My remedy is very simple, easily tried, and will do no hurt if it does no good. Tuko a penknife and bleed in the third wrinkle in tho mouth. This remedy has always cured when others failed, s. D. H. To PrturT Vegetable In Winter. If it is desired to have potatoes in tho spring as fresh and mealy ns in October, they must bo preserved by making a layer of potatoes, then of dirt, filling nil the crevices, and so alternate ly until you have secured them all. If vo j will try this for once 45 to 00u, and oxpeet to have them fresh und good, is not a cor rect one. Potatoes grow in the dirt, and nro best preserved in it. Du t carrots, parsnips, turnips and ruta bngas, aro also much hotter kept by packing them in dirt. I iio dirt for potatoes and other roots ami tubers should bo about as moist as is needed to grow iu in toadvantago, and if sandy in its composition, so much the better. Michigan mir. For this country we Wit a email, 'earlyfcorn. and one whijH partakri of the flinty character.This preference it chiefly based upon the following considerations: Ihe smaller varieties nearly invariably ripen everal weeks earlier than the larger kinds do: thus insuring them against injury from early frort. 1 hey may be crowded, both in the hill and rows, much closer than the larger will bear to be. In addition to these considerations, we are of those who believe that for fatUnino purposes the hard flinty corns, bushel for bushel, are worth at least one third more than the large, chaffy varieties. For reason not much dissimilar, we prefer the smaller and more compact domestic animals to those great orergrowing slabsided beasts, which so many admire, despite their ugly, expensive ind nearly worthless qualitiesQretnica$llt Banner.

HOW TO ESTROY l'.tl.VKN. I. ICC ON It will often hnppen, in spite of one's best efforts, that a naif will become lousy. Soon ho will rominunicalo the vermin to all in the Hock; and they will increase with astonishing and alaring rapidity. It is not always an easy matter to rid tbe youthlul bovines of these pets; and many will contract divers other ailments in consequence, which too often provo fatal 8 me of the books recommend one rt-medy, and some another moat of which either prove unsatisfactory or troublesome in application. A simple but invariable efJVctual remedy is used in this section, which may not he known to the majority of your cattle breeding readers. Il is smoking them with tobacco one of the etfl lew good purposes which the vile Wt-ctl may be made to subserve. We use a made after this fashion: The bv'tt is a round piece of wood fifteen inehea in length by three and a hall inches thick, with an inch and a quarter hole, bored through it longiiudi nally. A hollow mouih-oiece should be made to fit into the bowl, end also a pipe somewhatshsrpenvd at the point to carry o(T the smoke, each about six inches in length. Fit tho latter snugly into its pi ce, till up the bowl with the cheapest smoking tobacco, put in a coal ol tiro at ihe top, adjust tho mouth piece, and you are prepared to blow destruction to millious of lice. Tho smoke is easily blown through the creature's hair to the skin; but o facilitate the operation a thick blanket should be thrown over tho calf, leaving the head uncovered when thu smoke will tearch out nnd desiroy every louse. Five to eight minute' smoking will bo sufficient. Tho nits will survive the operation; hut it second smoking will do tho business fur (hat generation, also. Sinokin:; all't-rH Mie lice as it does the "human rrcatm" it kills them off. The same remedy will bo found effectual for ridding colts of the nuisance. C. A. Ivy eis Buildings. It is a mistaking idea that ivy renders a structure damp and hastens its decay. On the contrary, no'.hing so effectually keeps the building as may be seen by examining beneath the ivy after a rain, where it will be found that the walls are dry, though all around is deluged with wet. Its exuberant nnd web-like roots, issuing as they do from every portion of the branches on which il grows, binds everything together that comes within ilo ir reach, with such a firm and intricate lace-work, (hat not a single stone can be removed from its position without first tearing away its protecting safeguard.
