THE VAUEY FARMER DEVOTED TO TBE TRUE INTEREST OF FARMERS, MECHANICS, ABD WORKING MEN.

Marder of Rev. Cht rice H. Keliey, Late of Indiana. The following letter fron Iter. H. Shumate, to Rev. J met Havens, published ia the Rushville Republican, g'ves the detail of the murder of one of our moat cherished friend. We knew Mr. Kelly well we know Mr. 8bumate. We had received some account of the transaction before, but had not heard of his death. It may do to aay that preachers should have nothing to say about slavery when it thus takes them from the pulpit to the

grave: Indianapolis, Ind Aug 22, 18ÖG Rv. JlM. Uave53 Dear Bro ther: The object of this letter is to give you the facts in relation to the melancholy ileath of the Rev. Charles H. Kelly, of the Missouri Conference, with whom you had a familiar acquaintance. As Brother Kelly received hU first license to preach from you, I supposed you would feel great interest in knowing the full particulars of the case. In 1853, Brother Kelly was appointed to the Lagrange circuit, which is near tho Iowa line, and in the North East corner of the State. Sometime during the fall or winter of that year, a convict by the name of Kelly ecped from the Iowa State Prison, and ws advertised by the Warden in nil the pnpers throughout Iowa and northern Missouri. This advertisement happened to fall under the notice of a certain Dr. Trabue who lived in Missouri, nud who knew Brother Keliey to bo a Methodist miuister, but he being a vile enemy to the M. El Church "North," (as our ohurch is called in that latitude,) conceived the despicable purpose of arresting Brother Kolley as the aforesaid convict, and thereby disgrace a Methodist Minister. Although this escaped convict as described by the warden iu his advertise ment bore no rosemMunce to Brother Kellev, and had no mid dle nace corresponding with our Brother s name-hU beiug Charles, and the preacher's Doing Charles Jl.. vet this lrabuo raised a w alaverv posse of men who were 9 a armed to the tooth, and pursued Brother Kelly to the place where he was holding Ins quarterly meeting, and there took him prisoner betöre tho eyes of all the congregation. No one offered to interfere in the case except the Ilev. J. H. Dennis, Presiding Elder of the District. He ventured to demand the authority of Trabuai and his company for takings min ister out of the palpit, and was answered by having the mouth of a revolver pointed at his breast by Trabue, who told him that there was his authority, and to shut his mouth, or he would blow him to hell! By this time they had the prisoner down on the floor, and the affrighted congregation had fled, and he was alooe save his elder, who is a brave man. He stayed by him at the risk of his own life: They tied Brother Kelly's arms back, and sat him on a rough going horse and chained his feet together under the animal, and started for Fort Madison, the seat of tho Iowa State Prison. A Northwest wind was blowing at the time with all its fury, drivthe the hoar frost into face of our prisoner, whom they hurried otf without giving him timo to put on his overcoat, gloves or leggings. Brother Dennis, however, like a true man, as he is, as soon as he could get ready, took Brother Kelly overclothes and pursued them until midnight Coming up wUh them be demanded then to stop long enough for him to put on his gloves, coat and leggings. Brother Dennis says that when he overtook them, he found Brother Keliey nearly ready to sink under the fatigue and the extreme cold, from which he had suffered greatly in hid hag-dad condilion. The water from his eyes bid frozen upon his cheeks and his hands were clenched around the bridle reins, and so near frozen that it required rubbing to break his grasp; and when he was taken Irora his horse he was not able to stand on his feet for some minutes! Alter our heroic l & had got Brother Kelly's overclothes on, awl gave him a few words ol encouragement, wmiilng him that he would notfors.ikj hi d in this his hour of trial, they placed the prisoner on the horse agiin, and resumed their mrch for Fort Madison. Onward moves the patriotic band of ruffians with a minisw.T in chains; the reward which they expect to gain urges them on with renewed vigor, until our prisoner sinks under the seventy of ihe cold and fatigue! When they found hecouldride no longer on hoisedack, they procured a two-horse wagon and put him in that, ti t hunoN and feet, and still taster urged their way to the goal that was .efore them. Brother Dcnui.- arrived in Fort Madison a few hours before them, aod had mudo urraugements for

having them arrested on their arrival. When they arrived at the hotel with the prisoner, he warden was immediately sent for, who, as soon as he saw Brother Keliey, said "You have the wrong man, gentlemen! I have no claims against him." The ministerial prisoner was now released, and tho band of ruffians were immediately arrested and taken before a magistrate, who decided that, as the offence whs committed in Missouri, he had no jurisdiction in the case. So the offenders, nay, the murderers, were likewise dismissed, and are yet running at large unpunished! Brothers Dennis and Kelly remained at the hotel in Fort Madison a short time, and then start

ed for Lagrange, Mo., the place where Brother Kclley's family re sided, lie was scarcely able to travel, but the thought of a heart broken wife at home urged him to try to reach there, which he succeeded in doing, but only to tell the heart rending story ol tho wrongs received at the hands of his merciless persecutors, and then exchange his sorrows for a martyr's crown! He was never able to go to his field of labor, but was verv soon confined to his BJ hod lingered a few days, and then "CMMd at oaee U work sad llvel" Brother Kolley left a deeply afflicted wife, and one or two children to mourn his lose, besides many brethron in the sorely per secuted M. E. Church in Missouri, and uud I doubt not but that many hearts in Indiana will be deeply painod at hearing of the shameful manner in which one so beloved was torn from tho bosom of his family, and irora a life of useful labor in theohurcliof God The body of our beloved Kolly was decently buried ia the city of Q iincy, IlL, where it will sleep until the resurrection morn, uusi where it will rise in full view of Missouri, the bloody battle tlcld, where it fell iu glorious war! Thus, father Havens, died one of your sons iu the Uoepoi, and thus you see there is one commissioned by you under Ood to he an ambassador of Jesus Christ, whose soul lies under the altar with the eouls of all tho martyrs, crying, "How long, 0 Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judgs and avenge our blood on them that dwell on tho earth?" But I will lenve you to your own sad relWHons over this sad affair, You are at liberty to use this letter as you mny choose the contents are substantially true, and for further evidence in the matter I would respectfully refer you to Bishop Morris and Rev. J. II. Dennis. Very truly yours, Nat. Öhümate. The Crime Against Kansas Another Preeioas Document. In January last. Gov. Shannon wrote a letter to one George W. Clark, which is most convincing evidence of the treachery in high places against the freedom of Kansas. The letter has recently come to light Here it is. Read it: EiaCCTiva Ornci. Jn. 4, '68) Shawnee Mission. f Mt Dear Sir.- Your two last favors are received, and I regret exceeding y to hear of your un pleasant situation. I hope things will grow better. The evidence you speak of must satisfy every one that you did not kill Barber. This difficulty out ol trie way, I hope you will have nothing to fear. 1 think that all organiza tion, to t ike the law into the hands o( self-constituted judges or conservators of the peace, will only lead to bad consequences. The other party will do the same by the way of retaliation, and no one will know when he is safe. 1 am glad to learn that you discourage all such movements as this. I will leave in the morning for Washington City, stopping some days at home on my way. 1 shall urge on the President the policy of stationing a company of U. o. troops at liecompton, or in such other place in that region as you may think best. 1 shall urge upon him the policy of quietly stationing ft company at Topeka about the middle ot February next. The Free State Government, you know, is to be inaugurated on the 4th of March next, and the Legislature at that time will convene its session. The President has the power to station the troops it any place he sees proper, and there will be no uecessity of his saying for what purpose he station? a company at Topeka. It will be looked upon by che Freo State men as a significant sign, and may induce them to pause iu their mad career of folly ond treason. I would be glad if you would write to your friends in Congress get them to back me up in what I may Beek to accomplish lor the Territory. Moreover. I desire to I see and talk with the lending
