THE VAUBV FARMER-DEVOTED TO THE TRUE INTEREST OP PARMBRS, MBCHANSCS AND WORKING MEN.
VALLEY FARMER,
i.l. Di.ll? IN HOHNES. Mr. Editok: The question is often asked, is the Glanders in Horses catching? More than 20 years ago I began to have this question asked me, and have observed it ever since with varied opinion. I have seen a glandered horse work beside his mate three years, stalled and fed together, without taking the disease. I have seen glandered horses purchased by men who did not believe tho disease contagious, aod in a short time have all his work horses glandered. I have seen horses that I thought caught the infection by being hitched to a glandered stall. I have doctored glandered horses that no doubt communicated it to my hostler. I have in two instances communicated it to other horses by innoculution cn the septum, after scarfying. I am now a firm believer that any horse will take the con tagion by innoculation in part of the head. I applied it to ouo back of tho cars, which made a rapid and large swelling, appear ing to uftect tho membranes of tho eyelids and nose; the horse died of a broken leg which he had broken ono day previous to tho experiment. I am also satisfied that it is extremely dangerous to hordes that havo any sores about their nose, mouth or lips, or even in a high levered condition of a chronic character, and it would bo oertaiu to be taken by all horses having the colt distemper, or catarrhal fever, if exposed. I have ever considered it an imposition upon community to see a glandered horao from homo, or hitched at a cummou or public hitching post. Are glandors curable? To this que&tiu i ' would answer, iL depends upon circumstances ; liko ill other diseases it does assume an incurablo stage. Either from want of knowledge of it or faith to t.y, or a correct and thorough treatment, most glandered horses die. I havo made it a matter of interest f r many years to dissect and examine all the phenomena in tho dead patient. After ex amining five glandered heads and bodies, I am bold to say tho 'glanders is r.othing inoro or less thuu cankered ulceration of tho mcmbtau?s of the head. I bave examined those where tho entire membranes, fleshy part and soft bones wereentirely consumed, and tho diseaso preying upon tho hard tones, the iuamation extending to tho brain, which causes the death of the animal It is frequently the case where the glandered horses blood is high, or by taking cold, or a fever sots in, which is seldom recognized by the groom. I am of the opinion that glanders is a mure simplo disease than most authors claim them to be. I havo known somo cured of ono or two years' standing by administering tho medicine with a syringo and probaug. Modicincs thus administered which aro calculated to allay the. inflammation und destroy the canker, will with a proper medication of the system, overcome this disease in a shorter time than many would expeot One thing I have found invariable through a practico of 20 years: that is, if a horso has glan ders, or any external ulceration of a chronic character, the internal organs aro in perfect hoalth. On tho contrary, if the horse appears extremely line and sound externally, it is best to examino closely for internal unsoundness. Advico gratis: Never doctor your horse until you are satisfied you understand his complaints. Good nursing is more safe than harsh treatment. Ohio Cultivator. To Take Stains out op Linen. Staiu a caused by acids can be removed by watting the part and laying on it some salt of wormwood: then rub without diluting it with more water. Or, tie up in the stained part some pearl ash, then scrape some soap into cold soft water to make a Lit her, and boil tho linen till the stain disappears. Recent stains of fruit may be removed by holding tho linen tightly stretched over a tub, and pouting hot water over tho part. This may be done before any soap has been applied to it. As soon as the stain is made on tho table linen, 6c, rub on it common table salt, before it has had time to dry. The sftlt will keep it damp till the cl.jti it washed, when the stain will disappear, or wash the stain Ik'htly when the cloth is removed. Heavy carrot crops for cattlt I return carat- of gold. will
FOR CATTLE.
The advantage of using cooked food for cattle can be so easily verified by experiment that it must soon be generally adopted by cattle growers and dairymen. The food thus given is moro easily and perfectly digested, and will consequently produce a much larger amount of good moat and pure rich milk than if given in any other form. A well informed milkman who has used the aperatus manufactured and sold by Messrs Scott & Hedges, of the Little Giant Cornmill Works, for cooking food for cattle and hogs, sends us the following: "I commenced the use of your Steam Boilor on the 7th inst., at which time my ten cows gave sixty and a half quarts. My daily feed was ten buckets of middlings and cob meal about equal parts. Quarts. ...SOJ 66 Cows gavo in beginning On tbo Stb thoy gave On 9th (reduced feed 2 buckets) . . . .6 J On tbo 10th they gavo. 1 1th iath 13th ..71 ..78 .73 ..76 Uth 77J My milk has improved in quality and my cows in appearance. 1 shall make further experiments in feeding tho corn and cob meal separate, as also with clear cob meal, and report again in about ton days." C. II DAVIS, Milkman. Cincinnati, Dec. 15, 1850. From this it appears that the gain in 7 days was 17 quarts, being US per cent, gain in milk, with a saving of 20 per cent, in food. Tho milk produced from such food is altogether difTorent both in quality and appearanco from that yioldcd by cows feed on distillery slop. ('in. Com. POTATOR IX TAN. It is nine years since J first directed attention to the planting of potatoes in old tan, a practice I have ever sinco followed with tho best results. My potatoes grown under this method, havo been witnessed by hundreds, both at public oxhibitions aud in a growing state at home. At the former they havo always stood pre-eminent. Although I must admit I am ono of tho most fortunate in escaping tho diseaso, I do not presume to say that it is ntiroly through growing them in old tan. This is, however, a very great point in their favor, and it is entirely through using this that my potatoes have always called forth such high comments when oxhibited, being perfectly clear and freo from scab. It is by selecting tho earliest varieties, planting early in spring tho middlesized tubers in old tan, taken up and stored away with sprinklings of limo as soon as sufficiently ripe, that I always manage to escape tho disease; that is, I have scarcely had any bad ones worthy of notico. and unless these points aro strictly adhered to, wo shall never successfully escape it. A great portion ot tho potatoes around this neighborhood were perfectly ripe by tho end of July or begiuninc of August, and the haulm dried quite up; the crop at that time was pencctly sound; in fact, scarcely a bad potato was to be found. Now, if theso had then boen taken up and stored away, tho crop would have been perfectly free from disease. Tho great poiut since tho appearance of tho disease is to havo the potato crop sufficiently forward to escape the risk of vicissitudes of weather, and the damaging effects of wet and cold at the stage of ripening of tho tubers, and ihi3 cannot be attained by anything short of the method abovo recommended. The potato crop has suffered moro in parts of this district this season than has ever been kuown since tho appearance of tho disease. I havo been call ed to witness many acres of po tatoes that havo not paid tor the labor of digging up, yet all tho potatoes alluded to were quite freo from tho diseaso up to the first or second week in August I trust that tho folly of planting late potatoes, and carelessly leaving the early ones in the ground to grow a second time, has been fully established this season, by the appearance again of tho disease, which generally takes place after heavy rains about August, and by so many persons complaining of their potatoes growing a second time; but if we are to escape tho evil, it must be through perseverance and tho following method: Plant early varieties as soon after tho second week in February as the ground will permit, previously dressing tho land with lime; place them trom two to three feet apart from row to row, and use all the old tan you can procure; and lastly, dig up the tubers as soon as the skin is set hard and the haulm died down; store them away perfectly dry, dusting them over with sprinklings of lime. Having the last two seasons grown a large colleo-
tion of potatoes, selected with care both in and out ot tan lor experiment, I am able to state that some varieties are very liable to tho disease on all kinds of soil, while others havo never shown tho least symptoms of the malady. This should be borne in mind by all potato planters. Cor, tardrnrrs Chronic! Eng.

Mr. Editor In Saturday's "Journal," I find it elated, on tho authority of Mr. Joshua Howard, of Maryland, that "the nncs of the tre; are not of annua! growth, but are one at every full moon to the season, and varying with the formed, growing ;ngth of tue bummer. I am inclined to think that the popular opinion, in regard to the growth of these rings, can hardly an yet, be characterized as an "exploded ciror." In support of the old, nnd almost universal belief, I send you the following extract of a ltt-r, written by Robert Yatss (at the time a Surveyor, but afterwards, in 1700, Chief Justice of this State) and addressed to the Hon. William Smith, the well-known historian of the Provinco of New York. The letter, us a whole, possesses consderable historical interest; but I will only trouble you with its concluding remark, as lollows: "1'roof of the number of streaks grown over marks hits often, in our court, been allowed to ascertain Its age. I have, therefore, been at some pains to discover its ccrtainty;and can, from my own experience, declaro that it amounts to demonstration. Amon:; tho variety of instances, tho two following are the most remarkable: In the year 1762, I was present when a number of trees wcru marked, on thu survey of the township of Kinderhook. In the year 1772, I re -surveyed then: lines, and ordered several of those marks to be opened; nnd, thereupon, found that all those trees, though of different kinds.invariably counted ten streaks above tho your 17G0, tort-survey the bounds of a patent, which appeared, by tho deputy-surveyor's return, to have been originally laid out, for the patentee, in tho year 17 3b Tu satisfy mysulf us to the certainty of the tteei which were shown mo tu marked on his survey, I bored a beech tree (whereon the initial letters of his name appeared) .landing in the corner of one ot the sides, and found that tho streaks above it counted exactly thirty" Albany Eve. iour.
