Frightful and Fatal Occurrence. The Methodist Sabbath School of Mt. Carmel want on a fishing excursion last Saturday morning, being conveyed in spring wagons about a dosen in number. While descending the long hill juts East of Brookville, one of the horses attachEd to the foremost wagon took fright from some cause, and ran over a big stump, capsizing the wagon, which contained about a dozen little boys, and causing It to overturn twice on its fearful course down the ravine. Four of the boys were seriously Injured-1 wo of the Widow reel's sons and two of th Widow Lackey' sons, all of Mt. Carmel. They were immediately conveyed to the house of Mr. John Jones, on the bill adjoining, physicians were called, and everything done that was possible to relieve the sufferings of the unfortunate little fellows; but one of them (Widow Peek's youngest boy about six years old) died in less than two hours after the frightful occurrence. The other three an fortunate were thought to L not dangerously injured. Of course the party returned without going further on the excursion. F. & A. M. There will be a called meeting of Harmony Lodge No. 11, Tuesday evening, June 16th. Work in the M. degree. By order of the Master, W. H. Jones, Sec'y. Geyer's Ice Cream Saloon. The Ice Cream Saloon of Thos. S. Geyer, at Laurel, is one of the institutions of that thriving town. His rooms have been newly fitted up for the accommodation of ladies and gentlemen, who get what they want there in the shape of ice cream, cool lemonade and soda. Hornadaj'a Strawberriei. We recently enjoyed a visit to Mr. Ja. It. Hornaday'a exietiuve strawberry patch near New Trenton. He ha about thirty, different varieties of the choicest and largest kind. Iking very careful iu picking them and hipping them in good order,-bis berries are worth more than the ordinary kind obtained from the city, and be readily sells all that he produces. We advise those wanting the best variety ct strawberries to senJ their order to Mr. HornaJay, who will furnish them in any quantity promptly per railroad. . Laurel Item. The Exhibition given by the jonnj ladies and gentlemen of our towu, at Giflord' Hall, last week, was a perfect success. Two evening! were occupied in the regular performance, and th Hall each evening was tilled to overflowing. Tbe audience was very agreeably disappointed, a the well decorated stage and showy coaiume gave evidence of a degree of taste tbat I hey had not anticipated. All the parts were well sustained, and some of the tableaux were splendid, especially "Dying on the Old Camp Ground," exhibited the Itut night. Hope wt may aooa have another entertainment of th same kind. Our 1'resbyteriaM friends havn secured the services of Rev. Mr. l'urker, Taster of the
Second rreLjterian Church in Connersville, to preach for them every other Sabbath at 3 o'clock iu the afternoon. Mr. Parker is an able and earnest minister of the Gospel, and through hit well directed efforts tho Society has beeu reorganized and promise to run well. A Sabbath School bus also been organized 10 meet at 9 o'clock every Sunday morning. And for the bei lit of this iinpottant auxiliary to the Church, th ladies are going to hare a strawberry festival on Thursday evening of this week. The ladies at tne head of this affair know bow to provide "good things" for a festival, and 110 doubt this will be a very pleas- ! ant occasion to all who attend. Fur tbe American. Gossip. . That idle and ompfy intercourre which goes under the natuo of Gossip, force itself upon our attention. Uonp is tbe talk of people who hayo more grap of ear than braio. It is conversation not produced, but merely reproduced. The person who gossips take in ideas and gires them forth uucbaoged, save in their direction. Somewhat like "Webhcr'a Mill" swallows water coming in one lino of motion, and whirls out the same water in. another. Goftttip is the farthest thing po?siblo from a legitimate intellectual procest. There is no more thought in it than thcro is in blowing a'sound oat of a dinner horn. It ia thought carried on in spite of thinking. How tcry cheap is gossip! It involves no tudious tiling of the attention, no vigorous cxen-Ue of the reason, no careful determining bv moans of the judgment. Who ever gossips that is capubte ot holding thought auv better than ehe can hold a flea? Gossiping need, a mind. enough not to grsp au idea and turn it over and over again, but timply to turn it in a no direction. What of imagination does it require? Merely enough to complete a sceno when ouie rumor of it is heard, or to make out a notorious affair from some shabby f urniise. What of memory does it demand? Merely enough to keep the last batch of street news fresh for a fluent bsLLling when the first ood occasion presents itr-olf. How much of conscience is there in it? Jut enough to allow persons to do unto others a they would not at all have others to do unto them. It is through Go.xniping that people often lose frieuda and gain eneuiiea ioatcad, whother deserving tlictu or not. How muny there are in our ''American Society" who are given to that looso and vain kind of conversation or which I have been tpcuking. It ii the delight of eome tobe forever running down others. It mutters not who (hey are. Perhaps a once fond sister or daughter, who is striving hard, day alter day, to create enthusiasm for study in some quiet village school; or it may .bo a kind father, or a brother who baa gone to fight the battles of war and save the very ones who are spending their
time in tossip. Need I say tbat you never saw a person with a strong mental or moral constitution indulging iu this species of autouiaic conversation? How much, readers, we are prone to believe evil of any one, rather than good. We nod our heads and say, (when anything is uttered to our neighbor's disadvantage,) "I always thought so; it has turned out just as I expected; I knew that he or she was no better than they should be." Why is this? Why is our charity so Btnall and our love of tho disparagement of other so regneot over every other good principle? Is it not beoaudo we have foiled to impress upon the tablets of our hearts the golden rule "Do unto others as ye would that they should do unto you"? Milroy, Kush Co., Ind. Lizzie. Petroleum V. Nasby relates that "Darrstt's VeKtabl llslr Restorative" hss th effect to so renew the youth or his blovei wife that "she rsn uffwith a Yankee peddler" this Is probullj not the only Instance where "ßnrrett's" bss proved a captivating wenpon in the hands of many a lady whose personal charms hare been wonderfully brought oat by the use of this excellent preparation.
