Ae surely as tbe sun thinet. the country ie in danger. I have a high respect for Mr. Fillmore, and if he atood precisely where he did in 1 880 I should prefer him to nny ataa for the Presidency. Even ae it hi, personally 1 prefer him to either of Um Other candidate. But. fellow ei linens, them ia no living man whom I love to well ne I do that great union of States my country for whieh my father gave hie life. Mr. Fillmore has given ue good advice advice which accords with my own judgment; he telle ne that the Union is in erominent danger: he leade na to belvwe that the
probabilities are that if Mr. Fremont
ts elected, the Union will be dissolved: and not into two parts, but shivered
into fragments! Old-line Whigs, what it our duty? It lies with us to save the Union. The candidate of tbe
Black Republic an p'ty must be de fee ted. else, as Mr. Fill more tells us
ee we have been fold bv the areata t
statesmen since 1 820 the Union is in dire and imminent peril. For me, 1 am for tbe preservation of the Union. Destroy all tbe parliee now in existence, but for Goo's sake for tbe sake of bumaa liberty taw the Union. I have no faith in the sincerity of that noa who, with hit mouth full of protestations of love for his country, and for the memory of my dead father, eaanot lay bit personal prejudice and predilections upon the altar a willing euttifite for the salvation of hit country. How am we to defeat Fremont? We ennnot elect both hie opponent. Neither of them neither Mr. Fillmore nor Mr. B achaean is presented for
the suffrage of Old-line Whigs upon a pure Whig platform. Them ere principlee avowed and maintained by both the parties of which they am rep-
reaeatauvea, which we do not approve. It is ueceMarj for ue to choose between them, which evet ia most likely to de feat the Black H publican candidate; aad in making the choice it is not nec-
etsary for us to indorse or to give la our adhesion to the principles which either represent. I believe that the
Union would be safe with ruber, and
it is our du'y to save the Union if we
ean. The question tor us is resolved
into a mem question of chance, which is tbe most likely to succeed Recording
to ur boat hunt, Mr. rillmore or Mr.
Buchanan?
Fellow-cilieene, I have made my
choice. Looking over the whole country, not confining my view to my
own State, or to my own locality not suffering myself to be influenced by partisan journals or by partisan
orators I am deliberately convinced that Mr. Fillmore has not the least chance of aaeoeee, and thai if it be at all possible to defeat Fremont, tbe
Democratic party, with their candi
dates Buchanan and Breckinridge, with
the aid of the U ion-loving Old-line Whigs, is the only party which has the least chance to do so Show me a State certain or nearly certain for Fillmore, and I will show yoa two for Buchanan. 1 hohl in my band authentic results of the last elections, from which alone we can form reliable eon-
elusions. From these it appears that,
while twelve of the Southern States are almost certain for Buchanan, Mr. Fillmore has, at the best, but a doubt-
fa I chance for the remaining three.
Thus, Mr. Buchanan presents himself
with almost the whole South in solid tk m Si
phalanx. At tbe IXorlh ins count m
to the full aa good, and in my opinion
much better, iban Mr. rillmore t; be
sides, we Whigs know well, and to our cost, the wonderful tenacity of the
Democratic perty how it has held
together and had success when we
moot confidently expected its defeat.

the Whitfs of Kentucky were able,

man whom they loved, and who loved

the honor of Kentucky, that whenever Kentucky's nsme was mentioned, at
home or abroad, his name at onoe arose before the mind's eye, and whenever bit name wat mentioned Kentucky appeared. Fellow -whigs.
do you love Mr. b illmore so much bet
tor than you did Henry Clay that you
cannot make the same sacrifice of your
predilections for the one that you did
for the other upon mach lest occasion?
Ilm. fellow -ciiisens, I am often
asked how it is posibie that t, my
father's son. oan reconcile it to myself
to vote for Mr. Buchanan, who, they
tay, had to seriously injured and wronged my father by originating, or.
if not originating, by being complies
ted with and mixed up in some way or other with that vile old charge of bar
gain aad intrigue betwixt htm and
Mr Adams. In nine cases out of ten ihc peisons who in my presence refer to that affair, know abitolutely nothing
about it, and when I row them to aa
thentic record they are too much prejudiced, and love to be prejudiced
too well to allow them to make th
most ordinary examination. I have folly and carefully studied tbe whole history of the bargain and intrigue
slander, with the express purpose of
ascertaining the truth or the falsity o
tbe charges against Mr. Buchanan
and the result of my research has been
that aa an honest man 1 am bound to
acquit him of having had any part in
the original tiandcr, or of having done
my lather any wrong, when be was
summoned before the public as a wit
nest against him. I am bound to ao
quit him upon the testimony of the
very person to whom he is said to have wronged and tlandtred, and however
little partisan editors and partisan or
alort may'eaieem tin- evidence of my
father himself, it is abundantly suffl
cient for me, his son. The charge of
bargain and intrigue waa first made
by Mr. Klemer, in an anonymous let
toff, subsequently reiterated by Carter
Beverly, in his celtbraied Fayettrville
letter, and finally amiert. d bv Oenern

summoned Mr. Burhannn before tb
public aa hit only witness. Mr. Bastianen promptly responded to the call for bis testimony. D'd he sustain Mr. Kretner, Carter Beverly and Gen eral Jackson, tbe last of whom bad summoned him? On the contrary, his evidence was clear and distinct, and fully exculpated Mr. Clay from the charges made against him. So
Mr. Clay regarded it himself, and he, the person a caused, testified, publicly
and privately, taat be considered Mr Boehaaan bad done him no wrong. I read to you from Cotton's Private Correspondence of my father, hie private letter lJ his old friend, Judge Brooke,
of Virginia the friend of his life-time
a letter never intended for publication, dated August, 1827, in whieh. referring to Mr. Buchanan's Lancaster letter, he says: "I could not desire a stionger statement." Again in public, upon the occasion of a dinner given him in Washington on his retirement from the office of Secretary of State, he, said: "That citisen ( General Jackson) has done me great injustice. It was inflicted, aa 1 must ever believe, for the double purpose of gratifying private resentment and promoting pe rsonal ambition. When, during the lale canvass, be came forward in the public prints, under his proper name, with bis charge against me, and summoned before the public tribonal his trivnd and only witness (Mr. Buchanan) to establish it, tbe anxious attention of tbe whole American people was
directed to the testimony which that
witness might render. He promptly
obeyed the call, and testified to wliit
be knew. He could say nothing, and
he said nothing which cast the slight
est shade upon my honor or integrity
What ho did say wss the reverse of
any implication of me." i hus, fellow citizen, we hav iht private and public opinion of xy father reaiieating the testimony of Mr
Buchanan upon tbe charge of bargain
and intrigue. I know that my father
would not have expressed such opin
ions, unlets he believed them to be
true. He was satisfied with Mr. Buch
anan, and so expressed himself private-

who are now endeavoring to strike
down their political opponent with
