We art indebted to a friend for a copy of t biter from a lady fco formerly resided within a few of this city. It is deeply end pictures in tou ted eloquent terms the deeooditioD of affairs in The letter was not writend is all the i a true end unBtmti? e fiom t highly lady who has not the It Uea that her letter would iKeed by say xoeyt her particoku lHtnde. We give it entire, aalt eaaae from her own pen: LawaaacB, May 24. Itr Dta Mas. I have kg completed a letter to my boo and friends, and though voir tired, I will take op the thread eft- s letter where he lea it. Wt lam been so long constantly noted and had so Tittle rest night or day, and had to work so hard tad under so many inconveaaentee, that we are ail used up. We, have been obliged to move ftean oar tent into oar cabin beta the floors were laid, or logs eMakad up, as our trunks and thiagt were liable to be pillaged, at any time, while standing out of doors by the tent; every thing it greatly injured by the spring asm Wt had plenty of wet eeela, shower baths, sod douches, vbUaitt the tout, and if we bad not been so much accustomed to tkaa kind of treatment we could not hare survived the exposure. Tbo strong, bard winds, so disagreeable to me through April, are now balmv breezes, very weleasae and r reshing these hot days we are experiencing. B hat been obliged to stop working em the boose, to go off and buy tor plowing, etc.; he got a team of a Missounan for I, a noble yoke of oxen for $125, and three cows for another 100; but we bare been daily expecting all of them to be stolen from us, and bare bidden them many a night away off down in a ravine. The "law and order men," encamped so near us, have killed and eaten up poor men'e calves and cattle, milked their oops, and rode of all the horses they eould get bold of. They have arrested and taken prisonaft several of our neighbors as spies, who were near their camp, boating lor lost cows or oxen, aad have stopped and searched aery one passing on this road for the past two weeks. They stationed guards at intervals, and it any man refused to stop, they instantly pounced upon him, took roeaeesion of all the money, arms or valuables the found upon hiin. We have not yet cut our window or front door places, in our cabin, have fortified it as well as we eould for the present, leaving two port-holes to look out of, and boot out of, if assaulted; and the first few days, we climed in an elevated opening, drew in the laider, and nailed it up of nights. We did not fear any personal to ourselves unless they intoxicated, as some of them all the time They were in and about our cabin at all hours of the day, and I saw a great many of different grades from Geor gia, South Carolina, Alabama and Missouri. They were all oourteous to mo, and offered their protection to ua, as new comers, who had not identified ourselves with any of the past difficulties in the Territory. I crushed down my indignant spirit, and fore bore testing them at first how I scornad them and their protection. I usually proceed to get what nformation 1 could of their aims, purposes and prospects, and then triad to frighten them about staying in the Territory, with stories of rattlesnakes, prairie-wolves, fever and ague, cold winters, &o, tiffing them how hard it would w- r - - - tu., u I ww lur uugruea w itinvu nerc. what an unprofitable thing it must be for masters to own slaves in snob a place. They admitted it was for their interest, and their intention, to use up land in about (box years, and keep emigrating to now soil I inquired, with npe sympathy, bow all the poor got along in the camp. One of the officers told me that of them never had so cornhome before having been picked up by those benevolent gentlemen who had sent taatl oat and had their oxpenses perl here, and provisions provided for one year, necessary to present a claim, Ac.; all are required to take a solemn oath to support slavery iu tho Territory, tod to fight for Southern interests bore. Sometimes would come from his work to the tent when these men were stopping there, and they would tell him "he must excuse them for stopping, fur it was such a rare treat to see unit talk with a lady once more '1 1 le knew them to be spies J the time, and always when questioned of our sentiments, told them we were radical Free State, and in tended to maintain our opinions at any cost. The first night after we moved into our cabin, a drunken posse came and demanded us to come out and show them the way to Wcstport and several other places. We gave them dircctin and told them we had retired and did not like to disturb the children; tbey went round and round the cabin to find the door, cursing and threatening, and finally went off and got a reinforcement, then inqnired the way to the Pro-Slavery camp, which they had just left, saying they had power to bring us out, and if we did not come, by h 11 they would make us do so. E flatly refused to stir, nn J stood with revolver iu hand, ready to shoot the first one who attempted to force a passage in; alter exhausting themselves in oaths, kicks and imprecations, they left, swearing they would bring others still to make E come out, but -.hey did not Hgniu return Last Sabbath the constant firiug and fiendish yells disturbed me so, that I got the children aslcep, and while E had gone

They replied that tbey had orders to go where they chose, and do what they chose, and fire where and when they chose, and said tbey were here by President Tierce's authority, acting under his directions to Gov. Shannon, and showed mo their United States badges and arms. I told them very calmly but with blood inwardly boiling with indignation that some of their officers had voluntarily assured me we should not be annoyed, and that I should report this outrage and the assault by the drunken party a few evenings previous, in person or by letter, to their commander. They turned pale with rnge and excitemnent at having one dare complain of their acts, and said, fiercely, "Come along, oome along! wo'll escort you." 1 replied, "I do not wish your escort, and will not trust a note to your If rtnt m . a care. Lney stoou around the door some moments, looking likej hyenas ready to pounce upon me, but finally withdicw. On the day of tho attack upon Lawrence, when riding by the encampment on a bluO oveilmking tho town a fierce South Carolinian, armed with musket, bayonet, bolt stuck full of bowie-knives und revolvers. rode up with his party, and hailed us as spies from Lawrence. E told him where we lived, and that wo had just started to go to town, but had been intercepted by their proceedings and directions. Again he said, '-You have beeu to Lawrence to-day." E refloated the assertion. Again the Carolinian said insolently, "I am sure I havo seen you pass out ol Lawrence to-day!" E then replied, "1 am no liar, and will not hear that repeated Hgain, aller my assurance to you; and h tmid it in a determined nnd delving muriner, which I toured might provoke the scamp nnd party to violences but ii neemeti to abate their brnviido, though they went on aweuring they would bring ou hundred of slaves to Kansas in the fuoe of heavon or hell, und keep them here, too, whether Kree Stato or 81hvo SUto.
