(hawidea, "That -I. fir old aoall" Tbo vry wortle bring up vividly to the mind e eye one long sine gone to bur roet, to whuoo naruo there wore for yuan a tweet appendage. When first wo nw her, her hair waa blanched by many wintere and many eorrowe; bat each of thoeo wintere had been looceeded by a balmy apring, each eorrow by a aanctiflod joy. Never till thondid aire aeom beautiful. I had regit ied one advanced in years like a trow in autumn, and standing only for the wild storms to whistle th rough and beat against. But in "Mothor Allon" I saw the loaves only nipped and faded, the tree stood firm and strong, with its boughs still bending beneath tho weight of golden fruit. Her abundant hair was soft and silvery white, daubed with no vile dye, and ' bidden beneath no trees stolen from tbo brow of youth. It was combed plainly over that calm, pure brow, which even time had not the power to wrinkle. Beautiful she could uever have been oven in sunny girlhood, for her features were large and irregular; but lowoly she wae oven to tho oyos of strangers who bad yet to learn bor worth. Hor eyee were deeply set, giving an earneat.thoughtful expreaeion to her lace, whilo the calm smile on her lipo told of the perfect peace which dwelt in her bosom. In her face ono might have found a fulfillment of the promise, "Ho infill have perfect poace whoHO mind ia stayed on thee." Mother Allen waa no lady of leisure with nothing to disturb bor mind or interfere with her tranquility. In early hfe, while her children were with her, eh was called to drink the cup of poverty and unrequited love to the very dregs. Many an hour of anguish did she pass, in comparing the happy days of her maidenhood with bor tuen present cruel desolation. Many a nigbt, while the tempest roared among the trees which surrounded her comfortless home, whilo be who had sworn to protect her was a wanderer in the haunts of vice, did she kneel beside her sleeping babes, aad plead with her mother s God that lie would shield the defenceless stranger and her darling little orte. How often in solemn midniirht did her plaintive voice mingle with the murmuring of tho pines, whilo she plead with Him who "hoarcth the young ravens when theyery," that He would send broad ia the desert to those who were of anore valne than they. In heraironv for her husband, she would sometimes almost forget tho temporal wants of her family, and cry nnto Him who came to seek the lost, that Ho would reetoro the beloved, deluded wanderer back to Duritv. to home and to dutv And she brought her case before the throne, as if she expected an answer of mercy. When the morning broke npon her sleepless eyes, she would
gaae from the door of her unfinished j
dwelling on all tho beauties God had spread out to cheer the heart ot the weary. And for these sho offered heartfelt praise. Some persons, when in anguish of spirit, almost reproach Nature for its calm, joyous course. They eel as if it heightened their sorrow to see all things gay around them, they fee) that Naturo should east off her mantle of green and robo herself ia sackcloth, that the flowers should wither, the stars fade, the sun hides its face, and tho birds chango their warbles into wailing dirges, all because one soul is in heaviness. But not so was it with the pure-hearted, the refined Ruth Allen. She thanked Heaven that when all was darkness and desolation within, she could look abroad upon a world of light and beauty; that when earthly love had deceived her, she could east horaolf still on the bosom of One whoselove and compassion sre infinite. She saw tbo lily that without care or la bor was so richly clothed, the wanton birds who were so tenderly sholterud and euetainod.the lowing herds trampling down their abundant provision in field and meadow, and raised her earnest eyee to heaven, whispering, in childlike faith, "Father, wilt th ju not mach more- care for me and mine?" And think you that tho young wife and mother plead in vain? Never. "If ye, being evil, know how to gie good gifts unto your children, now much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things unto them that ask him?' While Ruth Allon was yet speaking her prayer wae heard and answered. A solemn providence which deprived an evil associate of life in a moment, roused the sleeping conscience of her husband. God spoke, and he was reclaimed. As a humblo penitent, be sought morcy of Heaven and forgiveness of her whose young hopes he had so cruelly blighted. Old things with him wore passed away, and nil things bocome new. God smiled abundantly on the labor of tboir hands. The ehowors fell freely, and the eun lay long upon their meadows, their flocks multiplied in tho pasture, and their nit tie in the stall. They now bad bread onough and to spure, and she whoso oyos had faded by stitching wearily over tho dull midnight lamp, patching tho rags of hor children, had now the Joy of seeing them oomfortablo and decently clothed. Her gratofull heart was full to overflowing. God had given her more of temporal good than her humble spirit nad ever craved. He alone knowoth how much of this oarthly good was given in approbation of hor affectionate trust in Him. "But shall a man rocolvo good nt the hand of tho Lord, and not evil?" No; for "the day of prosperity and tho day of advorsity are sot ono over against tho other." While the long deserted home was beginning to bud and blossom liko arose, the angle 1 death spod thither, and over-shadowed their dwelling with his dark wing. The first-born, who had boon his mother's stay, who had sympathised in hor anguish, kistoifuway her tears, and whisperod, "Wait awhile, mother in thirteen short years I'll be a mun, and then you shall never suffer any more" he, the child of her lovo and her sorrow, was taken away, and his place left vacant in tho little bed, at the hearthstone. Sho had then no timo for tears hor care was all for, tho other two, who, while their brother slept in peace, were tossing in burning fevers on their bed of pain. The second, and then the third, in one short week, were laid beside him in tho little graveyard of the now sottlenient, and the home of Kuth Allen, which so lately hud rung wjth tho merry laughter of three noble boys, waa loft unto her desolate. How doaolato bereaved mothers only can know. Did she not wrap hontolf in deep gloom, and weep us one who would not be comforted, whon this worst of all evils befell her? No, she gave her sons to God they wero not torn from her. Ho Ihr from charging God foollishly, sho even thanked him that while many wretched mothers were weeping over ruined sons, she had tho ossuraneo that her whole family wero folded tor ever in the ho som of Infinite Lovo secure from hunger, neglect temptation, and pain. Then, when this free-will offering hud been inudo to lluuven, did le with a chastened mien go abroud among the poor and vicious, seeking for children to fill tho plueos thus made vacant! During the ten years that foiled, four nameless little ones were received into her family and hor heart. What had onco been a forest settlement, was last changing into the metropolis of a growing State. Wealth poured in upon farmer Allen, by tho sale of hie rich land. Servants and laborers filled their house and ground, and to them all his wife was a mother. Sho addressed each dependant as "child," and they were constrained to believo that fn all her dealings sho had their interest at heart. Tnon she begun to be called. "Our mistress, dear sowl," and then neighbors and friends, und finally everybody tailed her "Mother Allen, dear soul. ' A rude emigrant, all unusod to such tones, exclaimed, after being a week or two benuuth her roof, "Huro I thought afbor Icoora to this hooee that Protestants were all liko wild bastes. I was taught by my mother rest her sowl that not a fut of tbim hiritica could ivor iutcr luven, unless they first coom into the hooly moother uhoorch. But, faith if the samo is thruo, it's raesclf would rathor bo after living forever with the likes of my misthress, dear sowl, than in biven itself amoung my own coonthry folk; for it's drinking and fighting thoy be for over, when there be so many of thems togi titer, and not a Protestant at all there to separate thim and make pace. Och, ocn, but there's hiven in her eyos my misthrcss, dear sowl." Mother Allen had her trials, among tho many working people her husrvjs. eouopguoo jojt 'peAoidtue puuo often abused, and her disinterested love repaid with black ingratitude. But through all she remained the same. No ear ever heard her taunt those rude children of oppression with thoir foreign birth, their curly poverty, their false religion. Sho reasoned with them as human beings she entreated them for their own aakes, and wooed them back to duty by hor patient effort Mauyalady reared in a homo of elegance, might have learned lessons ot dignity and propriety from Mothor Allen in hor intercourse with, and her treatment of her servants In no way is the taue lady more readily distinguished
from the counterfeit, than in her manner and dealings with these humble member of her family. Tho love of this dear woman begun at home, but it did not end there. The sufferer very whero found in her a friend, thoorring and fallen child a mothor and an encouraging counsellor. In her closet, at hor fireside, over her work, among her neighbors, in tho Church of God, overywhoro, it was ovident that sho lived not unto horsolf. Tbo most hardened scoffer was forced to admit that she was a bright and shining light a beautiful example for the wives, mothers, and mistresses around her. The luw of kiudness was ever on her tougue, and the gentlest and toudcrcst rcudy rebuke on her lip. Man a youth who had scornod a father's counsel, and despised a mother's outreaties, won by tho sweet tones and uffectionate intoreat of Mother Allen, has listened trespoctfully to her carncs warning, and been drawn by her efforts to forsako the seat of the scorner and seek God's house But tho ploco whoro this good woman's influence was the most deeply felt and it was a place she coveted wae av tho bod of pain. The young who, having boon ofton reproved hud hardened thier hcnrta, whcn they found suddon destruction comeing upon thorn, would call for her in tho hour of thiet soul's extremity. "Oh," criod one such, "I cannot soo pastor his tare would only remind mo of tho many warnings I have roceivod unhooded from his lips but bring Mother Allon to me I can almost see 'hope' now in tho memory of her dear faco. Lot her como and with her faith pruy for mo." But tho frost of age fell upon her, its infirmities bound her fust, so that sho could no longer go about doing good. But when sho could not go out to her work, tho work came in to her. Tho winter of her lifo hud no long durk days, no listless melam holy, no fretful tuiirmurings. Sho moved urouud her houso in a whoel-chuir, demanding little cure, but receiving much the object of a thousand little acta of delicate lovo, which money could nover purchase A domostie being asked if sho woro not weary, ropliod, "No, I'm nover in waiting ujKn her, for her patience would shame me if I were' Mother Allen had learned that most beautiful of lessons for women, how to "grow old grucufully." She was not only borne with, but she was really admired for her ago, and the charms that clustered around it. Life's sun, which had been so oil en concealed by clouds, had its setting in a culm bright sky. We may aimed say of her thut sho nover died, her going whs so liko sinking into a quiet aleep. It wus ono cold bright day in winter, that she entered into her rest. Hor chair had been drawn to the Western window, that she might use tho last of daylight in finishing one of several little garments for a suffering family. The last stitch was set, the last button sewed on her thimble was placed on tho window -seat, and tho spectacles lay in her bund. She was not iced gazing at tho gorgeiotis
sunset, reflecting its splendor upon snow und ice-clothed trees, muking the whole seeno like a world of diamonds. Tho cheerful bell rung for tea her aged companion and her at tendunt came to draw her choir into tho dining-room. Kuth took an arm of it, when her husbslid said, "She is asleep, dear soul." it was the eloef thut knows no waking. Sho wu not, for God hud taken her. Four strong men, whom sho had suved in childhood from poverty, gutherod urouud her bier. Thoy were not ashamed to weep for one so dear to their hearts. A bereaved community mourned her loss, while miiny poor and friendless turned from her f fravo to trust in God. Whenever tor name is mentioned, or her words quoted, it is as, "Mother Allen, .that dour old soul." She wus a most beaut i ful exumpl of the first class of women referred to by the poet.
