THE VAUBY FARMERDEVOTED TO THE TRUE INTERESTS OF FARMERS, MECHANICS, AND WORKING MEN.
VALLEY PARMBR.
1. In Otiom AND HlSTOST. Buck haut, or literally Oeech-wheat, ao enlled from it smcI resembling la shape the atact of the beeeb, ia ooncedd bjr all writers to be a native of Ota trJ and Northern Asia, ibouf h the time of iatiodaetioa iato Europe ie differently staled. B.me aa that it waa brought bj the Moora iato Spain, ia the eighth century; othera thai it came with the Craeadera ia their return fron the Hoi? War in tha twelfth, and, be that aa it may, it ie certain that it baa bean cultivated in England only about two hundred and fifty year, lis triangular grain, rrow-enaped leaves, and fragrant, par pi iah white flower are too well known to require mora particular daaeriptioa. f. INTBODCCTION AND PAODOOT IN ma D, 8. it waa firet cultivated in th United State, by tha Dateh on the Hudeoa. and the 8we1aa on the Delaware. It ia mentioned among tha grain producta of tha former, aa early aa 1026 and KaJrn, tha Sweediah Natural iat, who vim ted thia country in 1741, apeaka of it aa found growing in Pennsylvania, and New York Thvee ate'.ea alii I produce a larga ah are of the product of tha country. In I860, or soma 6.000,000 of baNhda. Ita cultivation, however, is rapidly stndiag through tha Northern and North weavers atatea, and the aati nal producer and their immediate neighbor. 3. Vaaistibbop Bucwbeat. Buck wheat belong! to the Persiesna tribe! that eommooiy euluvnted is botanieally known ae 'be Polygonum Fagopyrum. Amoag its varieties are tha bin or "fa natiiaa buckwhea," very popular aame tea years aioce in Eastern New York and Pennsylvania, and tha "booteh Gray," now generally grown aa far aa we are acquainted. A varisty called Iudian buckwheat (P. Tartarieum.) is growa to aosae xtent ia New Fngland, for fattening swine, not producing flour pal tble as bumaa loud. The kernel ia hard, ooarae, and nearly ovate, and the product often large, often yielding, on rich, new soil, ona hudred bushels per aere. Rat half a bushel per acre, of aead, is required, and it may be sown in May, or aa lata aa Auguct, though early sowing is most advisable. Tl.e flour, ground without bolting, is nearly the color of sulphnr. 4. Boil aid CriTtma. Almoat any coil will produoa buckwheat, but it seems best suited with light, warm lands, of moderate fertility. It is aa weil adapted aa any grain to low, moist Un-l, which dry off late in the spring, aad suffer from diough dvriogthe heat of summer, when early sown grain require most moisture. It germinate quickly, and soon throws oat sufficient roots and leaves to secure a supply of water, poth from the soil and atmosphere. The cultivation usual y is urn pie to plow fie land, after green sward, early in the spring, then harrow or gang at the lime of sowing. This grain is often sown en ground infested with weeds, which it is desired to aobdue; in that eaae mor through preparation rhould ba given, that the entire surfare may be entirely covered. In all cases it is beat to have tha ground in fine tilth, and generally to roll after harrowing in the aeed. Though buckwheat will grow without manure, it fella the spoliation ae quiek as any other plant, and a corresponding increa in growth ia produced. Plaster aad ahM exert an immediate influence and benefit. 6. Time of aowiae. Amount or Ssso. The time of eowiaf ie uenally between the 80th of June and tha 4th of July, though it may be eowa earlier a soon as danger from Uta froeta is to ba feared no longer. Karlyaown buck wheat is liable to be blasted by the beat of July and Auguat lata eowa is equally ex nd during the drouth often occurring leptemoer, and in addition to thia early frosts may cut it off sis it begins to nj n. The cultivator must suit his owe oonvsnienoe ia this matter, remembering that some lands are sooner affect ail by drouth and frosts than o'hera. The amount of seed moet generally sown, ia one bushel per acre, but it is better to employ lea than more, especially on tha bwtter soil: the great fault in sowing this grain is that too much seed ii given. f l ural New Yorker. Raisimo and PaMtRf.a Tomatoi T. many persona there ia something unpleasant, not to say digusung, in tba fl vor of this excellent truit. It has, however, lonjj been used for culinary purpose in various countries in Europe, and baa been of late extensively cultivated, and become a general favorite in the country. Dr. Bennett, a professor of some celebrity, considers it an invaluable article of diet, and ascribe to it very important medical properties: He de elaree: 1. That the tomato ie one of the moat powerful aperient of the Materia Medica, and thai in all those affections of the liver aad organs where calomel is indicated it is probably the moat affective and leeet harm lul remedial agent known to tha profeasion. 2. That a chemical extract will be obtained from it which will altogether supersede the use of calomel in the core otdiseraae. 3. That he has successfully treated diarrhea with this article alone., 4. That when uaed as an article of diet, it is almost a sovereign remedy for djarjaneia and indigestion. 6. That person arriving from the E ist or North to the booth or West, should by all mean make use of it aa an aliment, as it would in that event, sava them the daager attendant upon those violent bhjlioue attacks to abieh almost all uoaeclimated persona are liable. 6. That the citizen in ordinary should make use of it, either raw, cooked, or a the form of a caisup, with their daily food, as it ia the mot healthy article in the materia alemntaria. Tub Aftbctiohov tbb Hoaax. Riding in a stage a short time sioee over the hills of Western Pennsylvania, I aked the privilege of riding with the driver. This, in pleasant weather, and in a strange oouotry, ia my favorite seat. Many think it a digraoe to sit out with the driver, but often I find philosophy guiding the horses of a publio stage. If a passenger politely ask the privilege of riding out wth the driver, it will he a politely graute ; and
no situation is favorable for learning the local and most interesting history of the country through winch a traveler ia passing. "That near horse," said I, "is a fine animal." "Yes," said he; if I had hie mate money could not purchase them. How old do you think he lt' "Probably eight or nine, said I. ''Ha ia twenty four," said he; "I have driven him nine Tears ou ihis rout. Hi mate waa just like him they lisvn grown up from colts always worked together, and stood in the amktable. No person ever appeared to think more of a friend, or even a child, than those horses did of eaoh other. If one wae absent a night or a day, the other whin aeyed, and looked and moved about the stable, calling for his absent friend. Last winter said ha, his mate died. Since then he has been mournful and unhappy. Ha ia constantly calling for his mate when in the Stahle, and ha will not permit any other horse to occupy the place of bis companion in the stable. In all other places he is quiet and gentle, but will allow no one to be a companion at the stable where he had ao often and so long enjoyed the aoelety of hia departed oompatuon But be ia failing fast said my friead; he is evIJsntly pining away with grief, and poor old Jim will soon join in another, and I bop and believe, a higher state of existeuoe." "Why," said I do you suppose a horse haa a conscious existence after death?" "Certainly I do," said be, "I have the aame evidence of it I have that I shall exist. Have I lov? So has a horte. Have I affection, sympathy, memory, mind, reason? So ha a horse. Call it instinct, if you please 1 cull it reason. True a bona has not the organ of mathematical calculation, but many human beings are aa destitute of them as a hoiae, and certainly they are not necessary to a future existence. It is the moral faculties, alone, that will survive the grave. In these, said he, old Jim ia pre-eminent. Does any one love his friend? Certainly not better than Jim does his. Does any ona strive to do his duty? Jim is a pattern of dutiful obedienoe. Does any one remember and mourn for lost loved onee? Poor old Jim is going down sorrowing to the grave for his loved mate." Hera my companion brushed a tear from hie eye, aa he reined up to the post office in Maroer county, and delivered his mail. R. Prairie Farmer. Food ro Milch Cows in Eablt ßpRino. We have jus received a setter from one of our subscribers in which the writer gratefully acknowledges hi obligations for certain hints derived from our columns, whioh he says have proved of great value to him this spring. He desirea.ue to give the subsiano of his experience to the public, that others may have su opportunity to avail themselves of the name pUn of feeding their cow that "come in" early in npring, whioh has proved so satisfactory and pruSiahle to himself. 1 he following passage from the latter referred to will give the more important portions of the writer's es prinoe: " Winbmg for certain reasons, to have two of my oows to come ia a little earlier in the apiing than the customary period, middle ol April I took into consideration early laat spring bow 1 was to provide them with succulent food until grass waa aufflciently advanced in the paeturea. Drao hts become so scarce and dear that I eould not make any dependence upon tbat for mashes ae I had done years previously. Tbe various statements which I bad seen in th Cultivator, in regard to th value of root crop for milch cows lad me to determine to make a trial of some of theee aa the main srtiole of food for my early milch eows; aad as the mangel wurtxel beet waasaid to keep ia better ondition than moat other roots. 1 raised a small patch of it with a few rows of the sugar neet. Of these 1 stored as many as i thought 1 would need for two cows from the first of March to the first of Hay, at the rate of about half a buahel a day to each eow. I have been feeding at this rate since the cow commenced to give milk, in the early part ef March, and am quite satisfied that we ffat nearly, if not quite as much milk as if the eows were at pact un. and much mora than if they bad only dry hay. Tbe trouble of cutting them op and preparing them ha been much more than 1 anticipated. I hav sprinkled over the beats, after being cut up a few handsful, of corn meal, and of late, about three pounds of crushed ash-cake. Since uaing the oil-cake wa have richer cream and more butter. The writer of the above is so well C' insed wi'h a trial of raising roots and ding them out to milch cows, as to make him quite enthusisstio in recommending it to others. We think those who provide roots for their cows will be aa well satisfied aa be is.
