Corn and Cob Grinding. REPORT Or THl COMMITTEE. The undersigned being called upon by (he proprietors of Corn and Cob Mills, and after a practical trial of both old and new corn, the following facta wer obtained. The 6rat Mill, Little Giant, exhibited by Mr. Hedges, of Cincinnati draft, for old corn, 375 Iba., for mew eorn, 225. Weight of old corn ground, 85 )b., new corn, 46 lbs.; length of leTer,'(12 feet; grinding surface, 8 inch ts. After the trial of grinding, lOd. nails, brick bats, and other hard substances were put into the mill and passed through without injury to the same. Price, 550.00. Next was the Excelsior, exhibited by W. L Farquhar, of Brookville. Draft: for old corn, 350 lbs., new corn, 150 lbs.: weight of mel, of old corn, 77 lbs-, of new corn, 28 lbs.; length tf few 11-6. Prico, $50. There is one point in this mill that deserves notice, and that is. that the grinJin surface is formed by a ring, that, when it is worn out, may be replaced at a small expense, compared with the cost of n now mill. Another point in this mill is, that it delivers its raoal in a h.lf bushel without shoveling up. Next was the Star Mill, exhibited by Mr. Curtis W. Smith, of Laurel. Draft, for old corn, 375 lbs., new corn, 176 ; weight of meal from old corn, 86 lbs., weight of meal from new corn, 28 lbs ; length of lvver, 12 ft. Prico, 45. After taking into view all the points, there wcro two of the committee in favor of the Little Giant, and one of them in favor of the Escelsior, two of the committee b-.ing absent at the time the awards were made up. The committee all agree iu saying that each of the mills did their work well, and that they each of them fully sustained theii reputation for grinding feed for stock. Each of the mills performed 20 revolutions. Further, the committee would also mention that the Excelsior has a set of rings furnished at tbo time of sale. AH of which is respectfully submitted. A. For lbs Americas. Reflections. Me Editor: As have passed through the political excitement that has existed in our country, and iho final results are known, we all have time now for sober refleetton. It has occurred to mo that someling might profitably be said on the moral a pect of things, especially in our own Slate And while I have looked and waited in vain for editors and correspondents, more able than myself, I have concluded to present a few things, by your permission, through vour paper, to the public. And in doing this, I wish to disclaim, at the setting out, having any design of making it a political question, or applying it to any (particular party as a whole; but only show ing the state of things that have been brought about, and how that has been j done. And Ibis I believe should be ; charued to the individual rusponsibili tj of prominent leiders not to any par- - aS S a I e tl Iff At f nr n,'in 1 it-: n 'i,i. v li- iJfi " "7 p-.p : J' I Known tact tiiat witn some wno nave 6;;ureJ largely in the strifo threugh which we hare just passed, that it seemed to be a studied design to attack religion not, it is true, directly, but indirectly, and yet perhaps more effectually, than if '.hey had come out in direct opposition to it. They did it by attacking the ministry, and trying to prejudice the public mind against them. And here I ask tbe render to pause and investigato this thought. Is there any more certain way of influencing the mind of man to reject a subject, than by rendering the herald of it odious in his estimation? But again, it is further plain that thii effort has only been leveled at the Protestant Ministry, by those who havo seen fit to make such attacks, and that consequently tie design was " to unde.rrat', not only the Christian religon, but religion in that form, and that only, in which it is formidable against vice. And hence, with them, it was their personal opposition to virtu, and not an essential part of a political system. The President's Message. President Pierce dies hard. He does not make what Dame Quickly calls "good end." Instead of dropping off ike old Jack Falstaff, in a ire n tie mood, ''babbling o' green fields, he dies cross scolding and cursing like a drab. His Message, sent into Congress yesterday, is the most unbecoming and malignant party diatribe we have ever seen from such a quarter. Onehalf this document is devoted to a studied falsification of political history, as tho basis of a libel upon those of the American voters (over two millions in number) who disapprove his Administration. This is done under the false pretenco of giving to the country 'information as to the state of the Union." It is in keeping, it is true, with the whole tenor of his publio career, and only shows that the man who enters upon the Presidency an aspiring demagogue is quite certain to quit it a disappointed, soured, and resentful one. It proves that throughout his Administration, President Pierce has been nothing but a partisan, and that, even now, ns he surrenders his place to hisjtuccessor, and his own aets to the judgment of posterity, he finds it impossible to rise above the party level upon which ho has been living, or to seo anything beyond the vulgar party necessities of which he has besm the slave. In this document, President Pierce asserts that those of his fellow-citizens who supported Col. Fremont fur the Presidency, though "pretending only to prevent tho spread of Slavery into new States," were "really inflamed with a desire to change the domestic institutions of existing States," and that for this purpose they waged war upon tho Government, transgressed what they themselves know to be the limits of the Constitution, and endeavored to prepare thj people for the desolations of civil war, "burning cities, ravaged Heids, nd tilaughlvred populations," by which alone, as they are well aware, the objects they seek can be attained. If President Pierce believes what he thus asserts, his retirement should be into an idiot or insane asylum. He lacks tho common sense needed for the discharge of tho common-place duties of private lifo. The assertion is flatly contradicted by the declarations of tho parties assailed, by their characters, by all tho probabilities of the case, by every kind and dfgrco rf evidence required for its refutation. In its support not a particle of evidence can be adduced. It is tho offspring of his own morbid and diseased imagination, or of a partisan rancor which spurns probability, and is utterly indifferent to truth. But the President does not content himself with thus placing upon permanent reeord his aspersion of the integrity nnd patriotism of a vast body of the American people. Ho places by the side of it a daring misrepresentation of tho history of the country. He asserts that in the Missouri Compromise the question of excluding Slavery from tho Louisiana Territory was for the time disposed of by the ,Jo7,on of a geoJraEal line of lim 1 , f . f h 'tlin!QI1!?0 0f itation," in face of tho langnago of j the law itself, which declares the pro Uibition of aiiivcrv to be 'fortoer.' llu Mltlkivil Wi tiiiJt I WW ww m sere wrwv a . .. a . a s asserts that "the enactmi.-nLwh.cn es tablished the restrictive geographical lino was acquiesced in, rather than approved, by the Status of tho Union," in face of the fact that not n single State of the Union, nor n single member of Congress from any State, ever proposed its repeal from 1Q20 to 1054. He asserts that in refusing to extend this lino to territory acquired from Mexico, "the North repealed it J as a legislative compromise ana pcrsistently violated tht compact, 'if compact ; there was," 10 face ot the fact that , the compromising compact by its own j terms was limited to the territory acquired from Louisiana. "Thereupon, adds the President, raising these false statements of history to their appropriate climax, "Thereupon, this enactment eeaied to hove binding virtue in any ttnte, whetber as respjets the iNo-lh or the South; and so, in effect it vat treated on the occasion of the admission of tho State of California, nnd the o-gan-itation of the T erritories of New Mexico, Utah nnd Washington " Vt e dely the President or any of his ,:i of evi-"i-nii-i ...... i.iu itiin-i J .l t . t. dence to show that upon the admission r , til 1 a I Mi in 1 .inr ll iraniali. n . 0 ' f"v l,n;lr,. mn ?f Rny VTly' ot by President Pierce himself, us havim; "ceased to have binding virtue." either as respected tho North or the South. All this, ami much more like it, i given as history, for the purpose of justifying the formal repeal of the Missouri Compromise in the Nebraska bill. It transcends in audacity of misrepresentation the most violent of the harangues by which, during the Ute canvnss, any man of position a d reputation undertook the vindication of that act. The President even goes so far as to say that, without this repeal, Kansas would have been open to slave ry, an assertion which even Alchison -j himself would not receive a. true, and

show that Mr. Pierce was dropped oy ins party beeauso of bis course ffith Kansas, and therefore Mr. Buchanan's success was not an indorsement but a desertion of the Administration. He exposed the "Buchanan and Free Kansas" iwindlo in Pennsylvania, nnd pointed to the defeat of Mr. Richardson for Governor of Illinois as the true popular sentiment there on the Administration. When the North overpower with numbers, and exclude slaveholders from the Presidency, then South Carolina would leave. He endeavored tj show that the Slave States were flourishing; that the devil of Slavery wns not bo black as the North painted him; and he would like to know who wrote an article in The Edinburgh Review exeoriating the slave system of the South. Mr. Rusk, Ark. charged that the Republicans had changed their programme; that tho wounds of bleeding Kansas had been stanched, and now Union saving was the order of the new party. He thonght the Union ought to be preserved only so long as it secured equal privileges to all the members thereof. Mr. Fessendcn, Me. then made a splendid defense of the Republican party. He showed the narrow sectionalism of South Carolina, in voting time and again for her own exolusive candidate for President rather than unite with any national or great party. He assured the Senate that inflexible opposition to the extension of Slavery into Free Territory was, and is, and will bo tho cardinal principle of tne Republican party; and that it would bo fought through to the bitter end, if bitter the end must be Mr. Benjamin. La. got the floor, and moved an adjournment until Monday, which was carried. They are with a ft-w exceptions, the same as during last session. After electing Rev. Hill, a Bnplist minister of Washington, chaptwin, tho Senate resumed debate on n motion to print the President's Message. Bigler entered largely into a defense of the President against the attacks of tho Republicans. In reply to a question of Wade's relativo to Buchanan's polioy, ho said tho people of Kansas must determine tho question of slauery for themselves, but he had bo doubt that Buchanan, like most Northern men, preferred that she be admitted into the Union as a Free Slate. An animated debate sprung up by crowded which was listened to galleries. When Mr. Sherman concluded his remarks tho House adjourned. Party of Action. Tho Republican party to-day is, in m m m I - which, while it was only seedsowing, no Raa so many sluve holders to help him. That this seed should have sprung up abundantly at tbe North, leaving the South still barren, is precisely what nullit have been expected. And that characteristic of the new party which causes (it to be denounced as a sectional party, to wit, that it is not led nnd controlled by slaveholders, is precisely the reason why we may expect that, instead of being, like its predecessor, a mere talking party, it will become a party of action.
