THE VALLEY FARMER-DEVOTED TO THE TRUE INTERESTS 0 MMERS, MECHANICS, AND WORKING MM.

BY FARMER,

After the early cabbago and other is sown for transplanting, and the lettuce and radishes, and such things started, attention must be given to planting asparagus, rhubarb, v 1st planting an asparagus bed, it is the better way. if possible, to procure the plants of a nursery-man Twoyear -old plants can be obtained for about two dollars per hundred, and a crop will be grown two years sooner than if the seed wm town. Tbt best variety is the purple-top, which is the purplish looking variety commonly sen in oar market!. Home suppose there is a larger variety resombiing this in eTerything but it9 srse, while other think it is good eultivation that makes the difference. We have seen that raised from what was called giant seed made very dwarfish by poor culture. To raise plants the seed must be sown early in spring, in drills, an inch or so in depth, and the rows eighteen apart. The heel, ground for the feed Is a light, rich, loamy soil. As soon as the plants are up the ground mnst be wull worked. Asparagus may be grown in almost any soil, if well drained, yet the most suitable is a light, deep sandy loam This should be dug deeply, about two fact, and plenty af manure incorporated with the soil. A piece of ground fifteen feet by twenty will produce enough for almost any family. This should be divided into three beds, ftror feet wide, leaving an alley eighteen inches wide between each bed, and making three beds four feet wide and twenty feat long. Two such beds will be ample for a small family. At this stage it would be well to sow on the beds about half an inch of salt, and rake it in. The asptragus is naturally a marine plant, and is very fond of salt. Now draw a line lengthwise along one of the beds, nine inches from the edge, and cut a trench on the outsidejof the lino, tlx inches deep. and in that trench net the plants, nine or ton inches apart, and so deep that when the tnnh is covered, tho erowns of the plant will be about two inches below the surface of the bed A-t the plants are pnt in, draw a little earth over them so as to secure thoin in their place Having finished one row, cover them, and raku off evenly, and proceed to make another furrow one Übt from the first, and plant as before. Thin plant will give four rows to tho bei The bods will require no eare the first summer, but simply to destroy the weeds, and this mast be don carefully, so as not to injure the plant. If aalt was sown pretty freely before planting, the weeds will not be troublesome; If not, it can he sown o vor the beds any time during tho summer. Rnough salt to kill awery weed will be only a nice relish to the asparagus. In Nov bor cover the berth' with three of rotted manure. In the spring this may be lightly dug in with a fork, care being had not to go deep enough to injure the crowns. The second spring jf the cultivator is very anxious tor asparagus, the strongest can be out, though most gardeners recommend leaving thorn untouched till the third year. We should not hesitate, however, to cut moderately the second reason, if we had no other way to got this delicious vegetable. All the eare the beds will reqniro after this, is to eat down the old stalks, pall up the woods, and cover with manure every mil, which should bo forked in thenpriug Vfter the ma nnre is forked in, rake all looae stones, rough manure, Ac, into the alley. Give evory season, in tho spring, a dressing of salt. A correspondent asks how long an asparagus bed, if properly troatod, will keep in good condition. To Sbourk a Good Crof or Early Lima Brans. 1. Got a supply of good teed now. 1. Take some thick sods, each about eight inchoa square, and plant one or two beans in each, on the dirt side. Place the sod in a hot-bed, or in some other sheltered place, where they can have the sun, and be free from frost and wind. When the frost are past, remove the soda to the beat part of the garden, and give the plants the best culture. S. Pinch off the stems when they are about six feet high. Thus you may haw good beans a week or two earlier than otherwise. Tub EsiMTor We em. Then dig the ground two feet deep, and at least a space of four feet in uiameter, and also dig and mix in with the earth one bushel of wellrooted barnyard manure for each vine. Do not use fresh manure, and if you hare no old, then mix one quart of lime and two quarts of rrround or bro ken bones, with one gallon of chamber ley; scatter it over the ground beforehand, and dig in thoroughly. When you plant tho vino, see to it, first, that the roots are not dry and dead: out one; if it ia black on tho inside, it is dead; try another; if they are blackened and dead, cut them away. The roots of young grapevines will not bear much exposure, and often plants are set out when not a single root will grow, and thua tho plant is not better than a cutting Cut your vine after planting, so that only two buds are left to grow. If you have been careful to prepare the ground as above have spread out the roots carefully, in setting have not trod upon the ground, and afterward are caroful to keep the ground hoed once in two weeks, all summer, your vines will be six feet high in October.
