White Watbb Vallbt 1 T O 1URT J UUO it, JOVi FIlöoot)WiN: Ever since your debut into city life, your friends hero Mtwa entertained fear for the American's safety; not bo much from tho raveneons wolves without, as tho foes within jour own city. But the muroifal manner in which your r;ty coumporariea have dealt with you, and the bold and fearless tone of the American, panning the even tenor of its way, nad well nigh caused us to forget our solicitude, until! tho Cincinnati Enquirer of last week has given us increased anxiety, in tho eloquent, logical, and very severe manner M which it ctmdecends to notice your lato editorial reflecting somewhat on that peculiar journal. The Enquirer man seems in great trouble at the unhappy position in which ho finds him self, oven among his african allies in Indiana, and in his extremity would even drag himself out of tho slims, into which, by his own depravity and supreme devotion to slavery and whisky he has (alien, by holding on to Um skirts of tho American! and thereby, if possible gain what be terms a ''reliable position. Poor fellow, little did he dream, when in his hot phrimsy to save his southern masters during the Presidential Campaign whose prop erty he is, that very many of his articles then penned, after tho sateHs moot has passed away would prove 5 the sourceof so much serious troubles, if not his complete distraction. His position very forcibly reminds ene of the old lady Scruggs who was frequently complaining that sho had nothing (It to eat, and nor house was not (It to live in when on a certain occasion one of her guests, took her at her word, ordered his horse and left. 80 will many of tho patrons of the Enquirer, as there is not now a sufficient amount of excitement, to prevent them from seeing through the miserable tissue of lies and contemptible double-dealing, which ho has all along been practising. Vsrrily, that word "nastincss," which tho American used concerning Bro. Robinson's late Jacksoinan, was a nasty word in the oyesof tho Enquirer, and illy become that paper, to have its pages soiled with so foul a word, whose litirature, week ai' week is made up of the low braggadocio of tho negm kitchen, largely interspersed with all the seduction and murders that transpire under its notice! As an act of justice, Brtght and Wright must do something for it, bnt I hardly know which one owes it most. The season here is very backward and wet. The early planting is rot ting, and the cut-worm is very destructive, especially in sod ground. Wheat and grass look well and promise a largeyieid. Pathor Havens that old pioneer in mothodism in Indiana has lately visited us, and dispensed to as the word of consolation. He seems to belong to another generation, aud stands as it were, so near the other side, that by standing tiptoe, ho can hold converse with his old companions, gone before, and at the same time, talk back to us on this side. Notwithstanding tho croa kings of the African Jesuitical sheets, .mi tho other of Jesse D. Bright, tho M. K. church was never in a more prosperous said hoalthy condition. NV VILM S for the Aurnr Iran OCHET öiHT. Happy yea, blest is ho who has one true sympathizing 1'riend on earth one to whom he can reveal the depest anguish, tho greatest care, and tho heaviest grief of his heart, and there find sympathy; How much of secret grief Uea nidden in the deep, dark chambers of the soul grief, tbe cause of which, must not, cannot hi revealed to a curious world, theft it lies in its sombre shades causing the spirit to grow cold and gloomy, and consuming the vitals of its victi m slowly, silently but surely, bearing on wurd to our untimely grave without any apparent cause some bright and love ly being, ELven the lightest care while kept concealed, lies like a mountain on the breast. Reveal the heaviest grief of the heart, and it will be lulled to rest by sympathy. How often do we see the fond and trusting wife tho victim of silent irrief she who has left home, friends, and dear associations to share a life of varied fortunes with him sho loves, and whose affections she thought all hor owa. For years perhaps the course of true love runs smooth an interesting family clastor like "olive plants about their table," and all seems love and ioy unfeigned; but in an unlooked for hour, she perceives a coldess, a chilling indifference to the little civil ities that love requires, on the part her husband her trusting heart will not harbor the shadow of a doubt of his faithfulness to her, but thinking there is something lacking on lu-r part, she taxes her utmost energies to reader herself more pleasing and home attractive, but all to no purpose she at length awakes to the fearful reality that all is not right. The inordinate love of gain has rendered him morose, or the wine cup deadened his tender sensibilities yea more, too often, his fondness and preference for less worthy than herself, engroses his better feelings, and she no longer has a full share of his heart's beat affections a feeling of distrust comes o'er her sad and gloomy is her lot there is no kind friend to pity or retrieve, no loving ear to listen to tho wail of sorrow, the bitter thoughts and chilling fears no words of love tike healing balm to soothe the troubles of her heart. Onward she moves in her same untiring course of devotion, until at last she sinks into the tomb a victim of that heart cosvsumer, silent grief. If there is no human friend to whom we can turn in hours like these, when the soul longs to ends its bitterness, why despair.' there is One i was once "a man of sorrow and acquainted with grief," whose earis ever open to the cry of distress, and whose sympathy is toward the children of men. "Thea taosgh all earthly Ilea be rieea, Salle, .r ihoa heel e frtoaH in heavea. L1LIA. A bright child asked his mother where he should go when ho died? uTo Heaven, " said the mother "Will I get anything good to eat there?" "Tea love, von will be fed with the bread of lift "Well, I hope they II put lots of buttwoaii." r
TUB rCUITIVB SLAVS LAW CASB.
It is now said, thoro were just seventeen persons in company with the Sheriff of Greene County when ho arrested the valiant United States Deputies at Lumbarton. It appears furthor, from the account of one of the citizens of Champaign County who was in the custody of tbe Marshals, thai the ofBcers for which they were takon u , consisted in laughing at tho Deputies for the cowardice shown in the failure to capture the fugitive slave! There is another item connected w ith incursion of tho Deputies to areeat the individuals who ridiculod tho Marshals for backing down when the nigger showed fight. It'hasbccu stated before and is now repeated, Unit the Marshals whilo skulking back to Cincinnati by an out of tho way route, hut two of these persons in irons, and threatened to kill them besides. This if a brilliant business for the underlings who by authority of the United States, insult and degrade American citizens for indulging in a "horselaugh" on seeing a dozen officers armed to tho teeth, driven off by a runaway 'nigger' whom they had traveled a hundred miles on purpose to capture. Truly the dignity of the United Statos has suffered terribly from the ridiculo of these four men who stood sround Hyde's cabin, and laughed at the conduct of the Marshals Dayton Journal, J une 6. What's best to prevent old maids from despairing? "Pairing." A dentist presented a bill for tho tonth time to a rich skinflint. "It strikes me," said the latter, that this Uta pretty round bill." "Yes," replied tho dentis, I've sent it around about often enough to make it appear so, and now I've called to get it squared." Fred, tho prince of wags, was getting homo rather late, and a little hap(y; whon passing by a dark alley, a urge two-fisted fellow stepped out, and demanded his money. 'Money," said Fred, 4moncy, I've none; but if you will hold on a minute I 'll give you my note for thirty days." -'iVMumms, it' wo cross a bridi at night must wo pay toll?" "Of oourso, my cieur; hut why did you ask?" 'Why, becauso the river will go home to sloep." Oh! tho river never sleeps." "Then why has it a bed mamma?" "Be still you brat."
