Illinois Correspondence. Lincoln, III , April 29th, 1SC3. Ed. American, Sow that the great Congressional agony in your District is orer, it may be agreeable to hear from these regions. Unless something ia done to fill up the columns of the American, to the exclusion of the silly and sickening Harrison quarrel, you may a well engage the services of an undertaker at once. Hut lest I call down upon my devoted head the lightnings of somebody'e wrath, I will Dot pursue this topio further. Like unto your Congressional excitoment, we have one here. Mr. Cuilom, the present M. C, has voted right for two terms, but has made too much money say 8 100,000 out of 83,000 per veer. The "whisky ring" could tell eotne tales, it may be, and any ofiicer who favors those whisky frauds is a thief and a zuirer. Cuilom still is anxious to sacrifice and suffer for the sake or the party. General Smith, a good eoldier, but poor politician, it also willing to endure privation for the sako of writiog "M. C." after his name, lie ia a feeble Republican, a half-and-half Johnson man. These are the leading. candidates for tho nomination, and either would lo badly beaten at the poll; for tome men here, like some men in your District, have had no more eento than to injure tho roan, as far as possible, before the nomination. If either one shall bo nominated, lomo men will have to bolt the ticket,, or eat a very large quantity of dirt. In either case, enough has been laid by our friends to ruin our chances, unlesa a new man ia nominated. The Convention will be held next week. There ia some talk of nominating for Governor a man who loves his 'tea," liko Dick Yates. Such a course will givo Illinois to the Democracy, for a hundred thousand Methodist voters, backed by the Good Templars and Tetnplo of Honor, have decided that hereafter tobrr men shall be our rulera. Hitherto it has been taken for granted that tho aforesaid voters were loyal, and would rote the ticket, morals or no morala. That day hat pasted, and decent people must bo consulted as well aa those who disregard morality and religion. At Bloomlogtoo, week before last, thia question waa tested. Tho temperate, moral voters asked that a sober and upright ticket be put in tho field by tho llepublicans, as, of course, the Democrats were expected to run drunkard makers on their ticket. The Republicans taid, "no, we will nominate our ticket and you will sup. port it." Tho result wis grand and right, and for the first time in years Demooraoy rules tn Bloomington. Amen! io let it be everywhere, until politicians lesrn that some people have rights and opinions aa well as others. If we have not good men in our party, let the party dlo and be de cently buried. Horace Greeley recently said that no party can afford to do wrong,
and We are beginning to feel that truth fearfully. Hut a truce to politics. We have had fine sporting here thia Spring, as ducks, trout, geenc and cranes have been superabundant. I went a few days ego to see some old Drookville people the Lindsleys and I think I saw around one tittle pond something less, than ten thousand geese, crane, trout and ducks. The fields are now covered with plover, and the little creeks abound with snipe, and in au hour we can usually get a mess witüin- a mile of the parsonage. Cat-fiih. pike and perch abound in tit It Creek, two milci away, and white fish and spotted trout abound in the grocery stores at 12 cents per lb. I csn do much better catching the last named. If you. Mr. Editor, will
make us a visit, I will show you how to hoot birda on the tcinjn, for if you break me wing you are nearly eure or your game. Some fellows hero are vulgar enoagh to shoot at birds while they are flying, but it seems cruel to stop the poor thing when they aro trying to get away. don't Jo it. Weddings abound here, and I have made fifty persona happy in the last rix months. I intended to tell you of many other equally important things, but this letter ia alroady too long. I regret to hear lhat so many of your good citisona are leaving Hrookville. It would be fir better for the place if aome of tbem would May, and let others go who care more for the dimes than for tho progress, social or material, of the town. Yours truly, W. R. Goodwin. We again seo it stated that Lafe Develin will be an aspirant lor the Democratic nomination for Congress. We have heard the same tiling of Col. Biokle, but we reckon it mutt bo slander, as we believe the Colonel has for some time been understood to be acting with the Republican party. Uichmond Truo Republican.
