Pursuant to ailjouniment, large and respectable meeting ol the citizens of Clarke county, Virgioia, was held at the Court House on Saturday, July 26th, 1856, to take action in regard to John C. Underwood's course io the recent "Republican Convention" at the city ol Philadelphia. On motion of Dr. Cyrus McCormick, Dr. 0. R. Fugten was called to the chair, and John D. Richardson, and John Morgan appointed Secretaries. On motion the number of the Committeeon Resolulionsappointed at the meeting held on the 12th instM was raised to sixteen, and the following persons apointed said Committee, vii: Province
McCormick, Thomas F. Nelson,
Oeorge W. Bradfield, Ed. W. Mas-
sie,Dr John F: raunt leroy, üuckner Ashby. Charles E. Kimball, David H. McGuire, Thomas McCormick. Wm Taylor, John N. Collier, Henson Elliott, Col. Tredwell Smith, and E. L. M.intor. After a brief consultation, the Committee, through Province McCormick, Esq, their Chairman, made the following report: The Committee respectfully submit the following statement and resolutions: 'ThutJohnC. Underwood, late of the county of Clarke, did enter into and procure himself to be recorded at the Convention recently held in Philadelphia, called the 'Republican Convention.' as n 'Delegate from the State of Virginia,' and that in so doing and acting he was guilty of an atrocious fraud, not having the
authority or sanction of a single invidualauvwhere, so far as we
can ascertain, after diligout inqui
ry certainly none from a citi
zen of Clarke to attend the
Convention in any capacity.
"Had be sanj and done, on the .soil of Virginia, what he
is thus reported to have said and done, surrounded by the circum
stances preceding and attending
that Convention, the Committee are advised that he would have earned and richly merited the felon's reward. "Little is known of the early history of this miscreant. He was born and bred in the Statt of New York: emigrated, some few years ago, to Virginia, and tau't school in a private family. After an absence of a year or two, probably, from his native State, it is said he returned to it, but agnin came back to Virginia, married into the family where he ta j;ht, and settled there tempo
rarily. "Some
were unanimously adopted by the meeting. On motion it was ordered that the proceedings be signed by the Chairman and Secretaries, and published in the papers of the Congressional District and Richmond. On motion, the meeting adjourned. Another Shriek for Slavery
Louisiana, DISSOLUTION OP THE UNION INEVITABLE, una mom saAToi sltdell.
five or six years ago,
leing tlien a resident of Herkimer, New York, he purchased a
farm in the County of Clarke, lying in the Blue Ridge Mountain a spot well suited, from its secluded position, for the purposes of the conspirator. It is known that (since he settled in Clarke.) be has been in correspondence with one or more of the Abolition prints of the North, and has been suspected, with much reason, of other disreputable practices. Judging the man by his antecedents his conduct in going to and attending the Convention referred to, the company which he isfoundin, the complexion of that company, or some of them it it is the opinion of the Committee that he should not be permitted
to return to the Commonwealth of
Virginia to resulc. lie stands cuiltv of moral treason, at
w w w least, if not Irgai treason, against the Commonwealth; and is, beyond all doubt, dangerous to thr peace i the good order and well being of her civil socie"Be it therefore resolved: -1. That the institution of slavery as it exists in Virgioia, is entirely in accordance with the feelings of our citizens; that we have no respect for the sick ly, morbid sentiments, which holds slavery to be a 'moral evil,' or for the anti-slavery piopagators of such sentiments, and it is high time fur Virgioia to discountenance all teachers whether in our pulpits, our school-houses, or elsewhere. '2. That the citizens of the countv of Clarke cannot and will not longer tolerate the presence of John C. Underwood amonp them as a citizen or resident; and that if he v are return to re-ide, we will take steps to eject him, p aceahltj if we can, forcichj if we must. '3. That, inasmuch as the whereabouts of said Underwood is not known, and personal service cannot be made upon him. the proceedings of this meeting be published in one or more newspaper having the most extensive circulation in the North, whither it is supposed he has gone." The said repoit and resolutions
Senator Slidell has addressed a long letter to the Louisiana central Committee, which closes as follows:
"But while thus confident of
the success of our ticket, we should not shrink from contemplating the possible contingency
of the election of Fremont, and
should prepare ourselves for such a result. No one can value more
highly than 1 do the innumera
ble advantages and blessing of
the Union; but it must be Union
under the constitution the Uni
on of Slates, equally sovereign,
with equal participation in every
right and privilege.
"It is but within tho last two
t . a
years that l nave permitted my
self to think of the possibility of
its dissolution; und.untu the nom
imition of Fremont, I have look
ed at it but in the distant future
Now it presents itself as a ques
tion which we may be called up on to decide, in all its dread reali
ty, in a few short months. Sho'd
rremont be elected, I snail besa
tisfied that a majority of the peo
ple of the free StaUs entertain
towards us feelings that render
BjfJ the idea of living with them on
terms of equality, hope ew.
"The issues presented by his
nomination; the antecedent ol
thM:'H who brought him forward
the opinions and purposes avowee
by evcrv fpenker at every meet
ing of bis party, are such that no
Southern man should dare to in
cur the infamy and odium of ac
cept ig office under him. The
whole maohine of government on the Southern States must be stopped, unices Northern men can be found bold enough to come among us and undertake the collection of the revenue, and the execution of the laws ol a government from which we shall be practically exeluded. "Each aggression on our rights, if submitted to, will lead to new and more aggravated attacks, and we shall, after a protracted struggle, at last be obliged to choose
w between the alternatives of unqualified vassalnge or separation. But in such a struggle, not only will the proud spirit that now animates us have been impaired,
but we will have lost allies that an earlier, open resistance would have rallied to our support. I do not hesitate to declare that if Fremont be elected, the Union cannot and ought not to be preserved. "What particular course sho'd be pursued, I am not now prepared to sa y. In so fearful a contin
gency, I should bo unwilling to
act without some definite manifestation of the will of my State. This can only be given through the legislature, or, if time allowed, by a convetion of the people,
called by the legislature. Whatever be the mandate of Louisiana, I shall be prepared to carry it out in letter and in spirit "John Sl dell. John S. Holt, Esq.,

ment of this Disunion movement as an electioneering document for use in the campaign, in the belief that as soon as it became known at the North, the "conservative classes" there would rush to the support of Mr. Buchanan,
and thus remove the danger of
the contingency in which the
South would destrov the Conderacy. But the sounder advice of the Northern members of the
Committee prevailed, who gave it as their opinion that such a proceeding would arouse a feeling ol
indignation against the whole par-
y, and promote the interests of
Fremont
In regard to this movemeut, it
is the opinion of my informant that it can be checked only for a
time, and that should the North not yield in time to the menace
of Disunion, the proposed Con
vention will be held, and no man
can foretell the consequences that
may result from an assemblage of
that character But this gentleman and the conspirators now dis
gracing the Executivo chairs of
the South, have failed to take into account the slaveholders them
selves, that powerful class which
now rules the South. '1 hey can
not a (Turd to allow the Union to
be disolved; they dare not alio it; and the moment these reckless and treasonable intriguers devel
op their plans to enable these ru
lers of the South to reach them,
the Disunion politicians will be
precipitated into tho dust. That
is the security of the Union a
gainst Southern Traitors. The tears of the Have-holders are the bee'w guarantee of the Union iu
that quarter.
The fanatical Disunionists of
the South have put forward
reckless Buchanan majority in the
Texas Legislature to initiate this last Disunion project by the ovort act of passing a resolution in one
branch, which will, doubtless, be
concurred in by the other, sum
moning the tho Convention which
is to organize secession.

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HATCHING TREASON.
CorraBpondenee af B. Y. Court' and Enquirer. Washington, Sept. 11. I am informed upon the highest Democratic authority, that several of the Democratic Governors of Southern States are engaged in an active and grave correspondence with one another and with leading Southern politicians, the object of which is to agree upon a call for a general convention of all the Southern States, dependent upon the event of Fremont's elelection This is simply a plot of Disunion and Treason, and has been suggested by the doctrines of the Cincinnati Convention and the incendiarv speeches of Mr. Fillmore at Albany and elsewhere, recommending secession to the South in case the North should reject both the sectional pro-slavery candidates.
