LOCAL DEPARTJIENT. Circuit Court. Some important civil cases have been disposed of during the past week in Circuit Court The boree case (change of venue from Union County) was decided in favor of Whiteman, he obtaining judgment for about $130. The Batzner bond case (rehearing) was eent to Union County on change of venue. The church case (Go'idie and others vs. Stout and others) went out of Court on demurrer. The piano case (Church vs. Milli?) was dismissed. The case of The State vs. Vawter was continued. The patent right case (Pelton and Barrow vs. Gold) is in progress at present writing. Personal. John D. Haynes Esq., of Dearborn County, visited our town this week, looking after the nomination for Circuit Judge. C. B. Bentley and family are enjoying a visit to Virginia, and will be absent a few weeks. Messrs. Mcintosh of Connersville, Binkley and llolland of Richmond, and Morrow of Indianapolis, were in attendance upon our Circuit Court during the past two weeks. Judge Gooding made his appearance here on Wednesday, looking after the Congressional nomination. College Commencement. The Commencement Exercises of Brookville College will take place June 12-15. Rev. J. Y. Wiley, D. D., Editor Ladies' Repository, preaches the Annual Sermon on June 12th. Uev. II. The New Railroad. We understand that at the meeting of the Railroad Committee in this place on Saturday last, the citizens of Oldenburg were reported as having subscribed $6,000 stock in the proposed new railroal. Good for Oldenburg. If the people residing on other portions of the line will subscribe their Bhare, quickly and without further ceremony, the new railroad will be secured through Franklin County. Let us hear from Oak Forest, Templeton Creek, Colter's Corner, and other neighborhoods.

Circuit Judge. We are informed that our worthy townsman Henry C. Hanna Esq. stands a good chance of receiving the nomination for Circuit Judge at the hands of the Democratic Judicial Convention which is to meet in Harrison cn the 28th Inst. There certainly can be i.o discount on Mr. Hanna' s democracy; if that is to be a test question among the various candidates, he will undoubtedly have the preference. He is the first choice of both Franklin and Union Counties, with Ohio and Dearborn to hear from. Census Appointments. The following Census appointments for Franklin County have been made by General Spooner: R. P. C. Barwick, for the Townships of Brookville, Fair&eld, Bath and Blooming Grove; Daniel S. Shafer, for the Townships of White Water, Springfield, Highland and Butler; Thomas G. Pike, for the Townships of Laurel, Salt Creek, Metamora, Posey and Ray. The taking of the Census is to be commenced June 1st and finished November 1st five months. The pay is two cents per' name, ten cents for each farm, Gfteen cents for each manufacturing establishment, two cents for every deceased person, and ten cents per mile of travel. The Grand Jury Adjourned on Saturday evening, after having reported ninety-five indictments for various offences. Licensed Auctioneers. Attention is directed to the advertisement of Messrs. John II. Fisse A; Co., Licensed Auctioneers, Oldenburg, Indiana. Decoration Cay. The 30ih of May is the day set apart by the Grand Army of the Republic for strewing the graves of soldiers with 3wers. On a very clear evening in the absence of the moon, the Z idiacal Li hl can this month be seen in the West, after the close of the evening twilight. In March it is often very conspicuous. The old saw mill formerly belonging to Orville Gordon, dee'd, is now owned by Melvin Gordon. Iss purchase was a docided bargain. There is some talk of Beggs' distillery discontinuing operations soon, for the purpose of thorough repairing. Alf Biacklide's new building is to be a handsome, convenient and comfortable residence lor two separate families. Mr. li. has set a good example in thus encouraging an increase in the number of enterprising settlers in that thriving town. Capitalists iu our other towns should follow this example. How Do They Live! AYe have heard this questiei atked more than once, by persons who notice that squads of young me n, frt 111 six tee n to twetty-cne and upwards, can be seen walking thi street and hanging about coraers at all hours of the day. Y ith no occupation and few resources, it is a mystery how the idle exist, and how thy obtain food and clothing. There seems 10 be a large class who remain indolent from choice rcther than from necessity setting a rernicious example which recoils upon society. Since idleness is admitted to be the parentof vice, we eannet too earnestly point out to young men the danger ef leading the life of drencs in the industrial beehive. Keeping Eoquets Fresh. If our lady readers wish to keep a boquct fresh, let them drop a tahlespoonful ef powdered charcoal into the water intended for the flower stalks, and they will keep their freshness and perfume for several days, and look and smell the same as those just gatheted. The charcoal settles to the bottom of the vase, the water remaining clear. Take Your Heme Faper. I have often heard people remark that it did net pay them to throw their mor.ej away for papers. The cost of a paper is n o excuse for not taking one. Any one ought to be able to spend five cents a week in that direction. A week does not pass but that five times five cents are spent foolishly, which might have be:n much better invested in a good newspaper. Two dollars and a half a year spent in a paper, buys more reading matter than ten dollars rill in the shape ct bookk; besides that, a man may reaj bopks all his life, but if he fails to read papers, he may be called ignorant. Don't depend upon your own hands and the labor of other men's hands; use steam power if possible, and make it known by printers' ink that you are prepared to do business. Many sedate and staid people assume to believe that riches suddenly asquired are anyth ing but a blessing to the possessors of them; yet who ever heard of any one relaxing an effort in their strenuous exertions to acquire wealth. They know that there is a splendid fortune coming to some one, and we hope the prettiest girl may win the largest prizes. The tickets are selling like hot cakes. The Thespians. The long-Iookcd-for and much-tal ked-of Exhibition came oiT on the evening of April 28th, at the Baptist Church , one mile North of Drewersburg. There were some very admirable features connected with it, and a part of the exercises were very e ntertaining. The opening tableau , j the"Boquet of Liberty," formed by a group of j tastefully dres-e I young girls, each holding in ! her hand a beautiful boquct, was very nice. There were a nuoiber of tableaux, a few comic j songs and scenes, with several entertaining declamations, ic, &e. It is to be hoped that the old Baptist Church will not soon be disgraced by another such scene. J. II. Clol d. Prewcrsburg, Ind., May 5, 1ST0. Petroleum Speculation. Sometime since a gentleman whom we will call Mr. Sites bought a farm from Mr. Fry, at Colter's Corner, on which there is a swac.p, and in this swamp petroleum of the puicst quality was found floating on the water. The oil was collected in a basin by a serv.int girl, and burned with a brilliancy that would make the Cincinnati Ua?lightand Coke Company envious if that corporation was so fortunate as to discover some of it "lying around loose." Mr. Sites bad besn endeavoring to purchase the far.n from Sir. Fry for some time, but tbe latter gentleman winted $22,000 for it , which was considered by Mr. Sites and the neighbors also a rather exorbitant price. The girl who discovered the petroleum imparted the knowledge to Mr. Sites, and, it is rumored, for a calico dress, to no one else until that gen tleman had time to close his bargain with Mr. Fry, and become the possessor of the farm, spontaneous oil well included. Mr. Fry went into business iu Oxford, and is said toie doing very well. Mr. SUe3 has not as yet commenced boring for oil, but he nas made a discovery that may save moved inte the house on his new farm, he fjund ! a collar, and in the cellar a drain leading to the! swamp, and near the drain a barrel which had I contained petroleum, bat the coatents of which had, at that ti:ue, merely "left their tracks" iu j passing from the barrel to the drain. Last Wednesday morning, as the Dirt train was backing pretty fast tnrough town, an old man named John Meyer, who had just left Calloway's Mill with a spring wagon, was driring out to the bridge, when his horse become frightened and began backing. Mr. Meyer tried to turn him away from tho track, when he threw himself back, bringing the wagon wheel against the track. The forward car Struck the hind part of the wagon, smashing it all to atoms and throwing kirn with graa., yiolcnca to the ground. Uis

head struck the end of a cross tie, and had it not been for the brakeman. he would undoubtedly have been killed, as his head was only about six or eight inches from the track. The train was stopped instantly, and he was taken into Chas. Bantly'e, where his wounds were attended to. His head was much cut and one arm somewhat hurt, but nothing serious as far as we could learn. No blame can be laid to the attaches of the road. Harrison Advocate.

The Garden. This department of the farm should receive due attention. Keep the growing crops clean. Early in the month of May sweet corn, bush beans, summer squash, etc, may be planted. By the middle of May, cucumber, musk-melon, watermelon, pumpkin, winter squash and nasturtium may be planted. Some tomatoes may also be transplanted, if protected during cold nights, about the first of June. Lima and other tender pale beans, and ekra, should be planted. Tomatoes, pepper, and egg plants should also be transplanted into the open air. Sweet-potato plants should also be set; the corn should be .planted for succession, and successive pla ntiegs of corn be made every two weeks thereafter until the middle of July. As soon as celery is large enough, it should be pricked out in a rich bed, about four inches apart, where it will make stout plants by the time you are ready to remove them to their trenches or rows, where they are to mature. Watch carefully for cutworms, striped bugs and other noxious insects. The time to hunt them is before the tun. is up. It may seem tedious, but it pays, both in pocket and in health , when you come to enjoy the fruits of yourlabor. This is written for the latitude of Chicago. Now to find the corresponding time for plauting, North and South, add or . subtract one day for every twelve miles of latitude, and the shelter and soil and drainage Icing alike, Jqu will be nearly correct, since the seasons ndracce this distance each day; or in other words, the oscillation of the earth causes the suu apparently to advance just so far north each day, until the extreme point is reached.
