A new roof has also made its appearance. The southern bank nearthe mouth of the Last Fotk, which tbe high water always washed so tearfully, thus constantly endangering the abutment at that end of the bridge, has been protected by a substantial wail of stone exlending far Ui the river to where a log abu--nieol arrests the deep and swift current. It is estimated that the entire work has cost at least teu thousand dollars. United States Circuit Court. The jury in the case against Jonathan M. The Holidays are over. They were observed in this village in a very quiet manner. A few presents to children, an extra cake, and a more highly seasoned spare-rib than on other occasions, constituted, I think, a majority of Christmas dinners in this place. I see no gathering of the neighbors in answer to previous invitation for turkey doings. Merchants, mechanics and professional men (ministers excepted) have their cards on the bulletin boards calling for settlements with their numerous customers. One thing is worthy of remark: il takes less j whiskey to go past the Holidays here than in some villages not far otf. In some places men think the Uiith of the Savior should be observed by them in getting what they call "gloriously drunk"; the old year should take its leave and the new one make its appearance to find them in the same "unglorious" condition. At half rast 7 o'clock on Friday evening a Cre broke out in the Union Non-explosive Light manufactory, corner of Fourth and Ludlow streets, Hamilton, Ohio, andinstantly the whole building was a mass of flames. A considerable I amount of coal oil being stored ia the building, 1 the prospect, for a time, was ominous. After a j barrel of oil had burst, the firemen su cceeded in rolling the thrco barrels remaining into the street and the flames shot up as high as the house tops. They gradually burned themselves out, and after that the fire was soon subdued. Various rumors are afloat as to theorigin of the fire, among which it is impossible to select the true. An ex plosion was heard by the residents of the next to the door the house, and before they could run
flames were bursting out of the windaw. Frank's New Store Building. Mr. Wm. Frank has recently occupied the capacious store-room in his new brick building, having removed and arranged a fine lot of furniture therein. He can boaetof having one of the handsomest business rooms in Eastern Indiana. His massive show windows and iron front with heavy cornice when finished will be something entirely new in-Brookville, and the entire building will speak in no doubtful banner concerning the steady improvement of our town.
Found Dead. Rear Symmes' Corner, Butler County, on Tuesday week, Phoebe Maickle, subject to epileptic fits, was left alone in the house by her father, who went out to hiul wood, and when he returned at noon-he found her lying dead on her face by the fire-place, her clothing entirely consumed, and her arms, feet, breast, and other parts of her body burned to a erisp. It is supposed that while preparing dinner she had been seised with a fit, and had fallen into the open fire. The Congressional Matter. The Brookville American complains that the Kichmond Radical has been "writins against it" for urging the claims of J udge Wilson for Congress. Well, it mat ters very little what the Richmond Radical says in regard to that matter, so far as its influence is concerned; bat its editor, occupying the relation he does of brother to our present member of Congress, not only shows a lack of modesty by the manner in which he advocates Mr. Julian's claims, but by his dictatorial course and his unlimited abuse ot ait wuo iaii to see tne ooiicy of retaining that gentleman in Con gress, does more to injure htm than bis most influential and bitter opponents. Like the American we supported Mr. Julian at the last nomination, and are well satisfied that he has made as faithful and ethcient a Representative as could have been found in the District, but that he is not the most available candidate we have had abundant proof. Our majority in the District is not lar-re enigh to permit us to disregard the availability of our caudidate, and if we can find a man qualified for the position, who 'has not been identified with the anti-Julian imbroglo one who did not give his aid to Reid when Julian became the nominee of the party it seems to U3 that the only hope of success is to make such an one our standard-bearer. Jurist Wilson has been spoken of in this connection in several quarters, and should he receive tbe nomination, we can give him a hearty support; but we would much prefer to see this eminent Jude remain on the bench. Besides, Rush county may present claims for consideration, in which case we shall propose a candidate every way worthy of support, and use cur best efforts to secure his nomination. In making these remarks we cherish none but the kinkest feelings for Mr. Julian. Probably in his present precarious state of health he does not desire a renomination. Rut whatever may be the result, or whatever course Mr. Julian may take, we want to see our party go into the fight harmonious and united. The nomination should be made fdirlc and honestlv. an-J , ieach iiepubhean should deter-aine to sap1 . . , i - v . ... . ! port tne nominee, wnerner ne to uis ia voritc or cot.
