UN la llrary. Wehsvorvot rsad a mora interfiling book, for many a day. than this, from the ffftn of UtoM excellent book publiitea, sflrfT.wa QBTOX A MCXXIOAJf , Of Aubuni, If tw York. Being a delineation of Methodist Msuif, it will bo read with pec 11 inlerMt by MothodUU, bo., like "Shady Sida," it will be reed with intenao interettbj Christians of eil denominetiom, and by .tho who wish to peep into tho reel workings of the itineracy, who are not members of any denomination. Thai its pictures are lifelike, erery reader will admit, except those who see their own pictures drawn, with dagnerreian precision. At the risk of a prosecution for infringing upon the copyright, we publish the following sketch of a Quarterly Meeting. It will be nsw to many of our readers, but 04km will recognize it ss a familiar acquaintance. We would like to add tho sketch of Old Mrs. Blake, but our readers mnst rat the hook for thomielr es. Of ooures it oan be had at the City Book Store, Dr. Keely's, and of the traveling presch generally: TUB OOABTSSLT COXrKBXXCS. AJ the close of the Saturday service of ; quarterly meeting, the quarterly convened, as usual, for the transaction of business. This body is composed, according to Methodist usage sad discipline, of the preachers,' exhorters, te wards, sunl class leaders attached to the station. Ilaving the oversight of tho of fairs'of.the congregation, they meet once in three mouths, to take into consideration the Interests submitted to them, and decide on the policy to be pursued. The present being ths first and most important meeting for the year, the attendance was unusually large, embracing nearly every member. The list having been called, the presiding elder presented various topics forconsidsrsÜoo, which were attended to without much discussion, or tho manifestation of any very special interest At length, the report of the committee to estimate the preacher's salary was called for, when s difference of opinion was at once apparent. Mr. Dickson, the chairman, made a majority report, allowing him five hundred dollars, which was an addition of fifty dollars to the sum usually paid. Thia brother argued that the expense of living was increasing constantly ; thst the church was abundantly able to pay that sum ; that many ministers were actualiy suffering for of a competent support, whilo some being driven from the work nltogethar ; and that it was due Mr. Stanly to make him a respectable allowance, which the committee claimed was no more than dene in the estimate presented. This view of the subject was met by the arguments usually employed on auch occasions. Mr. J ones, a local preacher, tho't that it was wrong; to allow a mintatcr to get rich out of preaching the gospel, and he was sure Mr. Stanly could live on loss than five hundred s year. As for himself, he preached for nothing, and did not believe in making so much difference between laborers in tho samo field. Besides, many other charges paid less, snd got along just as well. For one, he sho'd vote against the report Mr. Bennett thought the old allowance quite sufficient. lie was sure it did not cost him so much to live, and he did not see why it should a preacher. Still, if the brethren thought best, ho should acquiesce in the arrangement, and increase his subscription accordingly. Mr. Pindar was greatly displeased at tho proposition. In his viow, it was another departure from old-fashioned Methodism. He remembered tho time when the preachers received less than half the sum now proposed, and yet were satisfied. In those days thsy worked hard, traveling large circuits, snd endured great hardships, but were never heard to complain of tho want of pay. "I don't believe," said he, in hireling ministers. You msy de pend upon it, if the Lord calls a man to preach, he will take care of him anil not allow him to starve. Let the preachers learn to trust more in Provi deuce, and we we shall see better times." "That 'a It, " ejaculated one of the stewarda. "Brethren," said Mr. Roberts, another of the stewards, "I was not a member of tho committee, but am highly pleased with tho report I think we pursue a mistaken policy when ws suffer our preachers to be embarrassed by an incompetent support The laborer is worthy of his hire.' If a man devotes all his time, week days and Sundays, to the service of the church, ho is entitled to a living from the Church; religion, Justios, and fair, honorable dealing, require such a return. Tho distinction referred to between traveling and local preachers is altogether proper. Our local preachers are engaged in business, like other men. They sacrifice but little time to the duties of their office. The traveling preachers have no othsr business. They are allowed to hare none. We give them enough to do to occupy all their time and talents, and they are desecrating the sacred offios whsn they turn aside to servo tables. "Brother Bennett compares a preacher's sxpensee too. is own, and from that comparison draws his inference. Now, as matters are, he can como to no safe conclusion by such reaoning. Brother Bennett is a farmer, end one half the items for which the preacher pays the cash, he counts nothing. Generally, farmers have no idea what it costs to live, where every article, great ami small, has to come from the markst" T presume Brother Roberts is about right" inte rrupted the honest old farmer. "I have bee a counting up a little, and have corns to the conclusion that tho report is not much oat of the way." "And I wai it to say a word or two," said Mr. Dickson ' in reply to Brother) Pindar. He seems to j ldge the present by the past and argues tha t because a man could live on two hundred ' dollars when everything could be bought he can do so no Brother Pindar i. Stanly with the prices thsy brougl at half the present prices, v. I would like to ask f he will supply Brothor necessaries of life at tho it at the time of which speaks. Us has a produce of all kind show hie faith in h ths proposition." "Brother Pindar that" Mid Mr. Ho' large farm, and raise a to sell. Let him now is reasoning by making iU be far from doing prta lie thiuks Pror-
idenoe will take care of ths preachers.
What are we to understand by Providence? Is it feoding tho hungry by miracles, or clothing tho nsked without human agency? Far from it. I believe Providence calls upon us to do what is hero proposed." "I agree with Brother Roberts," said Mr. Anderson, one of tho class-loaders, "but it scorns to roe, five hundred ilollsrs is more than is necessary. I am a mechanic, and have everything to buy, but it don't cost roc as mnch ns that to support my family." "About how much docs it cost you," naked Mr. Dickson. "Not more than thrco hundred and fifty dollars" "Wsll, let us take that for tho basis, and see how we shall como out. A preacher baa some sxpensee which you do not. You have no help in tho family; Brother Stanly is obliged to koep a girl. And then there are other items. Let us see, Assumed expense, - - -$360,00 Wages and board of hired girl, 130,00 Moving expenses, 30,00 Additions to Library, and Periodicals, say 40,00 Company and traveling expense. say 50,00 Total, $590,00 It is clear, Brother Anderson thai your experience will not help tho case." "I will givo it up," anawcrod tho brother, looking not a little puzzled at tho result "But you havo not includod all," said Mr. Roberts. "Thcro is tho extra expense of clothing. Wo should not bo willing to have our minister go about in tho community making pastoral visits with just such clothes as wo wear in our shops and on our farms. We would not go thus ourselves. The samo is true of his wifo. And this mskes quite an sddition to your figures." "And then," put in Mr. Heimelt, "ho has more calls for benevolent objects than wo have." "Yee, and generally responds more liberally than do some of us," said Mr. Anderson, looking toward Mr. Pindar. "It is all for pride and )opularity," added tho latter. "I have no doubt" B&id an olderly man who spoke for the first time, "that sll aro willing that Brother Stanly should have all ho can get, bnt I don't see how we can obligate ourselves to pay so much. Tell us whero tho monoy is to como from lfore you ask us to adopt this report. If you will clear that up, I will go in for it." "From our pockets," answered Mr. Dickson. "Wo are tble to pay twice as much. All we lack is tho disposition." "I was opposed to this move when it wss first introduced," said Mr. Bennett, "but can't see how, iu justice, we can agree on less than five hundred dollars. Tho facta and figures are all against us. I think we should adopt tho report as it is." "And there is the donation party," said Mr. Jonea "And tho wedding fees," remarked an other. This started a now train of remark. The donation party generally netted about one hundred dollars, and sovoral now proproposed to reckon it on tho salary. As will bo scon, this would cut down tho allowance, and mako it less than over before. The proposition was looked upou with contempt by o very member who had a spark of liberal feeling, and yet it was pressed by a few with great earnestness. "Tho donation, if ono should be made, dont belong to tho quarterly conference," said Mr. Dickson. " Wo had better wait until we havo a donation, beforo deciding what to do with it. If tbo people make ono to tho preacher, it is his, and not our.-, and wo should ho in pretty business to take it from him to pay our debts." "I hope wo will never mako another do nation party," said Mr. I'.! dar. HWt never did make ono yet," said Mr. Roberts, sarcostiiully. Tho donation was soon disposed of. Tho conclusion was reached that the piorterly conferenro had nothing to do with Mr. Stsnlv's irifis, and the matter was dropped by mutual consent. Tho voto was taken on tbo commiiteu's report, and it was adopted by a largo majority. With tho exceptions of Brothers Jones and Pindar, all woro plowed with tiio re sult They were never satisfied, and their murmurings awakonod no surprise. The reader may wish to know if this is the usual way of making out a Methodist preacher's salary; and if ho himself has no voice in the matter. Let him not be surprised to learn tlutt it is. The discipline of thekhurch fixes thebasis,by enumerating items of expense which are to bo ostium tod in tho maimer above represented. To the contract tho minister is no mrtv. No claim is allowed which could bo collected by a process of law. And thea m in. im cases, the sum agreed upon is never paid For deficiencies thero is no remedy. If tho sum is not made up on tho charge, tho preacher suffers tho loss, and generally without uttering a word of complaint The world, probably, does not furnish a parallel, whero men go forth and dovoto their lives to a calling, without a voice as to tho romntiisntion to bo received, or power to collect thst which tho other par ty from time to time sees fit to promise. This system of the voluntary support of the ministry, though sometimes creating hardships, is nevertheles so scriptural and i ireriice.il v successful, that no effort has ever been mado to remove it It was ad opted and is perpetuated by tho ministry themselves. "Wheru tlx- membership is governed by an enlighto I I and consist ent nintv there in but iitti difllCUltV in , j , - carrying it out" Dr. Durbln in UrthvemaHf.
