VALLEY FARMER.
From the Southern Cult. CHINESE SUGAR CANE. Its Value as a Sugar, Grain, Forage and PwiMtof Plant. In tho winter of 1855, the junior editor of this journal obtained from Boston a few ounces of seed of this plant, then newly imported from France. It came very highly recommonded as a sugrr producing and forage plant, but haviDg a vivid recollection of many previous disappointments with new-f-mgled "notions," we concluded to test it cautiously, and very modeiately. In order, however, to give it A good trial, we distributed small parcels per mail to friends in various portions of Georgia and the adjoining States, and planted for ourselves only sevon or eight hills, in a poor spot in our garden. At first it came up liko grass or Egyptian Millet, and grew ofl slowly and weakly; but in a few weeks it began to shoot upward, and in three months attained the height of 8 or 10 feet, with largo and well filled heads of seed, somewhat resembling Broom Corn, but covered with a black husk or chaß. Passing by it onco when the seed was near or quite ripe, we concluded to test the sweetness of the stalk, so, cutting a moderate sized cane near the ground, and peeling off its hard outiide coat, wo found a solid pith of three-fourths of an inch in -di ameter, crisp, brittle, and of r ft X bweet and exceedingly plensant fhvor wholly and entirely unlike anything of tho common stalk family that we had ever tasted. It was, in fact, ready made candy. And ns soon as tho younger members of tho family, und the negroes, got tho taste of it, wo were obliged to interdict its further use, in order to i !. When tho latter were fully ripe, wo cut off tho heads and' saved them carefully, noticing, with surprise, that the leaves or blades of fodder were still as fresh, greon and succulent as over. Tho stalks were then out olVuear the ground and fed leaves and all to our milch cows, horses and mules all of which ate it with the greatest apparent relish and avidity. Uonsidenng tho crop disposed of for the season, we paid no more attention to the stubble oi stumps, until wo hap pencd to notice that, millet-like, they wero shooting out anew, and pushing out for a second growth This growth wo wntched with some interest, until the first frost checkod it at which timo tho stalks were six feet high, full, broad and juicy loaves, and with tho second crop of soed just ma making its appearance above the "boot." l ully satisfied by this that it was valuable at least for the orod uction of soiling forage and a dri ed fodder, we noxt turned our at tention to its saccharino proper ties, and fortunntely induced our friend Dr. Uobert Battoy. of Homo, Ga., who was at that timo pursuing tho study of oxperimen tal chemistry in tho well known labratory of Prof. Booth, of Phil 1 I t, A . nueipnia, to test it. as mo re sult of his experiments, Dr. Bat toy sent us three small phials, ono containing a fino syrup, one a sample of crutlo brown sugar, and tho other a fair specimen of crystallized sugar. This wo beliovo to be tho first crystnlized sugar mado in tho United States from Sorcho Sucre; ami M Dr. Battey's opinion of its value as a plant fully agreed with the report of tho French savans who had examined andinvesttgiitct. its properties, and with our own convictions, who this .r tliMcminated it morowiJely and planted nearly two acres, tor the SX ross purpose of raising tho seed, and testing tho ability of tho plant, to bear repeated cuttings, like the Kiryptinn and other varieties of millet. It was planted very late in tho season, on pom" soil, and has received but imperfect culture, and yet, at tho present time,-August 25, a portiou of it has been cut three times, and is growing oft' finely, while the remainder has ripeucd its seed, and will yield a full crop of excellent fodder after the present stalks are cut off at the ground and crushed for syrup, or fed to stock. äomucli lor its introduction into th; 1 1 ton , and its history among us i liir. It is our opinion that, for "soiling," (cutting reon repeatedly.) for tho production of syrup, sugar, cider, or ine, alcohol, fodder, and grain, at the same time, it will be found
iuvaluablo to the South, and thai no plant of recent introduction among us can at all comparo with it.
Prom the Philadelphia. Time. Transplanting Trees. Our good friend, Maj. Frees, of the Oermantown Telegraph," is always giving practical agricultural advice. He now reminds his friends not to overlook tho presentopportunity for planting trees, which can continuo to be done until the frost renders it impracticable. He says it should bo remembered, however, that tho best time in autumn to transplant fruit and ornamental treos (except evergreens) is as soon as tho treo is done growing, which is known by tho decay of the leaves. By putting out thus early the small roots will have a chance to tako hold of the earth and grow bofore the hard winter sets in. Trees for transplanting should be taken up with plenty of root and with as littlo bruising ns pospossible. The small roots should especially be uninjured, as they perform very important functions. In planting, dig the holo largo and deep; crumblo the car: h at tho bottom; spread out the roots carefully; mix well with tho soil a good proportion of compost or manure yard scrapings; make fine and fill with care; press down well, apply about a bucket of wa ter to each treo as tho Idling in coes on, unless after a rain or he soil should bo naturallv very moist. Plant no tree deeper than it stood in the nursery. After plan ing, let tho tree bo nrmlv staked and bound with leather or cloth of some kind to pre vent rubbing and barking, A fork full or two ol stable manure well placed over tho roots will aid much in protecing the treo against severe frost and first winter. And in the spring, say tho first of May, this should be repeated as a mulching to protect tho treo against the heat and drouth. When tho soil is a clayey loam, is low. disposed to bo wet and heavy, spring plan ting is to bo preferred. But whero the soil is dry, porous, partaking of a silicious nature, and not sub ject to undue moisture, early au tumn is generally approved, espe cially for the transplantation of largo trees. Evergreens should never be moved in autumn. If these short and simple practical directions vnro followed (and they should bo preserved for reference) thero will bo no failure. ap a- n im obi ii More Light. Wo aro happy to learn that our fellow-citizen, B. M. Harrison, has at last discovered a process by which he can manufacture a candlo that liir excels tho colebrated Star Candle. Mr. Harrison presented us, a lew days ngo, with a star candle manufactured at Cincinnati, and ono of his, manufactured by him in this city. They are of tho same length and precisely of tho samo weight. Wo placed them in our room, and lighted them at tho samo time. Tho star candle burned six hours and thirty minutes, whilo tho Harrison candle wns eight hours and seven minutes burning, bofore it was consumed. Here was a trial in favor of Mr. Harrison's candle, of one hour and thirty-seven minutes. This is cortainly object worthy of consideration. Horo is an ndvantago of almost one-third tho value of tho star candle. This candlo, as manufactured by Mr. Harison, is almost transparent. It is altogether moro beautiful than tho star, and mnkesavory bright and brilliant light. We congratulate our townsman upon his discovery, and shall tako occasion to refer to this matter again. Trrm Haute ilvprras Sick He.daoht. I have known tho sovorcst sick headacho to bo helped, and tho nervous headacho cured, by somo sympathizing person rubbing their hands from tho top of the Ib id down, and off tho shoulders, after the mesmeric manner.
