LETTER FftOM LAUREL. Corriipondana of tha Amadeas. Laurel, Ind., Dec. 24, 18C6V JJome again I But there has been such a chauge ia the appearance of things during the short space of two months, that I ean hardly realize it as my old home. To hear and see the old iron horse puffing and rolling aloog every hour or two, makes me feel as though I wss in some other locality. I left Shelbyv-lle last Thursday at 12 o'clock M., and was at Metamora by 7 o' clock P. M., after waiting two and a half hours at Valley Junction. Pretty quick work; thanks to the President of the I. & O. and W. V. V. R. R. May he live a thousand years, and his shadow never grow less. The world can illy spare men of such indomitable energy and perseverance. He has erected for himself a monument more enduring than the solid marble shaft can ever be, in digging down the hills, leveling hollows, spanning rivers, binding together towns and cities with Iron bands that can' never be broken while civilized men are permitted to rule tho nations of the earth. - I eeo but one Ymgle drawback to keep II. C. Lord's name from becoming immortalized in the history of his eountry, and that is, he is such an uncompromising Democrat. I understand he will not em ploy any operatives on his roads but those of ti e same persuasion. Well. I will freely forgive him for that, if ho will continue by bis energy and capital to annihilate time and space for the purposes of trade and travel. N Though 1 have but little of either to do, I love to see it for tho benefit of those that have. And now, Mr. Editor, whatever you do don't lot Mr. Lord see this letter, for fear he should make mo an exception to the general rulo by appointing me to some lucrative office on some of his roads, or giving me a perpetual dead-head ticket, viz: to lay my bead on the track and let tho carl run over It, and have my funeral preached by some reverend old Democrat who would as leave tako his text from Dillworth's old spelling book as fro tu the Bible, not knowing tho difference I usod to know ono of that kind when 1 was a boy. I shall not soon forget the kindness of Mr. Avery, the gentlemanly Conductor on the train from tho Junction to Laurel. Your, JLo.t A. W. St'I.LENDUROER. LETTER FROM DECATUR CO., IND. CvrrponJuct of the Atatrlcan. Editor of American, It has been some time tinco I wrote anything for your columns, but I presumo my remissness In this particular has not been a very great disappointment to your numerous readers. Tho holidays aro near at hand. Their approach used to be heralded by debtors 'forking over the needful' lo their creditors; and by this means ulon?, without consult Irg the almanac, muoy wcro advised of their annual approuch ; but such is not tho case nowadaya to an extent that will relieve the anxiety of thoso who aro iu great need of means to meet pressing engagements. There is a cause for this delay or back wardnees, but whether a just one or not, is a debatable quet-tion. 1 1) the first place, persons who went into tho hog trade last iall got their views up entirely too high, started in on $10 per cwt., and are unwilling to go out at a little over half that figure, and the result is that most if not quite all tho hogs which have been driven iiom this vicinity were packed and held by the drover, awaiting an advance, but the advanco recently is like tho tuilitia captain's order to his company, "Advance backward,'' and whether their present views will be realised, time alono will determine. Of one tiling, however, they are pretty well assured already tho old cry of ''abort crop" was only a phantom of the brain. Thcro wcro a great many ho's fattened in. this vicinityenough, 1 presume, if marketed, to placo this community in an cay financial condition. Dumqcm has been very dull hero for the past few months. We have occasionally, as a kind of prelude to the monotony, a regular fluro-up between tho votaries of Bacchus, which never results In anything more seiicus than a bluck eye or bloody none. Cyrus Kilgore Esq., long snd favorably known to the citizens of Franklin County, has charge of tho School hore, nsa'utod by his daughter. Their services are. commended and duly appreciated by 'the patrons of tho School. Mr. Povrnor and lady, our former worly Touchers, have charga of .i . . i i . . .:i i.... i. i, . wie ocnooi at .uuruj, imxii vouruy. In a former comnl union tion I referred to a number of Franklin County men here, and inadvertently omitted our worthy-Post Master, Old Uncle Tommy Anderson. About the time the fuuiou.i and inßwntiil Johnson Club of Grcensburg wai In the fall tide of its glory, its pom rous Hcorotary interrogated llio old man n refcronco to his indorsement of "my olicy.'W lie didn't indorse much. Homo iow or other the Club's contemplated work of demolition of t!o Governmont officials of this County has not prospered much. Sampson must havo been '-shorn of his locks." Col. Gavin, the last convert In this region, has been more fortcnato than those who inaugurated the "Johnson movement" in this Couuty. Tho only thing in the Colonel's way at prosent to prevent him entering on the discharge of the very profitable and no doubt (to lira) pler-sont duty of District Collector,' is a little aetion on the part of tho Sonata in the way cf confirmation. This appointment shows plainer than any other act of Mr. Johneon's life that he is thankful for a very tmall favor. It ia trne the Colonel went all the way to Philadelphia, and no doubt mingled his tears with those who wept at the "affektin spektakle" of the arm-in-arm march of South Carolina and Msüsachusetts. Shortly alter his return ne started out on a mission to proclaim and defend his new faith, but unfortunately for his peaco and quiet ne eniirea into a joint discussion with Col. Cullen at Milroy, and got so completely demolished that be Utterly refused to meet any one else in joint discussion during the canvas. He being the last convert in this County, goes to show very conclusively that bia influence is not very potent. I wa gTeaiiy in oopes ioai your appeal
to friends in different localities of the County to furnish local items for your paper would meet with a hearty response, as nothing could add more to the interest of its columns. . I must close ere I weary the patience of your numerous readers. Milford, Dec. 24, 1SCS. Cliftt.
