Deponent Sayeth. Depositions were taken before Charles Moor-
mann. Notary Public, on Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday of this week, in the contested was small-pox. The remains were brought to election case of Reid vs. Julian. Two witness- his father's, three miles below Brookville, on es were examined from each Precinct in the Friday, where he was buried by the Odd FelTownships of Springfield, White Water, Salt j lows. Mr. Wiley was about twenty-four years
Creek, Highland, Ray and Metamora, and also several from the two Precincts in BrookTille Township. Thos. B. Adams appeared for G. W. Julian, and Henry Hanna for Judge Reid. The testimony shows very great irregularity in the voting last October in each of these Frecincta, there being no boundary lines established, and voters casting their ballots at either Precinct in their respective Townships. The County Commissioners sometime ago abolished the lines dividing these Frecincis, for some reason best known to themselves; but whether fraud was intended in doing so, does not yet clearly appear. The testimony will most probably result in throwing out the entire Congressional vote in every one of those seven Townships, thereby decreasing Reid 8 -majority in Franklin County fully 1,000 votes Depositions were taken in Wayne County last week by Judge Reid. L. D. Stubbs acted as attorney for Mr. Julian. The substance of the testimony has not yet transpired. Medical Meeting. Thomas Stant died on Monday, 18th inst., at his residence one mile west of Blooming Grove, aged about eighty-three years. Mr. Slant had been a resident of Franklin County nearly fifty years. He accumulated a great amount of property, and was the fa;her of a la-ge family. Samuel McCleery died at Metamora, Jan'y 13;h, 1869, of consumption, aged 42 years. He leaves a wife and two children. His remains were interred at Venice, Ohio. Springfield Township Items. Springfield, Jan. ISih, 1869. Mr. Editor, I will for the first time endeavor to pen a few lines for your paper, hopiDg you will give them a cordial wel come. I presume that some of the readers of the American will be very glad to hear from this portion ot the County once more. We are prospering very well, considering the disadvantages that we labor under such weather as we have at present. We need a pike on every road, for they are ilniost impassable. We had the pike fever very badly eomc time aco, but it has all abated." It has become constitutional now. Go ahead, men of wealth, and improve your portion of the County. Do not live in the mud all your lives. Build a turnpike from Brookville to Oxford; then jou can have a good road on which to haul the productions of your farms to market. Our wheat crops look promising. If we do ntt have too i.ard a winter, thi crop will be excellent this year. I will co as far as to say we never had as good prospects cf croP8 of wheat before in my recollection, orn croP8 were pood last year with us. 1 he WeDt rom t0 e,ShtJfive busheS8 tn tbe acre. The farmers in this section of the County are improving their land in one way; that is, by ditching or draining their farms. They use tile principally for ditchiincr. I5ut as lor improving their roads they are very slow indeed. I think we have about the best land there is in the ! County and the worst roads. Do not allow this, men of wealth. Let us put our shoulders to the woik, and build a road that will be of some benefit to the neighborhood. It will increase the value of our land and the looks of our country, put j money in the treasury and hands to work ! on tne road, and we will have it comple- j ted in a very short time We have a splendid country store in this !ittle village, owned by A. From the Sew York Post, January 14. The Great States Given Away. The Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette has doue a good service to the people by bringing together in a letter, which we publish in full to-day, the details of the grants made by Congress to railroad companies, out of the public lands. It appears that nearly one-third of all the lands of the nation have been already given away to great corporations; and that .peculators, encouraged by their success hitherto, are now before Congress with plausible schemes for getting nearly all that remains. The companies created and enriched by these grants will hereafter wield a pecuni. ary and political power greater than the hugest monopolies hitherto known have ventured to aspire to. The Union and Central Pacific roads alone, which are practically one, will control a financial interest of nominally 100 OUO.OUO, apart from the incalculable value of the lauds, 1 24.U0O.OUU acres, which they receive as a gift. Even at this time the value at current prices of the franchises aud property secured to these companies can not be es
timated at less thau 00.(.'O0,0Ut; all of ? . i . - 11. i . it obtained by the projectors without the investment of a dollar of their own, except in lobbying. The power they will have over the politics of the States which will be formed upon their line can not be less than absolute; and it will be a power without any cot responding responsibility, and therefore without any. ptoper check. Their financial power is already f tit throughout the couutry, and is growing with alarming rapidity. Each ?f the other great railroads which have received land grants is an incipient monopoly ou the same colossal scale. .Not less than ten srreat States, each of them larger than New York, each of theai sore to contain, within a century, not less thati live millions ot people, have been gien over to the control of these irresponsible ! ' monopolies. A direct grant to a body ol ! adve rule i fashi adventurers ot the rilit to own, settle and j a certain country torevcr, after the hioo of the great monarch of the age of discovery, would not be, iu reality, a I more tcckicss vioianon oi tuc principles ' of free government. i Is it time to stop this lavish uistribu- I j "on of empires? Is it time to hesitate iu this stupendous munificence, bv which the very traditions told by Herodotus of the kinfjdotus given to favorites bv "the Great Ivinti" of the Easi are surpassed? Is it time to have some regard to the purity and freedom of the government undei which our children are to live? If so, the first step is to rt iect utterly and at once every one of the plundering schemes now before Congress. Alter this is doue we maJ think of retracing our steps, aud niti; lo icmcuj some oi ine eus lor which the way is already prepared.
