THE PATENT zizimmmm soetb MANUFACTORY AND WAREROOMS 187 and 1S9 BOMCrj, (above Delanc,) NEW YOllK. MANNER & OOi Having sscurod letters patent on their vstdable improvements on Pianos and added largely to tkelrprevlonsly oiteuslve facilities lor uianufaeturing, are now prepared to furnish t the Trade, or at retail, their GRAND SQUARE AND UPRIGHT PATENT Ah ION HAKO FORTES i Which they offer with all tbe usual gnaranteei.in
eompetitlon with the Steinway, Cbickering, or any ether nrst-elass piano, believing as they do that the Arion is superior to any other. Read below the Article from the Brooklyn Dai ly Times. Mr. Abbott, Orginist of the Charon of Our Sav iour, says of tbe Ariou: Messrs. Manner A Co.t Uentlemen: I hare critically examined and seveial times played upon one of your Arion Piano Fortes, and it affords me much pleasare to add my testimony In favor of your superior instruments. For elasticity of touch, for the singing qua Uy, so much sought for by artists, and for richness and purity of tone it Is unexcelled by any piano I have overused. J. M. ABBOT, Organist er the Chursa of the Saviour ol Brooklyn, N. Y. Prof. John Tf. Henry Canoll, editor of tbe American Educational Monthly, says: "Listen, however, to one of another class, for example, ooe ef tbe Arion Pianos made by Manner A Co. Bow yonr bead as tbe bass sends forth its riches, clear and onblurred; observe the singing, swelling melody that in its middle octaves so wondreusly represents vocal exprts&ion, and which predominates above crta the tllvcry brilliancy of the upper treble, 1 hen rtflect that this is a scientUuaily constructed durable instrument, and if you hare at homo an ordinary, fourth-rate Piano, whose beauty ef tone bad vsri.hed sooUcr than the lustre of its varnish, ehlds not your child for lack of expression, nor wonder when your wife is playing that she seems t have no soul. The instrument as well as the performer must have power of expression i a piano, it may aim oft be said, as well as a singer, must hare a soul." From "The Brooklyn Dally 'fitue:'' "TTe will say that the Arion Piano forte is a very elegant instrument of the largest class and Very highly finished. Musically, it bns a full, dctp.rich tone, Sbd the fnett powerful tbat we have ever listened to. Itbas in a higher degree than any piano that we harn met wilb, tbe singing quality or character, that musicians so much admire ail seek. for in a piano. TL bass-notes reniiuding you of the deep toned notes' bf S large organ. Tbe Middle Octaves are more clastio and clear than in most other pianos, owing to peculiar arrangements that we shall speak of hereafter, while the upper or treble notei possess tbat pure, distinct, bell-like clearness, that is so necessary to tbe ebrreCt rendering of diEicuIt pieces of Music, and that also' lends such a Charm to melody. The Arion Scale is from A to C, so ns te meet all the requirements of modern music', Which a seven octave piano will not do. 'To obtain powef yon must have strength;, A7e have attained this in tho peculiarity of the franie before alluded to, and in the use of a bar in the direction aud on a line with the heavy steel stringing under the 'over-strung las.' This bar passing beneath the stringing sind running diagonally from the front right-haud corner, to tho back left-hand corner of the ease, gives strength where most needed and where most other pianos fail; in fact it might not inaptly be termed tho spine or back bone of the piano. "Tbey stsnd in lure lci?fr than other piano, to effect which we are again enabled by tllo peculiar shape of our iron frame, to use short pin so that the piano is strung close to the wrcst-plack; thus almost doing away with a leverage strain on the tuning pin, which in lout pianos, is at icsst three-quarters of an inch'above the j in, Cjuiing the pin to loosen, and often bringing it in contact with the iron plate. The construction of tbe wrest-plank has also a great advantage over.thoto of other pianos, in being f rmed of four sections of hard wood, laid horizontally snd firmly glued end fastened, the grain of each section crossing the" grain of the one next to it in a different line or direction. So that the tuning-pins have tbe pressure of the end wood ag-iinfct them in every direction, makiftg it impossible fer the pin to loosen itself as it docs where it h.is a pressure agatDst the sides of the grain, as it has in all otherpianos. This, loo, prevents the splitting of the wrest plank. "Tbe construction of the case and tho combination of the iron frame therewith, we also claim as being nsw and improved. The left liwer end t f the frame, being imbedded orcctln the solid wood, or we believe (to use a technical term) butted against tho wrcrt-plank, at a point and on aline just inside of the Hoc cf tbe tuning-pins, by which means firtt, great additional strength is gaired, second, the frame being so sunk iu the v'i-ü, allows the stringing (as before described) to bo close to tbe wreSt-plank; ahÜ third, the gr. at desideratum, so long sought for by tbe trade, a full iroa frame without a pofibi!:ty of tbe tucirg pins cowing in contact with it, is gained. Our agraffe arrangement ia aptl6r great improvemmt effectej tn a ?itu;!5 but superior :nanucf. A hollow bar, cast with the frame and opening on the underside and extendirg along the line of the tun in g-pins, has fitted iu t't it a reversed wooden brii'e, in which the bridge pins are inserted. This referred bri'Jg, benig a trifle lower than the wrest-plank, gives an npward as also a aide-bearing to tbe strings, and by this admiiable arrangement an ografl'e is obtained tbat gives a firm posiiiou te the strings that no blow from tbe baaimcr can displace. A similar plan on an iron bed. ling has beeu before attempted, bat alaays '.a connection with the complicated uedcrdampers, whic'a lavaria'jly bic jxo dip!a:cü and out of otder. "In the Arion Piano we use the French damper, universally acknowledged as the ben, actnj from their own weight alone. Thy aro Crmly hinged, andean more neither to tho right nor to the left, tastncly in tho direction required. Thus it will bo' sMO. that our ariffo arrangement is complete, not only in itself b'tt in all iia connection with other parte of the action. With other agraffes now in use, there are several difficulties that can not be remedied. First, the wire stiihgs run through an ej e in the top if a screw, Or pin, and tiittst lit the eye exactly; or it will create an unpleasant, bnzring sound. The same difficulty is apt to occur when, from constant using, tho strain upon the string lessens in its size, or the constant vibration on the inside of the eye wears the eye larger. The screw or pin, too. for the' same reason (constant vibration on it) will at times become looe and cauae an unpleasant jarring to the chord'. N ono of these disadvantages can happen to tbe Arion agraffe. " We have above given Mr. Manner's rlcims for tho superiority of the Arion Piano Fortes and bis objections to other piano?, in nearly his own wtrds, and ho was very ready to tako us throughout tbe factory and explain all tho different departments of it to us. Wo bad a fulr chance of judging of its merits, and I link the cla!ms of tbe Arion are well tatea. i is at jcoi cue ci ixc very best pianos b;fjre the publl.v--Prooklj n Daily Times. All of our Pianos will bo finished with the new self-acting prop stick f r holding up the top of tbe Piano.
