&&ising Corn for FodtUr. Erx 0. Cdlt: Farmers differ as to which Is the best method of raising corn for fodder. I have raised it for four years. I plant it in drills four feet apart one way and two feet the other, from four to seven kernels in n hill. Last year I planted half an acre at first planting, that was ready to eat on the first of August, to give to my milch cows in the evening. I planted another field of three acres, on the 23d of June, on an old meadow, where the grass had run out. When the first field wis gone, this was ready to begin with. The cows will give more and better milk by using tnie feed. Last year, 1 had a field that was in logs, bri.irs, elder, and a little grass. We cleared it off, plowed it, and planted the corn Ott the 1st of July. It was so wet that it was not cultivated, ad was in roasting ears tho last of September. The stalks wore from 8 to 10 feet high. Two years ago I had two acres, one half was old, well run, the other was new ground. I planted oa the 15th of Juno, cultivated it, and hoed it, and had no more than four or five stalks to the hill When it came in tassel, I began to feed from it. I cut out the smallest stalks first, until I cut it all up. I husked 100 bushels of ears from it. Some people think that the shocks should be made small; it it unnecessary. The bands mu t be put up high around the tnaseU,so that the ban da will not interfere with tho ear. When the shocks are large, the fodder keeps bright It will not do to put it in mow or stacks, as it will heat or mould in a short time. E. Pledss. Brace ville, May, 1850. Pruning Trees. We extract the following from a paper read before the Cincinnati Hort. Society. The principal objects of pruning, are to procure a good pole or trunk for timber, to form a be.nJ tolerably open and spreading, (if a standard orchard,) for the protection, and healthy and perfect development of fruit; and subserve in seme measure the purpose of ornament To effect these objects with the least trouble and greatest advantage upon all nonresinous trees, toe following directions are recommended 1. Begin to prune the tree when it is young. 2. Cut close and smooth t : he pole or limb. 3. Cut, wbeti small, the branches which are likely to cross one another, or which are likely to interfere, or to become useless, or dead, and which, ii" allowed toreniaio, will require to be removed at a more advanced period of growth; when very large, they would create too great n shock upon the vital energies of the plant 4. Avoid pruning to excess under our hot sun. Lot the branches occupy at least a third I the entire height of tho tree. 5. Do not trim when the true bleeds. When the preceding suggestions are observed, I may add the following: G. Pruning may bo done at any time when the tree is in a dormant state; but tho best and safest time U when vegetation is at rest, just at the time of the rising of sup. 7. Shortening in, or the extirpation of water sprouts, may be done at all times iu tho summer. For dwarfing and early fruiting, shortening in, or summer pruning, is necessary, but to be done with great delicacies at this season. THE Lint BE A. There are few persons iu the Went who know the luxury of Lima Deans. Those who have never eaten them think they are only beans, nti'l therefore do not consiiler them worth seeking af ter. True, they aro only beans, but they are decidedly uperior to 14 other varieties A dish ol "hot buttered beans" is decidedly nice to the eye of a hungry mau; but no other kind will compare with tbe Lima. HOW TO RAISE TT! CM. Plant in hills, three feet apart, and put three or four heana in a hiii When up, stick in each hill a pole some eight or ten feet Ugh, for them to run on, for they re great viuers as well as very prolific. HOW to cook Turn. Hu 1, boil tender, and season with batter, seit, end pepper.
From ihc Ohio Farmer. TAGGING SHEEP.
The process known in Vermont by the two words placed at the heading of this article, consists as follow?: Previous to the time of turning the sheep from their winter quarters to grass, the flock is taken to the proper place, ami each sheep is bereit of from four to six ounces of wool, grown In the immediate vicinity ot the anus. Tho wool at this time is very clean, and can be sold separate for about hall price, or washed and put into the main fleece at shearing time. The ti.ne occupied with each sheep varies from three to five minutes. In tho new States this process has not in general been adopted, yet we are strongly of the opinion that the motives all incline to its universal adoption everywhere among good flock masters. To allow the wool to remain, ia to furnish the sheep with the direct nget.cies to accumulate a vast quantity of filth and manure, which is exceedingly injurious ti himself ud offspring. No sheep can thrive as well with four quarts of dung; balls, bfioe and filth attached to his body, as when kept clean, dry and wholesome. The lamb will most cortainly do better it the fountain of its food and growth b kept clean and inviting. On the contrary any lamb endowed with the usual share of instinct, would j dread to thrust its innocent and cle m face into close proximity ! with such a heap of corruption, j I have seen many a lamb goj for its meal, and instead of opening its mouth to admit the nasty , dung, on the nipple, turn away in disgust, choosing rather to endure hunger than satisfy its cravings j from a source s foul, so very offensive. Will not farmers who have been in the habit of neglecting this important duty to their flocks make a trial of its merits? "We seriously adviso them to do so. On man can tug loO sheep in a day. The saving of wool will abundantly pay for any one can see, if only four ounces of wool is saved, worth tcr. or twelve cents per pound, it would give as a result of this day's work some $15 or $18. Try it, and you will never fail to repeat it yearly. Aside from mere mercenary considerations, there aro hosts of reasons, all of which equally urge to tho adoption of this .salutary and excellent practice. S. B. Rockwell. Middlebury, Vt, 1866.
