We clip the following from the Louisville Journal of last Friday: "The Chinese sugar-cane seed, distributed by the Patent Office last spring, promises to be a complete success at the North. A package of seed was planted in Bucks county, Pennsylvania, latitude 401-2 degrees North, and has arrived at maturity. The maximum height of tho stalk
was ten feet, and the product in
grain much greater than any ce-
realunder cultivation, ihc stalk
is perfectly green after the seed
has reached maturity, and the
saccharine principle is then fully developed. The juice, which is most abundant, is very saccharine, quite as much so as the variety of cane cultivated at the South. Whether the juice contains the same amount of crystallizable sugar remains to be seen. Should it be found equal to ordinary cane in that respect, a new era in the agriculture of the North will be inaugurated, and an

immense Dreaain oi lanu oe aevoted to its culture as soon as the necessary seed can be obtained, which will require another year at least. The seed having been distributed late in the spring, which was cold and backward, there is good reason to believe that much planted did not reach maturity. Should the plant fail, so far as the manufacture of sugar is concerned, yet its value as a forage crop cannot be over esti
mated at the North. Cattle, horses and hogs eat the entire stalk with avidity, and no doubt would fatten rapidly on it. The seed, which is small, has a thin, black hull which can be taken off, leaving a fine, white flour as a residue. We have no means at pres
ent of estimatine the value of
- - u this flour as an article of food, but no doubt its merits will be fully investigated. The culture required for this plant is similar to that adopted for Indian corn when planted in rows, and the seed should be put into the ground about the same time. As it is a quick and strong growing plant, it should be well manured." The high price of sugar, which promises well to go higher and ne
ver to fall, and the apparently chronic failure of the cane crop South, makes a resort to some substitute absolutely necessary, if we are not to see sugar become as it was thirty years ago, a luxury that poor families could only indulge in once a week. Our superb maple forests for a long time supplied the better portion of the sugar consumed in the country, and no inconsiderable part of the town consumption, but the cheaper Southern article gradually
drove it out of use, and the sugar trees were cut down for fire wood, or to make room for the plough. It was a sad blunder, as we now find, but men can'tsee ten ten years ahead. The result may teach the lucky possessors of
good "sugar camps" the value of
keeping them. We can't look to the sugar trees to supply the failure of the cane now. But it seems that we are not to be left
without sugar material in spite of
the destruction of trees and cane. The "sorghum saccharatum," or "Chinese sugar-cane," has lately been introduced into this country, and the few experiments
made upon it with a view to its
utility as a sugar producer, have been astonishingly successful,

slowly until the scum ceases to
rise; then stir in a teaspoonful of
air-slacked lime to five gallons ot
juice; continue skimming and
boiline until the sirup thickens
and hangs down in flakes on the
rim of the dipper. I have made
the clearest sirup bv simply boiling and skimming, without lime
or other clarifiers: but the lime is requisite to neutralize a portion of the acid in the juice. The true proportions must be deter-
mined by well conducted experi
ments.
The cost ol making the sirup
in upper Georgia, in my opinion, will not exceed ten or fifteen cents per gallon. This I shall be able
to test another season by planting and working up fifty acres of the cane.

Health of Cattle. Mix, occasionally, one part ot
salt with four, five or six parts of
wood ashes, give the mixture to different kinds of stock summer and winter. It promotes appetite, and tends to keep them in a healthy condition. It is said to be good against bots in horses, murrain cattle, and also rot in sheep.

Feed all animals rcgulafy.
They not only look for the food
at the usual time, but the stomach indicates the want at the
stated period. Therefore, feed
morning, noon, and evening, as
near the time as possible.
Guard against the wide and in
jurious extremes ot satiating

want. Food should be of suita
ble quality, and proportioned to
the growth of and fattening of
animals, to their production in
young, and milk, and to their labor or exercise. Animals that labor need more food, and that which is far more nutritious, than
those that are idle.
In dry times, see that the animals have a good supply of wat
er. When the fountains are low, they drink the drainings of the
fountains, streams and passages o water, which are unwholesome.
If barns and stables are verv
tight and warm, ventilate them in
mild weather, even in winter. Beech Trees For Hedges.
We have very often recommended the beech tree for hedges in Maine. Our reasons for this were it is a native of our soil will bear pruning, and if pruned right it will become thick and bushy, and be impenetrable to man and beast. It is long-lived, and is not infested with, or attacked by insects. We are glad to find corroboration of our

TO THE PUBLIC. Ehis is to certify that mv wife was afflicted with tbe spinal affection and dyspepsia for nine years, and a large portion of that tlmo confined to her room. Three Joints of hor back bone were thrown out of place and curved, caused by disease and pain. She was quite bowed down in her stature doriag her illness. We bod three physicians attending her during the principal part, of her ill
ness, but she experienced no permanent relief
from their prescriptions. I afterwards procured one bottle of Dr. Forsha's Alterative Balm, and
by tbe time she bad used thatboUlo she felt great relief She ased but seven bottles, when she was entirely cured, sound and well, of her diseases, and her back-bone has lost its curve, aud she is as straight in her stature as she was previous to th attack. We aereby certify that we believe tbe Balm to bo tho cost medicine In use, and we believe It to be a certain euro fot the spinal affection and dyspepsia, and cannot too highly recommend Ilto any person afflicted with theabove diseases. We also find ltan effectual cure in many other di. senses tn which we have tried it in our family. (Signed) ALEX. CLARK. MAKY B. CLARK. Lynabbarg, Highland co., O., Jan. 3, '5. I am well acquainted with Alexin. lea CI ark and his wife, and also John Walter, tod know tbe above statements to be matters or fact, and they aro persons of respectability and candor. Signed A.GIBLERI can recommend Mr. Porsha's Alterative Balm aa being the beat anediclue I ever used for'crsmps and pains. When 1 bad the Cholera, I was cramped very mach, and In leas titan one minute I was relieved of all pains. I have tried it for c uts, bruises, and burns, and found it to give immediate relief. I was taken with a severe pain in the back could uot straighten myself, and I only rubbed it twice, and the pain left me, and 1 was as well aa I ever was. It is good for headaches; my son was attacked with a sev ere headache, and in one-half hourufter bathing his boad, he was relieved. Yours, respectfully, J. W. Amur. Certificate from U.S. Hubble, of the Cincinnati Fuel Co. We had a horse thrown overboard from a Cool Flat, between two boat, and fast in the Rears at the time, and a steamboat passing, which jammed the boat to gether, with tho horse struggling at the time. He was very much eat and bruised. After we rot htm out we applied Mr. Forsha's Alterative Balm freely to the cat and bruises, expecting, however that the hone was rained. Bat after standlag about thirty-six hours, the burse was put to work, as well as ever, except tho scars in consequence of tho cuts he got. And we would cheerfully recommend it to the public as tbe best medicine we have used, and we have tried all Of he different kinds that are in use. I concur with others in recommending Dr. Forsha's Alterative Balm as the best medicine we are ever used for horses, and also for cuts and bjnlses on the human person. Bis S. Hcbblb Certificate from Chas. S. Bryant, Esq. Cincinnati, Jan. II, 'so. During the summer and fall of 1849 t was quite 111 at different tunes, from disease of the disease of tho stomach and bowels. By the first of December, the complainLhad run through the various stages of the diarrhea and dysentery, and dually the pile set in to complete the almost intolerable physical misery to whlch.tUis latter complaint frequently ..objects the sufferer. 1 had been confined to ray bed for abouta week with this last complaint, and was very muco reduced. 1 had applied to a skillful physician, who had prescribed for me several cays, but 1 saw do evident symptoms of recovery. At this point of time, Forsha's Al. terallvoBalra came under my observation. By considerable persuasion, 1 was induced to take II in small doses of a teaspoonful as often as a paroxysms of the disease came on. 1 had taken some three of theoe doses, when 1 felt decidedly bettor and afterwards recovered with such rapidity tbat In two daysaftrr 1 oommenced tak ing the Balm, 1 was entirely free from the effects vf the disease. 1 believe the Halm is an oxcollont remedy for dyspepsia and its kindred complaints, dyarrhea, dysentery and tbe piles. 1 have made this statement at the request of Mr. Porsba, who kindly agsred ose the medicine which 1 believe effected o cure In the above co.
