Tho session lasted six weeks, and perhaps no Legislature over met and adjourned in the Stats, doing leas harm. There were a few measures, however, in which I took an active part, that may bear mentioning. The poll tax system was first established, the exemption in favor of widows, of personal estate to the value of one hundred dollars, from debts of deceased husbands; and the act giving a representation to the new purchase, to strengthen the middle and northern Cvts of tho State, in passing the law the removal of the seat of government from Corydon to Indianapolis. This latter act was warmly contested, debated weeks and finally passed by a very close vote. The first constitution provided that "Corydon, in Harrison county, shall be the seat ot government of the State of Indiana, until the year oightoen hundred and twenty-five, and until lomovod bylaw. ' It further provided, "the General Astetnbly may, within two years alter their first meeting, and shall in the year eighteen hundred and twenty, nd i very subsequent term of five - f . - yoar. c;tu o un ciiiiiiurutiou to bo iiüult f all tho whito male inhabitants ubovu t!ie ago of twenty-one; the number of representatives shall at tlu Movcral periods !' making such enuincratioii be fixed by the General Assembly, and apportioned among tho several counties-" The question w:i wlu tlu'i- it was comDctent forthe : Legislature to take tho census and make tho apportionment, at any internu'diute time, or whether it could only bo done at the expiration of eve7 five years. Wo carried the bill in favor of tho first construction, and tno seat of government was removed youi-M soonor than it would otherwise havo been. Wo had little important business before us; Gov. Hendricks was inaugurated, and Judge Parks olected to revise the laws. AN RLKfTlONKRBlNU OPtttATION. An incident neenrred in the election of Treasurer of State that may be in Btruetivo to candidates. Daniel C. Lane was the incumbent There was no tangible objection against him as an officer, but it was rumored that he could sec a short rieh man over the bead of a tall poor man. Tho day for the eloction was not fixed. 1 was among the warm friends of Mr. Merrill Our prospects ihr his election was vory poor-chanoea as ten to ono against us. In the winter of 1823, as I was about to leave Indianapolis for homo, James Whitoomb told me he was going to Ohio, and wished to travel with roe. Of course I was glad to have company, as the path led through the woods, and there was but three hons ee between Indianapolis and White Water. After an early breakfast we started, both riding good horses, intending to reach Dille s on Blue River, near where Kingstown now stands. Some hours alter night, to our much joy, we saw the light at the cabin, rode up, and as we dismounted the sound ofa Addle saluted us. Entering the cabin, there sat before the fire a lame young man by the name of Dille, with an old fiddle in his hand, scraping - - 1 1. A T away, making anything but music. g out 1 Im-. As he closed tbe door, Mr. Whitcomb took up the fiddle, soon put it in tune, and when Amos returned he was playing light and beautiful airs. Amos took his seat by me, seemingly cn tranced, und as Mr. Whitcomb struck up "IIatl Columbia," he sprang to his leet. "If 1 had fitly dollars 1 would give it ail ior inai nuuie; i never heard such muBic before in mv life." After playing several tunes Mr. Whitcomb laid tho instrument on the bed. What is the latest news from Lawrence?' is the first and most importunt question asked of every person supposed to be acquainted with the state ot affairs in that fumous little inland town. Every mail is examined, the stage drivers catechised, and every teamster cross-oxamiued, for the purpose of ascertaining what Walker has done and what ho is going to do. Kor tbe last ten days no new develo peine tits have been inudc, and nothing has occurred, oxcopt a reinfbreement of tho troops statioiiod ut Lawrence Two additions! companies have been sent from Port Leaven worth to koep company with den. Walker. The way in which Walker proposes to use these troops has not yet been as crtained, but it is surmiaod he ; will muke an attempt to interfere with, and will endeavor to prevent the election under the lopcka I'onsti tution, which occurs next Monday. W hut other object ho has in stationing the troops near Lawrence, and increasing Lis forces, it is impossible tO surmise Had the suppression of the Lawronco city govern meut been his only pportutnty action. The Cabinet is on Are, and Buchanan on ly hesitates to issue his mandate for an uncompromising war against the Free State party. Further advleee from Walker will doubtless prompt him to assume the responsibility of forcible subjugation of the citizens of Lawrence und to issue instructions to Walkor for tho suppression by tho troops of all proceedings under the Topeka Constitution. All recent .vents indit-ate this as tho scheme of Walkor. That he will succeed in in volving the Administration, (if, indeed it be not the instigator of the lot,) seems more than probable. hould those conjectures bo fulnlleu, then poor dispined Pierce will have ,-.. t0 t,xult over tho diH sgraco Of his rival, Buchanan, at Shan orer that of Walker. The non did didirrace ol the disjuThinii 01 ine lopoaa legislature by the United States troops, on the fourth of July, 1856, caused even Pierco to disauow any conncction with that act of infamous despotism, but how much more infamous will bo an attack, by order of the Government, upon citiaens, for peaeuably expressing their political opinions through tho hallot-oox. t . i t a rvn a It seems unreasonable to believo that a Constitutional and Republican Government, could be converted so easily into a Military Despotism, and terror and force, bo so easily substituted under it, for law. But tho rocont base prostitution of Federal uu thority, by Walkor, has shown tho insufficiency of our government to to protect its citizens in tho Territories against the tyranny of a Preaidont or of a Territorial Governor. The people of Kansas ore now literally at the mercy of Walker, both for their liberty and their lives, unless they have strength to protect themselves by force. Constitutions and laws have proved utterly useless for their defence. Psor. Ci nsinoham We learn that Rev A.
