WHAT OF THE OSAGE ORANGE? In r poo to inquiries, we prorulsed iu our June number to give special attention to thin plant during our Western travels. W 0 Lave done 0, and tiler aeeing the plant in almost .very suge oi growth, in n variety of 53L?52aJ5Ti ' T T 1! tat, and iHer con2Cnf EE iT i lata to being more unsettled than erar ita regard to the general adaptability of the Osage Orange Ibr hedging, in short, ire have not jet that faith in it which would lead us to be at the ezpenae of planting out five hundred rods of it. in any place or under any 'I'l?1 VT ; I 7 other reaort whatever for fencinir. where there We expect this statement will call forth strong protests, for we have vis ited a few localities where the plant now promises to succeed, and we doubt not it will sometime be successful, but we certainly speak within due limits, when we say that so far the failures have far exceeded the cases of success. It would greatly exceed our limits to note particularly the several examinations we have made, and we can only speak in general terms. Out of 47 hedges we examined, 23 were badly injured by frost, oither last winter or the winter before , 7 wero considerably injured, and 4 slightly so. Of the 13 apparently uninjured. 7 were sheltered by hillsides, groves, or by snow banks produced by adjacent fences We heard of several others uninjured, but did net see them We met but throe person.- whu had tried them, and who were not interested in the sale of plants or to sustain a reputation for past statements, who were ready to give them their present hearty endorsement. A gentleman in the Great Miami Valley, (Western Ohio,) showed us a very good hedge on the east side of a hill and sheltered by it. He seemed to have confidence in the plant, and stated that a number of farmers in the vicinity were putting out new plots. Another, in Western New York, has a young hedge which has escaped freezing, and he is confident that the plant will flourish there. Another, in Central Illinois, has a hedge now three years old from the setting which though a little nipped by frost isxcmi iog out new shoots, and the owner is ho confident of success that ho is preparing to plant out two miles. A large land-holder, near Knoxritle. 111., informed us that he intended to plant several milos. but since the results of last winter's frosts have been developed, be has given up all idea of trying tins hedge plant, and he is now looking around for a sub stitute. An intelligent farmer in Kendall ounty, 111., who has been watching this plant since its first introduction, and who has made long journeys of observation to settle the question for himself, said to us : "I have come to the conclusion that the Osage Orange will answer Ibr a hedge, so long aa you have a good rail fence on one side and a board fence on the other.'' Others, in Ohio, Indiana ami Illinois, expressed similar opinions. Many think there is no doubt but a good hedge may be produced with the Osage Orange if if is carefully attended to for a fete years. But here is one great difficulty. The experiment oi planting a hundred miles along the Illinois Central Railroad, heralded so loudly some two years since, was commenced, but is given up entirely, we believe, and the portion planted is proving a failure. 'for want of care,' it is said We have thus expressed our present opinion of this plant, with a very few of the practical reasons therefor. Jnst such a hedging plant as the Osage Orange has boen represented to be, is greatly seeded ; and so great is the want that we will still cling to the hope that in many localities it will flourish. The almost constant care required will in any case be an objection, but not a fatal one we trust, over millions of acres almost or quite devoid of fencing material. We shall be glad to hear from our readers ot this topic. We want facts, however not opinions, unless such opinions are exceedingly well fortified by facts. Let us endeavor to ascertain under precisely what circumstances of soil, latitude, climate, exposure or protection, the Osage Orange trill grow, or rather tuts grown to suffiejflBt height and thickness to form a salb and reliable hedge. Let us know what expense, including outlays of time as well aa money, is required to bring the hedge to a useful condition, aad also how much enre i nnnnally needed thereafter In tho meantime. WDUe wc . unnot t present dvige any one to enter latfely into the ue of thit plant, -wo think it desirable thut experiments should be continued Unit' a dozen r i j years or ".etA will nettle the question. Almost any on o can rend Ihr put out a border often, twenty , fhirty rods in length, and himself t ta adapt edneus to his circuinatiti and locality. POTATO VINES AS A MANURK. A new inducement for the cnltiva tion of this crop may be found in the value of thejtope a a fertilizer. It is well known that all vegetable suba - I a. I 1 ai

It has been known for a long time that rape cake and cotton seed are good fertilisers. From vim- experiments thut have lately come under oar notice, we are inclined to think that the vines of the potato may be added t.. ll,. Ilm .,' t f ... JZ? ------ - - nmi iii ately into the compost heap, since a chemical analysis shown that thev contain a large per cent, of potash. We see in the last report or Secretary Klint to the Maatachusetts Board ot Agriculture, that a practical farmer in Norfolk county has been apply . . TL ing mem as a top ürossing to graHH lands. This farmer says: "For several years we have been in the habit of raising fVom one to three acres of early potatoes for market. We have usually dug them early m August, and before the tops wero dead. The tops are taken directly from the 1 field and spread upon the mowing lands to very great advantage. We think the tops from an acre of potatoes sufficient to top dress an acre of mow -! ing land, and the effect is equal to three or four cords of good manure. It is a well ascertained fact thai the stalks of tho pot ;it i are rich in the organic elements of plauts. From berg's analysis gives in 100 pounds of. tho leaves, in their natural stale. .".12 to 5.78 "! cent, of nitrogen, and in the same weight of leaves dried. 82 to 02 per cunt, of nitrogen. According to tnc statement of this reliable cliomist, everv ton of potato totu saved would add to the soil 50 pounds of in oranic salts aDtl ii pounds ot nitro- j gon. hum vroniu makoatonot tiu ni worth lnort' than two tons fit Ichahoc irnnno. It in doubtful, howovtu-. whether tho Norfolk farmer adopted the best method of using theni. In spreading them upon grass land, in then green state, in the dog days, a largo part of the nitrogen must be lost. A much safer mode wonld bo, as soon as th potatoes are dug, to remove them to a heap and compost them with muck or loam. Wo have always noticed that such heaps arc soon thrown into violent fermentation. This would be a good way for decomposing coarse sods from swamps and marshes. All tin- ammonia evolved fiom the vines would be saved in the muck, and a large quantity of valuable compost wouJd be prepared at a very small cost. This suggestion of the value of these tops for manure is worthy of, curefnl trial by all who cultivate this crop. WINTER ONIONS AND LETTUCE. Do you like onions, either as salad or otherwise ? Would you like to have them fresh very early in tho spring, before they could grow after spring planting? "Of course I would." Very well, then, perhaps we can help you to them. Select a good spot of ground, prepare it well, and make one good bed of onions about the tenth of August. Make another' about the first of September. Sow the seed quite thick. Let them grow 1 till winter, keeping the beds free from weeds, and thinuing them out a very little. Whon winter eomes. over them over wit i a Kood coat o O . . ourse litter. Kurther south, the coat ing may be lighter. You may thna have the onions for use in March or : April next year. They will be excel- , lent then, if you like onions. Sow a bed of lettuco iu the same j way, at the same time or later, and protect it in the same way, and you may have that luxury vory earl- in I the spring. Try both these opera- ' tions, and you will probably thank us next spring for these hints Am, Ay- ; rimttvrist.
