f III llf -" Y. Tribut. ToriKA, Sept, 9u, '66. Yeeterda I viaited the pri toner of SUM bow under confine jient at Leeornpton. It eras hit second visit to tht forlorn little Virginia town. I es 1 1 it tbm because th. whole sensation i tht of the OKI Dominion. In steed of the rising schooUhoases end eharehes of L-.er.rice. the little street is lined with bar-rooms, whereof the chief is the "Virginia Selooo " The tavern is true Virginia bacon, corn-bread and dirty Beyro boys and girls to wait at table. Southern proineiaiisms strike one's er mi every moment, and the town it garrisoned by Col. Titan's militis. re enforced yesuredsy by twenty -fire precious youths from Georgia, to a high täte of whisky. The Governor declines II control over the prisoners, bat Marshal Don ebon wee eery reedy to admit me to see them. In fact, they were very visible, being allowed an area of a squrre rod or so before their door, gnarded by a few yonng Missonrians. who paced up and down with loaded muskets. I met one of the poor fellows, allowed for some reason to cross the street, pursued by an evil-looking scoundrel with fixed baronet. It is stagnier how much alike all Slavery's officials look. I saw half a dosen times repeated the familiar fea'uree of y Boston friend, Mr. Asa 0. But man. I he hundred and fire prisoners lounged about, looking as prisoners everywhere do. They are kept in a li ge unfinished wooden buiMintr. without aa atom of furniture of my description. They do their own cook' iag, with very scant utensils, and such provisions as I shall hereafter describe. They have obiained with great difficulty fifteen straw pallets for the whole company. Some have no blankets; hut the majority possess the luxury of one apiece. It was an exceedingly eoid windy day when I was there; the exposed si le of the house was unfinishet and about half its superficial extent con in ed of great gape through which the wind whistled. A few of the men lay about on the floor sick with fever and Most of them are young men, the flower of the youth of Lawrence. They are a light hearted set of boys, and are resolved to avenge themselves on their eaptore by perfect indifference to captivity. This comes hard, bowever, ob some, fathers of families and owners of farms which re alike suffering from their absence. Three weeks labor of a hundred men, all lost, in the busiest season of the year, for it it the only time to get in the hay for the Winter's supply. Oae man had left six children, sll sick, and his wife accidentally absent from home; he said he supposed some of the neighbors would look after them ! Another carried in his arsas a child, who was, I was told, the first child born in Lawrence, and was christianed with the name of the town. The poor little thing looked rather forlorn, as its pallid father carried it up and down the bare prison room; ao early initiation into the sorrows of Kansas. Among the crowd I found two of the best emigrants whom Worcester had sent, and others who belonged to companies which I had organised. Not one of the seemed depressed, but all appeared proud of being there. At fist, they said, whih in oaru of the United States troops, and encamped on the prarie. there were many es eapes; now the guard was ao close that it was almost impossible. Col. Titas, who has charge of these, is the bead of one division of Kansas miiitia. his force being chiefly from Missouri and other Southern States; he is the man whose life was humanely spared by the Free-State men when they broke up bis camp of outlaws. He showed his gratitude by informing the Free-Stale prisoners that if one of them attempted to escape, he should Olow the building to atoms. I look ed and saw the cannon actually printed, not upon the entrance, but so as to command the main portion of the building. There stood the emblem of da pntism, with its conical pile of balls beside it. 1 never saw but one canon. bofore, that looked so detestable. Svea now, the men say tha. some eonld eseape by killing n few sentinels; but this they will not do. for a true Kansas reason they would los their rifles ; whereas, if lib rated. Gov. Geary assures them that they shal be restored. I doubt this prospect, howear, from the fact that out of four teen horses, possessed by ditfurent in dmduals of the number when captured, only three can now be found; and a bores) ranks second to a Sharp's rifes in tha aflWion of a Kansas man. All these prisoners are bound over for trial ta October, on the eharie of (order ia the trat degree. You are aware the brilliant series of engage meats in which (he freemen of Kan aa had driven the invadors from their bor dels before Gov. Goare appealed la most of thee a few MUsoariann were killed. In return for this, eveiy Free -State man wbo laaseused by any body of having taken part in those engagements is in danger of uirest. The greater part, however, were taken after the battle at Hickory Point. whiU of the Pro-Slavery men. who till had the black flag flying when these were taken, not one was cantorod. v If eaih of these prisoners had, in broad daylight, deliberately murdered a man, they eould have been placed it ao worse position than lhey( are now, for simple defending t'te liberties of their country under most tearful provocation. For instant:, in the attack on Osawkee, the Free-State men, on entering the Pro-Slavery fort, found a man chained to the floor by a heavy log chain about eight feet long, which was rivised to his leg. In this position he had been kept for six weeks, on the charge of stealing a nors t. In all Ifosj exasperation produced by this etiseove ry. no man was killed; but the Missourians wore compelled t perform tha labor of detaching the chain from Use leg. My ta'ormant saw it done. For this affair, some of those whom I saw at Leoomploo were imprisoned, and others ia this place are biding from arrest or working on their farms, with ahorse ready saddled for instantaneous escape from any suspicious visitors. All these arrest: have been made by the United Oistes troops, whom it is
il foUey 01 the people not
to resist. But this patience cannot last for ever; and I only repeat, what I have every day reserved, when I say that the election of Fremont is the only thing that can avert a bloodier conflict than has ever yet stained this soil. When not a single Pro-Slaveiy man is arrested, how can men help seeing that the Administration is sustaining Missouri ? The Governor excuses himself by saying that the Free-State men make no complaints. But he does not wait for complaints on the other side, and he admitted to me that he sent us to artest the leaders of our train of emigrants without an affidavit from any one. He has been repeatedly informed of tho reason why the Free State men do not make complaints namely, that they repudiate the bogus laws and despise the Judge. But he never will understand it if it is slated m him every day during his stay in Kansas. I think he means to be kind to the prisoners, and he readily consented to order some additional blankets for them and to suggest some improvement in their fare; be also, on being requested, directed the Marshal to close up the chinks in the building above referred to.
('trmpandtneor the .Missouri Democrat." Election in Kaneai . Lawrxncb, Oct. 8. The polls were duly opened in this town yesterday morning by "Sheriff" Jones in person. Seven votes were cast, all for Whitetield, Delegate to Congress, and for tbe regular ticket; three of the votes being cast by officers of the election. Jones took the responsibility to reeduee the price from one dollar to fifty cents, receiving thereby three dollars and fifty cents, the expense of opening the polls being four dollars. Last year at tie 30th of March Territori.il election, over seven hun dred votes were oast in this town. showing a foiling off "very numerous." At Lecompton four hundred and 6fty-seven votes were cast, all for the regular ticket, two hundred and fifty at lewt being residents of Missouti, who will immediately return to that State. Although there has been noroneerted action, the large majority of the people throughout the Territory probably took do part in the election of yesterday. At the 3Jth of March, 1855, elec tion, for members ot the Territorial General Assembly, in Lawrence, 1,034 votes were cast; highest for one candidate 783 roles, of which 7UO were non-residents. At the election of State officers and members of the Bute General Assembly, held on the 15th of December. 1865, 433 votes were cast all resiJents highest for one candidate, 396 votes. At the election for members of Ter ritorial General Assembly, October. 1866, seven votes were cast. Will Hen net read us the "signs of the times in Kansas, frm this datar H. Miles Moore, Eq., of Leavenworth, was arrested last week by some ruffians at Kansas City, and aotvlod to Wyandot, as you have doubtless learned ere this. The persons engaged in and abet ting the taking of Mr. Moor, were employees iu the Lind Office and other Government offices, among whom were General John Ctlhoun, Survey or General of the Torritory; General Ü. W. Clark, Indiana Agent; Colonel Clarkson. and officer in Woodson's Ktnsa Milita, and Martin, Cap tain ol the Kick a poo Rangers. The chief clerk of the Land Office. II. L. Beam has been removed for having Free State proclivities. This removal with that of Mr. Shoemaker, removed for a similar offense, completing the utter worthlessness of this department in Kansas. The succes sor of Mr. hhoemaker is a Mr. Krindle, an officer in the mob at Leaven worth. The Governor ordered all the grog shops in Lecompton to remnin thui during the election ; the consequence was a day of comparative quit t. In haste, yours, U. Ö. r. MKW c VALUiBLE I W BOOK. II. W.
