An ArluaiM "Hoaiii." In a recant tour through eat of the wildcat and moat aparatly asttied region ol'Arknniia.th land mada dassio by the effuaiona of that versatile geniu. "Peter Whettone,") I arrived at the Ferry on Cache River. A little log-houae grocery stood on the near bank, about fifteen atepe from where the Ma lay, tted to a anag in the edge of the water. --Several bear-akins, deor-akina, and cuon-akina, were nailed up to dry againat walls of the grocery, but the door wa closed, and no bar-keeper, ferry man. or other person, waa in aight. I hallooed at the top of my voice tome hall a dozen timea but no one anewered. Seeing an advertisement on the door, I read aa folio wa: "No at Ef enny boddy cum hear arter licker, or too gtt Akroaa the River They kin geat bio This here iiorne and ef i dont euro when my wife Betsey up at the Hous herea ttie iiorne a blotn shele cum down and aell the licker or aet em Akross the river ime guine a Fiahin no oredet a when ime awa from Hoeme John wilaon NB. them that cant rede will hev too go too the houae arter Betsey taint bat a halt mi e thar." In obedience to the "noatia," I took the blowing-horn, which atuck in a crack of the wall close by the door, and gave it a " toot' or two, which reverberated far a round through the cane and iwamp. and in a few momenta was answered by a voice scarce ly leaa loud and reverberating than that of the horn it aeeroed to be about half a mile up the river: in about fifteen minutea a stalwart female made her ap oearnnee, and asked if 1 wanted licker." No, Madam, 1 want to cross the river, if you please. "Don't ye want some licker fust?" No, Madam don't drink never touch liquor." "Never UUk licker! Why, then ye must be a preacher, aint ye?" No, Madam, I'm only a Son of Temperance; I wiah to get acroaa the river, if you pleaae; do you row the boat?" Oh, yes! I can take ye over in leas than no time. Fetch up yer boas!" I obeyed, asking, as I led the horse into the boat "Did your husband write that advertisement on the door there?" No, eir-rw! Schoolmaster Jones writ that. John hain't got no larnin'!" And the good woman rowed the boat aafcly acroaa the ugly atresia, and handing her the ferriage-fee, I bade her good morning, believing then, as 1 atill do, that she waa one of the happiest women, and best wives, I ever saw perfectly contented with her lot, because she knew uo Lti. Many persona aeem to regard moral and legal suasion as directly opposite to each other, when in fact they agree and harmonixe exactly. A man cannot be found who advocatea the prohibition of the liquor traffic, who is not a strong friend ol moral suasion. He pleads with the drunkard and moderate drinker to dee from the wrath to come by abandoning their cups. He ahowa to the dealer in poiaona the immorality and wiokedneae of his trade, and preaente every possible motive which an honest man could require to quit his accursed busineaa. He exhorts the people everywhere to come up to the "help of the Lord against the mighty," and crush out the last vestige of the evil. If moral auaaion fails to turn the rumaeller from the error of hia waya, the aame weapon is employ ed with the masses to induce them to demand a ceaaation of hostilities. There is, we know, a class of peaudo temperance men who contend that the only remedy for the evils of the tratiic and use of liquor la an appeal to the bearta and consciences of men. 1 his class is looked upon with favor by the whole army of rumsellera, for these fear nothing but law. There is not a aingle reason for resorting to appeals to the conectence of a liquor seller, and there leave the subject, that will not apply with equal force to Ike thief, highwayman or any other desperado. It is right and proper that the immorality and criminality of stealing should be enforced in every
nursery, school and eherch, and It is also necessary that there should be a law to punish those who will steal in defiance of nil moral appliancea. So far from our being opposed to moral suasion, we have never hoped for success from any other source. We never attempted to frame an argument against the traffic, or made an appeal to the drunkard maker, upon any other platform. We advocate the law before the people as moral auaaionists. The only redemption for the world is to be wrought out by moral suasion. The great object of law la not reformation but protection. We do not inquire primarily whether law will convert and reform, bot the quastion it, will society by protected be it? We would not coerce men to be moral, but we would compel them to respect the rights or others. Newark Weekly Time.
Programme of a Drunkard's Pro grass BT fKTEB TH8 HBBhflT. riasT oaoasa. Hs possesses a particular partiality for persona of profligate proclivities, and prefers passing hia precious time in playing poker, parading public promenades and puffing principe, producing and promulgating pieces of poetry, prominent in any property hut pity, and proclaiming with an imperfect pronunciation, and with a prodigious pitch of pulmonary power, auch popular passages, as " I won't go horns till morning, Till daylight doth appear." COND DKOSXX. He now proceeds with a rapid pace, down the plain approaching the precipice of perdition. Hirt patrimony has passed into the pockets of penurioua penny-mongers, the proprietors of places, painted up and prepared on purpose, where poison is peddled by puppies, whose profession is to pop porter corks, pander to perverse appetites, prevent peace and plenty, prohibit prosperity and pure pleasure, provoke passion and pilfering, push persona into the penitentiary, and to produce the very greateat portion of poverty and penury possible. His apparel is patched in a plenty of places, and his probiscua ia as purple as prunes in their prime. His peepers present a plutonic prospect. He spends every penny he can procure for poison to pour down his prostituted throat, to provoke hia prostrated apparatus to proceed, while perhaps a partner and her progeny are dependent upon him for protection, and provisions to prevent them from perishing. While upon hia peregrinationa and pedestrian expeditions from pillar to post, (viz: from groceree to groceri.) he can't possibly preserve the perpendicular poaition peculiar to bipeda, and has to prop up ajtainst posts, to prevent his protration on the pavement. He ia now perfectly prepared to proceed with the iaat part of hia peculiar programme. THIRD D KORKE. In the preceding part of bis progress, we perceive that he has parted with purity, peace, pride, politeness, property, plenty, pros perity, placidity, precaution, a proper respect for his person, the prerogatives of a parental position, the practice of prompt payment, principles of piety, and all pleasant prospects ; and prooured in their place, profligacy pinching poverty, public opprobrium, pros cription, private piquea, petulence, pity from persons of pure principles, pangs of pain, a plentiful portion of plagues, and a premo nition ot approaching the preci pice, and pitching into the pit of perdition He is now pursued by phantoms that present a peculiar prospect to his perturbed powers of perception. He proceeds from place to place thev pursue him ; ne aeeka protection in plenteous portions of prepared poison they persecute him with more pertinac ity and perseverance; he is point ed at by people as a person po eased, and passes to a private apartment, to prevent the practice of their prying propensities, and lor protection Irom hi perst'cutinff phantoms they are plentifully present; he proceeds to put into operation the practice of physical power upon Ins persecutors thev approach his person in Dlatoons. and positively laugh at opposition. He procures the professional pow er ot an experienced practitioner to procure a stampede ol the phantoms ; the prudent Paracelsua proceeda to pay particular respect to the patients pulse, and pronounoea him posessed of a powerful fever, peculiar to mania-a-potu, and prescribe plentiful portions of morphene, with a parcel of powder of poison, and a pretty little pile of pills, to be procured at the apoth ecary, and puts out with a presentiment that his patient will presently proceed on hia passage "To that bourns, From whonco no trartllor returns." He pants with pain, and n pro fu ne perspiration appears at every pore. His power is perfectly prostrated, his pulse has paused, ne puts up a piteous appeal to the Prince of Peace, anu pasaea away forever. May Clod . have mercy on all auch. PoBTsctirr. We might have prolonged the present piece, had we been positive the printer had a plenty of Ps. Crusader. doing "Down Town." Here ia some good advice, pleasantly administered by the Georgia Temperance Crusader In every village, however small, there ia some particular portion distinctively called " Town," and
which, with Its appellative "up" or "down," becomes a place of the most decided notoriety. At most places this "town" is a grogshop; at some merely a store; and at others perhaps only a postoffice. There, all the idlera in the community practiae the frequent assembling of themselves, with an intuitive feeling which proves the truth of the well 'mown adage, " Birds of a feather will Hock together." As these have nothing to demand their special attention, they very kindly undertake to attend to the affairs of
every one else. Nothing, f rom the gravest queatlon of State polities, to the minutest piece of village acandal, ia excluded from the legitimate Held of their cognizance. If it be a grocery, it poaaeaaea the attraction of a most pleasing variety. The unexpressible beautiea of a street tight or dirty brawl occasionally relieve the monotony which would perhaps characterize a more sober assembly. The inexperienced may think the sights more dismal, the ounda more awful than thoae which Christian saw and heard in the valley of the shadow of Death. But they soon present him their charms, and their terror pass away. Then he can hasten thither with the rising sun and remain until its Occident, without having his conscience rebuked or his pa tience annoyed. There the young are initiated into the courts of vice, oaths begin to hang upon their lips, and the ingredient of the polaoned chalice are administered to their lips. These miser able ruin-ihops, which serve as a place of rendezvous for degraded loafers, become sinks of iniquity, disgraceful to the country, and a curse upon any community. It is for thia reason that the hackneyed phrase, " Let's go down town," has an ominous import, which blanches the wife'e cheek, and sends a thrill of fear through the hearts of her children. It ia the money and time spent there which haa reduced her to poverty, eatranged the heart of her husband, and blighted hia hopes of success. Ah! that place "down town," has ruined many a man for time and forever. Habits of dissipation have there been contracted which clung like festering sores to his soul through a lifetime of misery. Young man, go not there. Leave not the quiet aeclusion of your room, to enjoy the low ribaldry and obacene jeata of a motley crowd. Avoid the haunts where vice and idleness reign, as the mariner would ahun a destructive maelstrom, when a precious freight is entrusted to his care. Summon a courage to reaist every fascination which the scene may present; hold on the even tenor of your way, whatever revelry and mirth may invite your attendance. With many, this going " down town" ia a downward movement, indeed; a moving from weath to indigence, from honor to disgrace, from exaltation to debasement. The time spent there ia not an unproductive investment. It seldom fails in bringing forth an abundant crop of misery, shame and crime, wnich tell upon the soul's eternal welfare. Young Ladies Should Learn to Oook Now, girls, don't all start aghast at the above caption, for, soriously, we believe that every American girl should be duly and thoroughly initiated into all the arts and mysteries of the kitchen ; In fait, should understand all the tnitiutia, from las compounding of sweet -incuts und pastry, to boiling a potato, Not only do wa isy she ought to know this, but her future happinoss greatly depends on hsr being in possession Sf sach knowledge, lor however much her lover may admire her lily white hands that glide so gently, and touch so magically the harp strings whose music wraps and enchants his soul yet the romance of courtshiu is tupplanted by the stern necessities and realities of every day life. Dopend upon it, girls, that lover husband will be very apt to prefer a well -cooked dinner to white hands, especially if you have moderate means, and wishing to be economical, do not keeps domostic. But more than all should you understand this brunch of domestic economy, as a protection against the impositions ot Bridget or sally. Wo are also old togyish enough in our notions to believe that no woman possessed of good health, loses anything in respectibility or in happiness, by preparing the meal for bur own family. And thanks to our modern cooking stoves, with their nicely arranged skillets, sauce-pans and (toilers, which have been substi tuted for the roasting, blazing fire on the kitchen hearth, iu days of yoro, now the wife msy prepare all the delicacies herself, and preside at the table with white and uusoiled hands, and S clear, blooming complexion. But while we could wish to see girls instructed in tho various occupations and duties of every day life we do not wish to seo them become household drudges ; but the usoful should be combined with the ornamental, so that when they come to assume the duties of wives and mothers, the inmates of home rnuy lie charmed by its pleasantness, and her magic tonus throw such allureinouts around homo as will stay the wandering feet, and keep the gem of virtue bright and pure by tho fireside. Some, perhaps, may think our notions of female education and em ployment, rather antiquated ; but if wo had no other reason to plead Tor them than habits of industry, we should still say that labor of somu ort or other, ie a demand of our nature ; and if fortune has placed them in a position that frees them of household duties, still it is necensry that they should understand how it ie done, that they may give directions to domestics ; and, as mental and physical exercise should be com1. 1 ued. it ts well to cook a meal once in a while, just lor the fun of it, und for the take of the exerciss.
