Oar peeuU roporusr At Cleveland prwttotea tome urn days go, tbaft a di Vision of ths Presbytarian Charoh (ß, S.) naf iaeviuW. Wo hava sine published tho action of tho General Assam bly on the subject of slavery -tin protect of tbe Commissioner from ti.e 3outb against tbo action Um ai vr of the North through a com?u.".oo, with Prof. Allen, of Lane Seminary, at ita head. Wa now lay betöre oar reader the addreae of the Southern Commissioners, published aiiice the adjournment of the Asa-rubiy . In this thay call Ibr a Convention at Washington City on the 27th of Aug., to form a new General Aaseu bly -an Assembly in which there sha'l be no discussion or agitation of the subject of slavery. It will be interresting, juit now, to glance at the series of eventa which has led to this result. From the first, the Presbyterian Church in this country, was decidedly Anti-Slavery. In 17t7, before the General Assembly waa ibrmed, the Synods of New York and Philadelphia passed strong reeotious in ta vor of the abolition ot Slavery. The Aaaembly. in 1793, approved this action ot the Synods. Kesoolutions in regard to the system and its evils, were adopted by the Astern blies in 1796, 1815, and 1818. The action in 1818, nearly 40 yean ago, is one of the strongest Anti-Slaver' document ever written, and was paased almost unanimously. In 1Ö37 just twenty years ago tho Prubyterian church was divided. This subject of Slavery was one of the apples of discord, though it was not the apparent cause of the division. Since 1837 the branch of the church which is popularly called Old School, has twice discussed tho subject in its General Assemblies, and has acted upon it, re-afilrming the action of lb18. The branch called New School baa discussed the subject more or less every year, and passed resolutions in re&renoe to it, as the lathers of the cburoh did. Until reoently the ministers and members of the Presbyterian Church in tho south have acknowledged (tacitly at least,) that slavery waa a legitimate subject for ecclesiastical discusion. They have admitted that the system is -vrong, that ita ezistance is to be deplored, and that its ultimate abolition should be an object of prayer and effort with every Christian. Within a few years, however, new doctrines have been published at the South, and extensively received there Tboy are in substance that Slavery in right; it a normal condition of society ; is sanctioned by the Bible; it, like other ibr out of government, ordained by God; that it is not the duty ot Christians to do anything wiih a view to its abolition, and that it should not be discussed at all in General Assemblies and other ecelesiastial conventions. These views, first announced by Dr. Roes, of Hun ts vi lie, Alabama, and a few others, and regarded aa ultra by nearly every body, both North and South, soon came to be the accepted view of the New School Presbyterians of the South, and they insisted that the whole Church should endorse tboe views, or at least refrain from condemning them, aud even from discussing them. The A-ombly at Clevoland by a
unanimous Northern vote, declared ! simpally two things: 1. That it would abide by the sentiments of the fathers of the church on the subject of slavery, and reaifixm their uniform, time-honored testimony against it: 2. That it disapproved of and condemned the new doctrine of the South that "Slavery is right uccording to the Bible." To this action, the commissioner from the South objected by a formal protest, thus placing themselves in opposition to tbe whole spirit, teach - , - - ä i - I t ,L Itjg and tmkm of the charch for the ; !irt7.7-.J A a 1 tkitM new, to any tgwlM ol Ab- j I tiiunam In an TTurf fi i iu til l nt i Z i T .V . II e r them tbr slaveholdinjr, that they ohject, but to a reaffirmation of the testimony of the churuh, and a coudomnation of i h doctrine that Slavery is right according to the Scripturea. On the original platform of the charch, the North stands undivided, and the city of Ht. Lousi with it. The Southern churches having only cue-tenth of the entire membership of the body, will try to form a new organisation on their new basir , that Slavery is right and must be discuss ed. A HTJJGBY CaULTZT BAG The Buffalo Express relates an amusing incident which occurcd at Erie, a few days since. A gen leman j left Clevoland for New York at an early hour in the morning, 'vithout his breakfaat, and being very 1 ungry, upon the arrival of the train it Erie, j entered the diuing-room, and placing! his carpet-bag upon a chair, sat down beeide it and commenced a valorous attack upon the viands placod net ore By-and-by tbe proprietor of the ataUishment caroo aruund to collect f trea, and upon ruachin oar friend, ejaculated: "Dollar, sir!" "A dollar!'' responded the eating man, "a dollar thought you only charged fifty cents a meal, for one, eh?" That true, said MeanneeB, "but I count your car pot -bag one, since it occupies a seat' The table was far from being crowded:. Our friend expostulated, but the landlord insisted and the dollar waa reluctantly brought forth. The landlord passed on. Our friend deliberately arose, and opening his carpetbag, full in ita wide mouth, discoursed unto it sayiog: ' Carpet-bag, it seems you're an individual a human individual, since you at least, I've paid for you, and now you must eat, , upon which ho seized everything eatable within his reach, nuts, raeins, apples, cakes, and pies, and amid the roar of tho bystanders, the delight of his brother passengers, and discomfiture of tho landlord, phlegmatically wont and took his seat ia the cars. He said ho had provisions enough to last him to New York, after a bountiful supplv had beer vrvod out in the cars. There waa & least oight dollars worth in the bag, npon which the laodkrd realised nothing in tho way of profit. So much for meanness. wTCol John W. The same correspondent states that the reason of Davis' iuterfearenco in behalf of Walker, was a letter in Walker's handwriting being found on a spy, addressed to McDonald, the agent of the Nicaraguan steamer, stating that he was reduced to extremity, and begging them tor the use of a steamer, or to do something else for bis relief.
