PabUe oa the Attack Upon,' Cel. Ia trseb a erisit m this, when the liberty of tpeeeh tad freedooi al ire tttdsogersd, wa atk no f oar readers for dovotiog an aaoaat of ipso to the tubjset. We t;ive below the opinion of all partita is far si we ceo gather Dj tbo news from Washington, it wkW be nets that Senator Sumiter hta been sarageiy and brutally lanltH while sitting in bis tat in too Senate chamber, by the Hoc. Mr. Brooks, of South Caiittsa, toe reason assigned tbafMlPr being the Senator's remarks on Mr. Butler, of South Carolina, who is uncle to the man who made the attack. The particulars show that Mr. Sumner waa struck unawares over the bead by a loaded cane and stunned, and then the ruffianly attack was continued with many blows, the Hon. Mr. Keitt, of South Carolina, keeping any of those around, who might be so disposed, from attempting a rescue. No display of Southern cowinarallv miscalled Qmtlmu chivalry was ever : It is not in the least a cause for wonder that a member of the national House of Representatives, assisted by another as fender-off, should attack a member of the national Senate, in a constitutional argu te the last had uttered words wbtTh the first chose to consider distasteful, The reasons for the absence of collision between the North and South collision of sentiment and person, which a few years back, have and as the South has ta kes the oligarchic ground that Slavery ought to exist, irrespectire of color that there must be a governing class and a class governed that Democracy is u delusion and a lie we must ex neet that Northern men in Wash-1 . it i. lQftoo, wneiner memucrs ur uuu will be assaulted, wounded or killed, as the case may be, so long aa the North will bear it The sjssj of violence during this session) including one murder are simply the overtures to the drama of wmoh the persecutions, murders, robberies and war upon the Free State men in Kansas, constitute the first act. We are either to have Liberty or Slavery. Failing to silence the North by threats, notwithstanding thu dongbfaced creatures who so big misrepresented the spirit of the Republic and ot the age, the Sooth now resorts to actual violence. It m reduced to a question whether there is to he any more freedom of speech scuth of Mason and Dixon's line, even in the tea miles square of the District of Columbia, South of that, liberty has long since departed; bat whether the common ground where the national lepreeestatives meet ia to be turned into a slave plantation where Northern members are to act under the lash, the bowie-knilu and the pistol, is a question to bo settled. That Congress will take any action in view of this new event, we shall not be rash enough to surmise; but if tho Northern people are not the poltroons they are taken for by the hostile slavehieeiluin and slavedrivert of the Sooth, they wilt be heard from. As a beginning, they should express their sentiments upon this brutal snd dastardly outrage in their popular assemblies, The Pulpit should not remain silent. If, Meed, we go on quietly to submit to such outrages, we deserve to have our noses flattened, our skins blacked, and to be placed under task-masters; for we have lost the noblest sttributesol freemen, and are virtually slave ifwss York Tribune. The Journal aaya. Mr. Sumner, for his incendiary harangues, may really deserve a ir punishment than ho has or is likely to receive in this world, but we think that the House of Representatives, for the sake of its own dignity and the honor and harmony of the Republic, should expel Mr. Brooks far using s bludgeon upon a Sentier for words spoken in debate. If swob is to be the character of tfc collisions in the Halls ol Con greae, the people of the North aid the people of the Sooth will soon learn to conform their actions to the condition of things. 7 hey will send to the Senate and House ox Representatives recti capable of breaking shulls and Bosse rather than own of inteilecWm m. ner snd that, too, without takmg a a simiixr disadvantage. It seems that brooks attacked Sumner because the latter had in debate abused South Carolina nud Mr. Brooks' rather aged relative, Senator Butler. Tho idea of using a bludgeon upon a Senator for maktug a speecn against a State is monstrous. A score ol South Carolina members of Congross within the last tew years have used their whole power of vituperation against Massachusetts, und as many Massachusetts members have exercised themselves upon South Carolina. A pitched battle has long boen raging botwecn the champions of thoso two States, and generally the harshest and most offensive language has come from the South Carolinians, who don't like to bo out done iu anything. Wh-it Sumner may have said about Senator Butler, we know not, but wo think that the Senator, who is qjites as fiery-hearted as he is wbite-beaJed, would scorn the thought of letting any younger man take a quarrel with an Abolitionist off his hunds. We happened to be in tho Senate Chambar near tho close of the last ses sion of Congress, dunng ono ot the night discussions of all manner, of slavery questions. Judge Butler, who is really a gentleman of many fino and generous per sonal qualities, had become ex ceedingly elated from trequeut visits to the Senatortal Ilestaurant. Sumner was making a severe speech that evidently had reference to the forcible expuUion of Mr. Hoar, a venerable citizen ol Massachusetts, from the limits of South Carolina, but he did not mention South Carolina's name. Mr. Butler interrupted him by asking in a fierce tone, "Does he mean South Carolina?" Sumner proceeded without noticing the interruption. "I demand," ex claimed Butler, Bhrting again to his feet, "whether he means South Laroliua; for, it ne does, let mm say so, and I will give him something to make him remember me and South Carolina ns long as he lives," Sumner still proceeded quite impurterably, bestowing no attention upou his excited opponent just iu front of him. "Does he mean South Carolina?" ejaculated Butler for the third time. "Yes, 1 efts mean South Carolina!'' thundered Sumner, with more spirit than wo had thought an Abolitionist could possess. Ho finished hisspeech without any further interruption, and Butler rose to reply, but the fine olJ South Carolina gentleman was too far gone to be half equal to the tremendous occas&ion. Wo repeat tho expression of tho hope, that, however obnoxious Sumner mny justly be to tho patriotic portion of tho people ol the United States, the House of Representatives will protlytnp expel Brooks, if the account of his assault upon the Massachusetts Senator shall (trove correct Indeed tho House of Representatives, it seems to us, would be guilty of tho grossest and most shameful dereliction uf duty to to tho Senate if it were to refuse to punish one of its own members fur knookidg down a Senator upon the floor of the Senate for words said in Senatorial debute. Orsat Mass Meeting at Boston Boston, May 26. Tho largest mcoting over held at Fancuil Hall assembled lust evening, to give expression to their inriigimtion at tho aaauult on Senator Sumner. Fivo thousand were iusido tho Hall, and thousands outside unable to gain entraueo. Governor Gardner presided, assisted by forty vice Presidents, including tho most distinguished mon of all parties. The following are the resolutions: Resolved, That we have heurd with grief and indignation of the brutal assault committed upoo our esteemed Senator, Charles Sumner, for words spokon in debate, and tho insult offered, in his person to our commonwealth. Resolved, That in this outrage we see now encroachments upou freedom new violations of Stato rights, nnd a strong disregard of chivalrous principles; while in the conduct of such men as Senator Crittenden wo gladly recognize proofs of tho fact that in all sections of the country there are men of high honor, of pure principles, and of truo patriotism. Resolved, That this attack is to be rebuked, not only as a cowurdiy assault upon a defenceless man, but. as a crime against the right ot free speech, and tho dignity of a freo State. Resolved, That as American citizens, we deeply lament the udiunf which such acts cast upon our country, and upon the cause of freedom thro'out the world. Resolved That although sixty-eight members of tho National House of Representatives have voted that they think no inquiry regarding the outrage is necessary, still we feel confident that Congress will free itsolf from the samo crime by expelling the offender from the seat ho has disgraced. Resolved, That we regard ever)' blow inflicted upon our Senator, as a blow aimed at us; that as citizens of Massachusetts, without distinction of party, we pledge him, in old Fancuil Hall, our sympathy in tho fearlos l and independent dischargo of his duty. The resolutions were passed unanimously, nnd the meeting adjourned at 1 1 o'clock. Many ladies occupied the gallery, and large delegations wore in attendance from the neighboring towns.
