The local press of out country does not receive the amount of encouragement ami patronage that it is titled to, And has a right te eipet. It receives tbe "cut direct" in wej multitudinous and Inexcusable. Many persons imbibe the foolish idea that upon their precious backs must be placed no article of apparel, unless purchased originally in Paris, London, i'lurem-e, or some other foreign market. Jatttomsnj deceive themselves wi'h the idea that w hat reading matter goes into their families must come from some distant city or town; when frequently, in this case, as ia tha former, a better or equally good article can be bad,.ia the home market, and at mors reasonable partes. N dtae element, perhaps, ia any community tends S3 strongly to tbe development of the resources, aad building up of the material interests of that community , as a wide-awake, properly conducted Local Press. By candid, comprehensive minds, this fact is appreciated and made available. It is not necessary to go to men possessing such minds, and solicit their patronage. it comes unsougm, ana as a matter ot course; and they think tar less of the fsvor they confer upon the printer than nf the benefit they are themselves to derive front such a bestowal of their patronage. Men ot easrgy aad intelligence, it is their determination to know what is trans, piringta their aeighborheed; this knowledge they obtaia frota the Local Tress. Men ot buiaos, having dry goods, groceries, hardware, machinery,

Everywhere, the world over, tha success of mea of busiaess is proportionate to the mesne they employ ia making thei? business known. Sheibyville Union. Fall Schools for Farmers Boys. We always have liked, and always shall like, the old-fashioned plan of working . on a farm during the summer, going to school in autumn, and then teaching in the winter. It was the beginning of a career, wnlcb, in the instance of miuy a disingui bed man now living or dead, has ended in greatness. It seems to follow the natural order tbe development of muscle, then mind, then the appropriate use of both. Taking New England together, and we may include most, if not all of the Middle States and some portions of the great West, there is not a given circumference of say twenty . miles, but within it there sre boys aad girls grown to the verge of man or womanhood sufficient to form a respebtable-sised school, w hich, if located in the centre, would be within three or four mites of the remotest scholar. And what is better, in each of these several areas, some one may almost always be found with sufficient brain and culture and leisure who can be induced to act as teacher. AI most all farmers can spare their boys, say eight Weeks from the first of September, five days ia the week, especially if bearding at borne, they lend ahand occasionally in the morning and at Bight. Suppose that a thousand of these schools could be started within tha next two woeks, gathering the lads and lasses of the: townships or sections together for generous trial in tbe realm of brain; and what is, perhaps, next in importance, a general knocking off of the rough corners by social contact; what a fund of information would be gathered, and how many of both sexes would date the beginning of a higher intellectual life from these home-mad reminaries of home-made leaning. Cltearth and Ilome. What is a Democrat? Democracy is the most wonderful phenomenon ot the day. The stuffed' Hippopotamus which irrupted into our city lately amid a flourish of trumpets and with a sounding challenge to "Match Htui!" is but a small wonder, when compared with this "time honored'' parly. To understand it thoroughly, and comprehend all its length, breadth and thick nes, requires an intellect which but few mortals possess. Even the astute Nasby failed most signally in his attempts to expound its doctrines, whenever heh'snged liia geographical situation, and, whs returned to tbe Confedrit X Roads in political disgrace. When the Democratic party is now spoken of, it mut be with some sort of qualification as to the State to winch allusion is made. . i in .Massachusetts J Democracy is to pay every dollar of the national debt in gord. lot Ohio it is to practically, repudiate it; by a flood of irredeemable greenbacks. In Pennsylvania it is for a high protective tariff. In Indiana it ia lor free trade. In New York it is for the national bank system. In the .West it is., for' a sudden sweeping of the institution from the face of rtje'eatth. "We hnve got along 'with these little idiosyncrasies moderately well, but now cotues one that is completely stunning. Indiana Democracy has always been tbe fiercest and most relentless war upon the uigger. . The Emancipation Proclamation, negro suffrage in the South and the Fifteenth Amendment, have been tbe objective points agaiast which the most terrific anathemas have been hurled. Take away the nigger from lloosier Democracy, and what is left of it? Kliminafe" the nigger from the staple speeches of such prophets as llchdricts and Voorhees, atid what ''sounding brass and tinkling cymbals" their fiery declamation becomes? And yet the Wisconsin ' Democracy has parsed a resolution in their State Convention, declaring that they are" rejoiced at the emancipation bf the negro, the extension of suffrage to the colored men ot the South, and are favor of the adoption of the Constitutional Amendment! And as if this was not enough, the Missouri AVnftVi, the of the red hottest sort of De mocracy, speaks oF these iscousin traitors in thcee terms: i "Tbe platform of the Wisconsin Democracy is a documeut worthy of the party. It is not only a plain, intelligible and uucqivocattng profession oT true Detnocrstio principles, but is also practical and to tbe point in tegard to every question of Federal and State interest of which it treats. It is not unnecessarily prolix, in its expressions, but is concise and objectie throughout. It docs not uselessly dig up old grievances, but takes things in their present shape, and frankly agrees to or condemns tbeni.M " '' AngeU and Ministers of (Democratic) Grace defend us!" John Qitincv Adams, Uen. llosecrar.s, and now the Hadger State! What is a Democrat? .Journal. "' Arrest of Two Robbers, and Recovery of Stolen Properly. , j Cincinnati, September 19. Itlchard Clark and Henry Uose were arrested yesterday on suspicion of robbing the porc .house of liriggs & Swift, Mondayevening, of a large amount of bonds. On searching their lodgings 550,000 in bonds and a large amount of jewelry and silverware was found. Clark and Hose, while engaced in this business, worked daily in tbe factory, and it was a mere accident that thoy were detected. Many of the articles found in their hiding place have been identified as the fruit of foberie committed. Dills receivable to the amount of about one hundred thousand dollars were also recovered. The Memphis Put, in an admirable article on "What is Republicanism?" says: "The old Democratic party, first demoralised and now dead, held its ascendancy ia the popular mind from a sort J of belief among the mssjes cf the people that the great idea of freedom and equality lay underneath it. ...Tha name Democracy was deat to then because they hoped that 1 the name indicated the real presence of the principle which it described, and their affection lingered long around it when there was left only a putrifying carcass and a stench. The Republican party came into being from the , uceestites of the hour to lead back both the Whig and Democratic parlies to the true principles of our covernmeat. The definition cf itepublicanism is now simple and easy. It means freedom for all men and perfect equality usder the law that is, equal rights tor all. It does not raise the question of likeness or equality of men or races. It simply settles their legal rights, and leaves those other questions toethnolo. gy and society." Ueut. Gov. Cumback, of tins city, has received a very urkent invitation from the Republican Central Cotumitte of Ohio, te go to that Ttate and make a few speeches. The Governor having a heavy law practice'

Td the Editor 6 the I ndianapolit Journal: The impression has prevailed that Lay Delegation is to be ratified by Conferences as Constitutional amendments are by States. This is a mistake. ' The Conferences are mere voting precincts, and the question is decided by the result of the aggregate vote. The Indiana Conference voted a boat two to one for Lay Delegation. Nearly all those voting against it being tbe old men, who would naturally oppose any change. Remember that the Confer, ence is two to one in favor of accepting ihe expressed wish of the people. A Clean Victory. ' St. Louis, September 17. 1 A dispatch from Denver says further election returns confirm yesterday's report of the Republican majority. Where the Democrats made a party nomination, they have generally been deteated. The Legislature will have a clear Republican ma jority. . The Coroner's jury at .
