Doa't Forget That the Committee on Stock for the Louisville & Sandusky Railroad are to hold a meeting on Saturday or this week at 2 o'clock P. m. at the office of C. B. B?ntley Esq. Circuit Court Commence J operations on Monday last, with rather a small docket. A Tew cases of violalions of liquor law and gaming law have thus far been tried, and an important civil suit is in progress at the present writing. Pioneer Meeting. A meeting of Old Settlers will be held in BrooJsville on the 4th of July next, which will no doubt be numerously attended. The While Water and Miami Valley Pioneer Association have accepted an invitation to be present. Farticuiars will be published hereafter. Bridge Contracts. The County Commissioners have contracted with Messrs. II. II. Scbrichle, Patrick Ryan and James Wilson to erect and build two piers and two abutments for a bridge across the While Water River at or near Cedar Grove, and also with the same parties to build two piers and two abutments for a bridge across the East Fork of White Water River at or near Laurel, according to the plans and specifications on file at the Auditor's Office. The prices to be paid are as follows: ' $S per perch of 25 cubic feet for masonry below low water mark, on Cedar Grove bridg, anil $7 per perch on Laurel bridge." $T,5l per perch for masonry above low water mark, on Cedar Grove bridge, and $6,50 per perch on Lathrel bridge. $1,13 per cubic yard for pit excavation below low w iter mark, on both bridge. 00 cents per cubic yard for excavation above low water mark, on Cedar Grove bridge, and TO cents per cubic yard on Laurel bridge. White Water Valley. A correspondent of the Indianapolis Journal has recently been making a tour of the White Water Valley, and thus rapturously writes : Below Cotmersvilte we enter the far-famed beautiful Valley of the White Water. Winding around among the green hills, with the river now to the right of us, and now to the left, wa speed along, gating with never-failing delight upon the changing panorama of the outlook. The eye feasts npon the picturesque in almost every possible form, and the heart rejoices in the fruitfulnets and rich promise of the fields stretching away up the hillsides on either hand. It is a valley toll of fat things, whose Inhabitants shall, at

the harvest, "come agaia rejoicing, bringing their j sheaves with them." I Brookville, the nursing mother of distinguished sons of Indiana, is a ctty set npon a hill. It ia beautiful for situation, and we do not wonder, that the children who breathe its pare air, and who look daily upon its lovely surroundings,' should grow up into strong, cultivated and intellectual manhood. It appears that the principal business of this city is to raise men. Kroin Brookville down to the junction of the White Water with the Miami, the valley maintains its Ijeauty and fertility. .r Stewart Paper Company. White, of Hamilton, Ohio, convicted of a-iMii;i connteife'n money, was sentenced this week, by .liide Leavitl in Cincinnati, to one year's imprisonment in the I'eiitteutiary. Ilis sentence was made thus light on account of his hiving a large family dependent npon him for support. The Sun and Saturn. The Sun's spots ate now numerous and interstin;, and can be seen with a smoked glass. The planet Saturn is in a peculiarly fa voiahle position for observation, with the rings at their lu.Lst opening. Business Change. Heuben Fogel has purchased Thos. P. II edrick & Son's stock of goods al Laurel, and has taken possession of the same, together with the old business stand. He is also in receipt of an extensive additional stock of goods jut purchased in the city, and is now ready to serve the public with anything in the line of Ihy Goods, Notions, Groceries, 4c. Success to this voutig gentleman. Recent Decision by the Supreme Court. Jacob F. Kobbins vs. John Cheek lleatur Common Picas Court. AtTiimed. Uaj, J : Suit n a ramissory note for eleven hundred dollars, w ith ten per cent, interest, on which a credit of eleven hundred dollars was indorsed, four mouths and a half after the maturity of the note. The principal ground of defense was based upon the decision in the ease of Couiposot vs. Ewing,S lUackford, 323, wherein it was declared that "If a creditor receive the principal cum due him, he cannot afterward sue for interest." This was so held in an action upon a note "with interest from date." Other authtrities aro cited j in support of this view, which are considered by j the Cort, who says: I Bat whatever the state of authorities at the ! timo that. decision was announced, there cm be i no question now of its unsoundness. Mr. Editor, On the 24th and 25th of March, 1869, a number t f our young ladies and gentlemen gave two Dramatic Eutertainments, the proceeds of which were to go to the fencing in of our Cemetery, and as there were over fifty dollars obtained for that purpose, we are anxious to know why this work has not been done, and what has become of the money. If the party or parties holding this money do not commence operations immediately, or inform us of the cause of the delay, we will be compelled to give a full history of the affair, as it is a matter in which our comtnn nity is very much interested. A word to the wise is sufficient. An Interested Pirtt.. Explanatory. C. H. Bingham Esq., Dkar Sir: The "American" of last week contained a brief notice of the death of Mr. J. V. Adams, with the words "cause unknown" appended. We think the case demands tome further explanation. AVe therefore ask you to give the following a place in your columns: Those persons who were intimately acquainted with the circumstances of the case we presume could have but little diffirtlty in divining the cause of that unfortunate affair. Disease had fastened upon tho vit ils of tho young man; he had been sick for some time; what tho physicians said of his disease, I do not know. It was the r pin ion of outsiders that he had the consumption . I visited him a short time before his death. 1 talk ed to him for some Mine; I did not talk wits him, for he could not talk; it was with difficulty he could Rrticulate so as to be understood. I became satisfied that the machinery about his neck and throat was sadly out of order; that the canker worm lay gnawing atthose organs. He was subject to bad spells, and in those spells he suffered intensely, lie had one of those spells a short time betore he committed tho fatal act. These symptoms would necessarily produce fever. It is in the province of fever to attack the brain, unbalance the mind, and prepare the man for rash and inconsiderate acts. I am satisfied that here may be found the solution of the problem. lie had nothing to die for; all the inducements wire upon the other side to lice. He had but recently married a handsome girl; his will will thnii that, she was tho wife ot his bosom: that there was nothinir wrone there. His venerable! f.ither, his brothers, wealthy and highly respectable, himself above the possibility of want no expense or pains were spared to gratify his every wish. I knew him well. Ho was an amiable young man. All those who knew him will testify that his conduct and bearing was exemplary uui furuily so. Some years back, when he supposed hi cmntry needed his services, he volunteered, entered the army, and served out his term, to tho j credit of himself, 1 presume, and to the satisfae- j tion of all concerned. But the fell destroyer j cams, siir.ed upon his vitals, and in an unguarded j moment he committed an act for which I am sat- j s.-ficd he will not be held accountable. "Oleansins the Blood," upon which charlatans have harped so much much, is not a mere catchword and delusion. The microscope shows that some diseases exist like parasitic growths upon the globules of the blood, and it is further known that some subtle substances destroy or expel them. These substances have been combined to make Ayer's Sarsaparilla, which does effectually expel the disorders that breed and rankle in the blood to rot out as it wete the machinery of life. Meiccr (Ta.) Whig. The Reid-Julian Contest. We desire to do no injustice to a political opponent. Consetjuently, we published a letter from John S. lieid, Ksq , some lime ago, in which he denied certain representations of Mr. Julian in regard to his (Mr. Keid's) lukewarnmess in pressing Lis contest. We left the counter statements to speak for themselves, not presuming to decide whether the one or the other of these gentlemen was correct in his impressions as to the past, but accepting the assurance of Mr. Jieid that lie wished enrly action on the case. As both parties seemed to be agreed on that point, and as Mr. Julian filed his brief in reply to Mr. lleid, with all reasonable promptness on the 13th inst. there was a fair prospect of n Fpeedy decision. Mr. Keid now writes that Mr. Julian, on the 27th inst., "obtained leave of absence for ten days to go to New York for medical treatment,'' and expresses fears that "nothing will be done with the case until his return." Now, this is evidence of impatience to get a decision, most certainly. Mr. Julian's health, it is no se cret, has been seriously affected, aud that is no intimation ot a suspicion even tnai he is seeking to evade early action by thus absenting himself. The Sub Committee which has the case in charge has its hands full, having acted on only one of the five cases on its docket, and the case of Keid vs. Julian stands third on the list. We see no occasion for special complaint on the part of Mr. lleid, for there are numerous other contested cases before other Sjtb.Uominittees, and all can notcome up at once. If we rightly understand Mr. Keid, however, he might as well retire from the field at once. lie says he accepts Mr. Julian's "figures, facts and f t..," that "the question turns on the right of rejecting the South poll at Richmond," and wishes to have it decided at once. It seems to US that this ,..... ... .t. - i nnttee need not delay their report, on such a state ol tilings. iNot only lias the right of throwing out an illegal poll been determined over and over again by the House, under all parties, and from the earliest sessions of Congress, but the duty of thus protecting the ballot-box would teem to be plain where fraud and illegality are clearly made out.
