For the American. Visit to Laurel. WntTK Water Vallkt, Oct. 24, '69. Mk. Editor, I visited Laurel last Friday,

and could not but notice the improved appear ance of the town, in the way of repairing and painting the old dilapidated houses, fences, Jfcc, graveling the streets paving the sidewalks, Ac. Another noticeable feature was the number of farmers from the surrounding country, with their wives and daughters, pur chasing goods, of which there is any amount in the stores. The Messrs. Oeyer have just received and opened a large and well selected Btock, which they propose to sell on reasonable terms. But of all the mammoth stocks of goods kept in a country store, W. F. Haz ard'a "caps the climax." Any and every thing, from a needie to the largest sized cooking stove, can be had there, at prices, too, that defy competition, I was surprised wheu he took me through his extensive establishment and told me the prices of many -of his poods. I could but ask him how he could afford to sell them at such low rates. His reply was: ''I want to live and let live; when I buy goods I buy them in large quantities; consequently I get them cheaper than if bought in small large stock of goods at reduced prices. There . is another reason," he continued, "why my customers have the advautage: if I sell say twenty thousand dollars' worth of goods at a profit of two thousand dollars, is It not better for the buyer than if I only sold ten thousand dollars' worth and made the same ptofit ?" I saw through it all very plainly, and came to the conclusion, from the crowd of customers at his counters, they had already learned that there was the place to exchange their "greenbax" for goods. Yours, ic, Nomad. Obituary. John Stoops was the sou of David and Abigail S;oops, and was born in the State of Kentucky, ntar the mouth of the Little Kentucky itiver, ou the 3d day of May, 1802. Soon after his fanily removed to the White Water Vailey in 1S03, and for one season .stopped near Johnsou's Fork. Two years afier this they came to Brookviila, and with the excep tion of two years' residence in A'tiitan.a, he resided in this Valley. In 1S22 he married F-Jiih, daughter of the late S'.vphen Martin, and about thirty-two years ago they settled mar Connersville, whtre he departed this lite ou last Fiiday morning, aged 67 years, 5 months and 1 'J das. The deceased had been a member and communicant uf the Baptist Church fjr aSout uinett en years. His remains were interred in the Village Creek Cemetery ou Sunday latt. Mr. John Stools was weil known by all of our older settlers. U., Oct. 22, tG'J. Mr. ISditor, You have often heard of the "tooth of Time," but it has been discovered that Time hs no tooth. It is circi.mstancc that has done all the gnawing chartred to Time. So I find on visiting Brookville each year that Time has not devoured the blessed old 'town, neither added much to its metes, and bounds nor to it habitations. The rirtumstance ' tf' the railroad going there hss had a marked eilcct on the town; perhaps not so tnani- j fest to the dwellers at home as to those ! who are there trans-ieutly. That effect is a good one. The business of the town has improved. "Buildings that are built since t lie n are better, generally, than those built before, and there is a commercial air prevailing thcteabouts that is somewhat unusual. iaie visit or over tnree weeks. A County Fair is, in a measure, an exponent ot a County's prosperity, but this is not to be taken without allowance.' If it is, the late rait does not speak as well for the prosperity of our County as those oi ten years ago. mere was not eo good a show of horses or cattle or agricultural machinery, or of sheep, or of vegetables as we naa ten or twelve years ago. The show of the ladies' handiwork in sewin as well as tn preserves, jellies. &c was as gooa as formerly. This is no fault of the management. That was never better. The fault lies at the door of the County Commissioners How is that, when they have not a thin to do with the Fair? We will see! Ten and. twelve years ago the roads leading from Springfield, White Water and Bath Townships were crowded with fetock and people going to the Fair. This year I saw nearly no Btock at the Fair from either of these Townships, and the attendance of the people from these Townships was small. Indeed, it is my opinion, that more people from East of Big Cedar went to the Hamilton Fair than came to Brookville. The trade and produce of this best part of the County goes to Oxford and Hamilton and Harrison. .No act of our Commissioners for the past fifteen years has been inteuded to prevent this. Appropriations for bridges have been made lot the benefit of almost ever? other part of the County, and nothing for this. The East Fork has been left unbridged, and net only that, tui Itie Tortls in such a condition that farmers cannot get to town with a load of wheat. They used to market their wheat aud corn there, but they canuot cow. They pay their taxes, and the Commissioners expend the money elsewhere and otherwise, aud the faruiers have looked for trade where they can get with a load. Thus losing thtir place of trade, the people of the East have lost all iutcrest in T)rookvitle aud also in the County Fair. It may be too late now to regain this loss. But I do not think so. With the unsurpased water privileges of Brookville! with its railroad and other advantages, if the spitit uf enterprise is encouraged, all produce should bring as high a price in Brookville as iu Hamilton or Oxford. Goods could be sold as low, and therefore commerce between the Uwu and county should be active. If the County Commissioners designed to injure the countryseat, I cannot conceive of any more effectual way than they have taken by driv ing all the trade of the Towns-hips named away, atni thus divorcing ; tleui from t ur town. They have had no evil design in this, but the wcrk'has been well accom pH.-hed. Will they see the. mistake and correct it as speedily as possible? When Brookville has the trade cf that Extern part of the County, the cobweb will be knocked out of her warehouses, and the sound t f prosperity be heart in her stree. 9, and then also there will be a better -show at oar Fairs. ; l.est I jirow toolon, (I mean tvy piece.) 1 wiii repervo a lew more n tlcctions on what I 5-nw at the Fair and not next week.
