush and vine and shrubbery and flower that can be made tu grow in this climate. And un lerneath all a luxuiiaat green carpet of velvety Kentucky grass. Mr. Clarkson caat to Grundy some thirteen or
fourteen years ago, and pitched his tent literally i for I he first season he and his family lived in a j van , nj leni upon inv nnKvq prairie ire iiv de.late, then, vi the waring rise of land, now c vered wuh verdant gretn, digniGed by imposing nuiiding and ornamented by tree and shrua and Bower. The results achieved show what time and care and perseverance can accomplish. They Stio kuw comparatively eaey it is to make an earthly paradise upon the prairies of Grundy. vt hen Mr. Clarxsoa came here he labored under foui -told the disadvantages that thine who Mae ow. Let those woo are inclined to grumble at the hardships and drawbacks f a new country, possess their souls in calinuess and psi en:ly await the salvation which industry and catelul management will assuredly and speedily bring. We have been for a leng time urging Mr. Clarkson to write out tor the Atlas a ekeleh of his method o I tree culture, ia wuica he has bean so successful. He says it is the easiest thing in the world to raise trees of all kinds and have them tr-rifty; but others, we imagine, du not find it nearly so easy a he dies, it is very easy to do anything when one knows how ; but many who have met with discouraging failures in raising evergreens have concluded ta it it is very hsrd to learn how. We move that Mr. Clarkson, as an otd resident, give the newer comers to Grundy the benefit of bis experieaoc. Uriudy Co. (,lowa) Alia. Notice of Election of Trustees.
