Then let us still be doing, What 'er we And to da With a cheerful hopeful spirit And free hand, strong and true. 0KA1TH00D "The generation that can nae Ajnerioan inatitnttona for freedom, moat oome from American homea. Bat of a race of aelf-indoigent, haif-tanght girla, can come only a nation of trai tors t liberty. In half the land today, woman ia enamored to the vanishing nplendor of feudalism, and aooiety slain be ra ovor a volcano of insurrection. In half tho land she haa not learned to prefer tho soul to tho pa rae, and society here ia the government of tho poor man of to-day by the poor man of yesterday. The American young woman is the mother of American ciyilismtion of the next quarter of a century. We aro oompelled, in a discourse of ropublioan society, to speak with the class in whoae handa are the iaauea of tho national destiny; to portray tho ideal of American womanhood.' "It ia not true that woman ia dependent upon man, owes him obediunoe, or is a supplement to his nature. Doubtless, all human being, depend upon each other for innumerable offices'; the father upon the child, the non 2 ton his mother, tue husband upon e wile, and woman upon man. The great apostle commands woman to obey man, aa all christians are toobey each other; to use tho sacred dependencies of life as helps to the primal obedience to the Creator. Man can do much fbr woman, as much as sho can do for him: but neither can stand to each other in the placo of the Almighty God. "This primary law being established, the way to womanhood oecomes clear and direct. First, woman must know herself, and for what place she is especially fitted in life. Nobody can know her nature, genius and aspirations, so well as horself. She must never consent to be treated as if she had no individuality of character, or pushed about until she lodges upon some vacant shelf of tho social department. With this knowledge, womanhood consists, socondly, in making herself the greatest, beat, and most beautiful character possible to her native eudowmoats ana peculiar circumatanoes. Whether her tastes and talents are chiefly domestic, or, in addi- . tion, literary, social, exocutivo, artistic, industrial, let hor accept her gift as God's treasure, and hold neroolfrosponsible to Him for its faithful dovolupmont and u " I would therefore say to the young woman of America, know yourself; and whatever good gift Is in you, improve and apply in life. Make the nioatofytmraeif in present circumstanota, ana devote any gain in position to anew effort fbr womanhood. You are in some respects peculiar, and there is a spot appointed by (rod for your reception. Nobody can find that spot, or place you in it; but you alone can discover it, and sustain yoursell' therein. This advice will dimiipate many girlish dream, and and wako some grown-up children; bat 1 must say there is but one way to womanhood the dedication of tho soul to God; the knowledge of ono's own nature and iMwur. and tlu lifo long effort to make one's self as noble a specimen of a woman as native giftu mam the lot of mortality will allow. The most formidable obstacles of American womanhood, are fashion and personal aelnehnes. "Hoctety is often a great obstacle to womanhood. No ono knows how much we owe to society. W ithout its institutions of family, atate, church, and its code of social laws snd customs, much of our virtue would nevor exist. Every soul knows some moment when it would mil, did not the whole past experience of humanity, concentrated in the public opinion of the hour, enfold its frailty in providentia! arms. But the ue of aocial ircumatnnccs, i to hu)o character, and when society presume lieyond
this limit, it is to be resiatod with all the might. If aocial influence use woman in toad of being used by her, they are a terrible curao. Propriety is not godliness), neither is being no worse than tho multitude, being good enough. Whoe er attempt to aorvo society, has omb irked on a most Qu x otic enterprise; though thousands of martyr in the church of this world.
have heroically perished in trying to keep up with the fashion, riiBhion is a good waiting-maid, but a hard mi strew. .Now, sho tells a woman that her whole duty lies within tho narrowest domestic life, as if she were created to keep tho world supplied with nurses, cooks, and milliners; now sho demands delicacy of person, and bakes her servant in not rooms, covers her face with a thick veil, and reduces her to a diseased caricature, which mother Eve would disown; now. eho demands the most hazardous exposure of person, and compels her de votee to breast a nor -wester behind n hred of muslin, or bravo a mile of mud with a French slipper, or dance in public arrayed like a heathen goddi'rW. Sho plat-en horprivuto mark on eet doom, and if St. Paul lived the street in one house and . Beau Brummcl in the other, the apostlo of dandyism would cut tho apostlo of Christianity. She sovers friendship, scoffs nt wo man's holy love, and mocks at religion. We enjoin no noedless singularity, but defend the soul against society, and demand that woman shall not be the actor in a social spectacle There aro two classes of women; theone are born, brought up, marry, oat, drink, dress, sing and pray as everybody does, and hope it will be in fashion to a '.a .a . a aro to heaven; the other is the uooio lew, who, by the weight of character destroy and create fashions, change circumatanoes, and hold the reins of life. How can the American woman become the broken flower, drilling down the current of social caprice. whon she may bo tho Island around which the stream shall part as it rushes on its turbulent way. "Would one generation of women obey the oldest law of tho soul, how would tho numberless charming varieties of onr national womanhood emerge from tho cave of a Procrustean conventionalism, and each in it own peculiar loveliness and power, enrich the social sphere I Woman, to whom this revelation has eome, crown it as the queen of life ; woman, to whom it has not appeared, pray in the true light that the sun may riso upon thy soul ; man, aayou would have tho being who, next to God, rules thy destiny, the image of Divine Benignity, cheer thy companion in hor high success ; Amorioa, the causo of woman a a . a m a t hoou is the cause ot repuDiican civintion, its attainment the achievment ot thy nation's undying renown." Rev. A. D. Mayo. FASHIOHABLI WOMCT Fashion kills more women than toil or avorrow. Obedience to lash ion t a greater tranagreasion of the laws of woman's nature, a greater injury to her physical and mental constitution, than the hardships of poverty and neglect. Tho slave woman at her task will live and grow old, and see two or three of her mistress pass away. The washerwoman, without scarcely a ray of hope to choer her in her toils, will live to see her fashionable sisters all die around her, and a kitchen maid is hearty and strong when her lady has to be nursed like a sick baby. It is a sad truth that fashion-pampered women aro almost worthless for all the great onds of human life. Thoy hwvo but little force of character; thoy have still less power of moral will, and quite as little physical energies. They five for no great purpose in lifo; they accomplish no worthy end; they are only doll forms in the hand of milliners and servants to bo tlressed and fed to order. They dress nobody; they feed nobody and save nobody. Thoy writo no books; they sot no rich examples of virtue and womanly life. If thoy rear children, servants and nurses do it all. And whon they ore reared, what are thoy? What do they ever amount to but wonker scions of tho old stock? Whoevor heart! of a fashionablo womsn exhibiting any powor of mind for which she became eminent? Read tho biographies of great mon and women. Not ono of them over had a fashionablo mother. They noarly all sprang from plain, strong-minded women, who had about as little to do with fashions as with the changing clouds. AJTOTUB lutein Oil FOB prohibition Every remedy is recommended but Prohibition. Every remedy but Prohibition fails. One of the reasons given for establishing bands of music to play in the London Park, was that they would withdraw people from the public, houses. How this has failed is shown by the London Weekly Record of the Temperance movement: ab . l AH. s s sb ".no ot Uic viiuniiug unolo'Mcs tmSunday bands was that they would withdraw people from public houses. Tho vory contrary, however, is the truth. Nome or tho great taverns, which are tho resort of tho most corrupt and corrupting classes, nro following the example of Hir Benjamin Hall, in sotting up Sunday evening hands. Among these places is tho Kugle," City Road, where a commencement has been made It issaiil that some 4,000 are thus gathered to gether" paying an admission fee of 6d. for a male and female, or Öd, each for femaloa. What may take place in tho gardens wo know not, but the state it tin' thoroughfares around the tavern is truly shocking iMiriitgthe whole evening crowds of showilydresed mon and womon, and a great number of boys of from twelve to sixteen years of age, parade about. Most of the shops are open, with .I m as i s great uispiav ot gas-light. It is os tentatiously announced that the bands play "sacred music, so that ribuldry, totuicco-smoking. an! giu-drinkim' are brought into juxtaposition with tho solemn tunes of "Comfort yo my K'pif. "l know that my ueueemer 6th," Ac. Is not this the climax of profanity? Another tavern opposite the "Eaglo" has, in vory self-defence, adopted the same pernicious measure. And so tho evil snjeads.
