Mt. Caiuiu, Ind.. April 86, 1856. Mr. Editor:---You may think it Strang tbt I who have aiway acted, with ibe Democratic party, should ad draaa a communication to your paper in preference to the Democrmt, bat it it from a fait conviction that, did I do o, it would not t admitted. Ia this matter I hope I may be mistaken, and that ita column may be open to Democrats who take grounds against, the repeal of the Missouu Compromise, which is to be Iba great Wad ing muse to the coming canvas. My objeoi sow is to inform the publie, and my democratic friends ia particular, that at the primary election , held in thin Township. Mr. John Williame and myself were refused our vote on the ground that we disapproved of the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. Eaoh had subscribed to a resolution which was paeeed indorsing the landing principles of (he democ ratio party. But thie wae not enough, in our case. Mr. Williams had already voted for a democratic Anti-Nebraska candidate for Congress, and I bad expressed myself that if two candidates presented themselves for offices of n legislative character, and were likely take called upon to act upon the subject, I should most assuredly vote for the one who was rh favor of restoring that line. Thie wae sufficient. The judges decided that we were no democrats, and could not be allowed to vote. Thie sounded exceedingly funny, in my ears, who had been an active democrat for the last I won It five years, eighteen of which had been spent in Springfield Township, and who had the honor. 6ve years ago, of being nominated as a candidate for a seat in the Legislature by a majority of the democrat!' voters of the county, and to this day, I eheerich the tame democratic truths that I then did. None others were questioned as to their orthodoxy, from what motive I know not. But there is one thing I do know, thai if they had been, the poll Books would not have shown the same footing up. for many heads woo d have fallen, ae well ae our own. It waa no doubt thought that two heads would be sufficient to awe the timid. So no more questions were asked. I paused for a moment, gased upon the chief executioner, and as his antecedents passed in review before roe I could not help exclaiming, Ye Clods ud Hill Pitt:" It will no doubt equally surprise my old line democratic friends, I mean old line friends, not every yearling that choose to aasume that name, simply ü cause he finds himself supporting that portion of lite democratic party who are willing that the blighting curs of elavery may extent to Territory de vote d to Freedom an illegitimate bantling not two years old. The issue is now forced upon me. I cannot, I will not stave it off, Mv course is plain, between Slavery and Freedom, I choose the latter . Ia the palmy days of old fashioned democracy, wss ever heard the cry of Whips to tho rescue? No, their principle carried them through: the power of truth wad right prevailed. What means the cry? Whigs; Whigs: wbigs; save us or we drown Fellow democrats, pause and ask yourselves why these strange cries for help from your former political opponents. Has it any affinity to the alliaaee of France aad England, who have been so long at daggers point, now professedly fighting despotism, but whose soul object, ia to keep down freedom in Europe? How exceedingly humiliating it is to see that . proud democracy which pat ander its feet that great concent rated money power, the national Bank, which there was reason to believe, in time, would subvert the liberty of the people that democracy which had repudiated the slander that American Freemen were not ble to compete with what was termed the pauper labor of Europe, without pro-, as m area la tecnon at tne expense of agriculture, That democracy which bad forever put down that oxtravigant system of internal improvements, state, and national, which was leading to taxation unsu pportable. That democracy which had taken the proud stand against fanatical abolition m the north, and that equally absurd doctrine, disunion of the south, and had iinblazooed upon its banners the only true and safe doctrine, "noninterference with slavery where it now exists." To see so large a portion of that great party following in the wake of men styled leaders, who have stricken down those great barriers to the extention of human servitude, commenced in a spirit of compromise by our revolutionary sires. Men whose souls burned with freedom, and whose lives and fortunes had been periled for the best interests of the human race, how ranch to be regretted, but politics had not become a trade them. When the Territory of Louisiana was pur chased, the same spirit of our re . olutionary fathers actuated tho men of those days. When additional territory was aoquired from Mexico as indemnity for the last war what were the views of the dtrmcrati lep-islature aad senate of Indiana upon the subject of slavery? What were the answers to interogaUts by the legislators, of Oov. Whitcorab who was elected Uoited States Senitor, and w y was he selected in preference to other ptominent democrats? What kind of resolutions did the democratic State Convention pass as ita platform? What gave Indiana's greatest and best Governor, J. A. Wright, bis twenty thousand majority? It was their public declation in favor of tbe freedom of thi territories. Many othv.-r questions might be asked such as what has overthrown the democratic party, th jse things are too unpleasant tor a democrat to dwell upon. Of one thing I would advise these po litical executioners, wherevax you be, m Township, County, or State, that the work you have undertaken in cutting off the heads of every democrat who does sot square with your test, is a Much larger job than you think for and if you get them ill, more blood wiü be spilt, than needed, tofloayour frail bark into oblivion, amidst tbe iaers and execratioha of aver lover offreadom. H. BRÜNDRETT. i T" Ax demos viLut, April 26th, 18.56. Ma. Eorroa: Local items are searcu ia this regbn, in (net there it nothing of local character, worthy of

or comment. We will therefore,

not eonrine oorselvee to that department of news at this time And fur ther we know not that we can giv anything that will be of Interest to

your numerous - readers, thi there is not much excitement in tin political circle. We feel out here ir Posey that we are abundantly able to "la oaf" the old liners here .after, as 1 wt have done in all times past, as far I a as this township ia concerned. Tlu-y boasted before the April election, that they never saw as fair a prospect for a complete victory. I it.ppo.4v i! hopes become some wh at elated, at their "experience meetings" got their "spiritual strength renewed," nml they felt when laboriotf und r it hilerating effects, ret though ever) body like themselves, was ready, und only waited an opportunity to fall into the "sweet embraces (?) of oit! lineism. But they soon saw to their sbagrin, and great disappointment that they were guided in this matter by a blind "spiritual influence." or spirits power," that the Laurels iHey expected to wear, turned out to bo willows, and so will ileverbe. with them in Posey Township, of this trv-y may rest assured. It appear from the result of the vote in in the different townships, that oar Friend Dr. Clifford will nave to fight a little longer in the position at s subaltern or private before he will be promoted. The fact is, there arc many other men in the County, in the ranks of tho old line party, who have followed tho party through "evil as well as good report," who have claims on the party, and will urgo them over the claims, of so recent a convert as the Dr. could set up, and will urge them successfully, too.no doubt. Wait with patience Doc, your lims may come, it you live iong enou ;h As for our old friend "Billy A l im I doot think his prospects of feeding at the public crib are very flattering, perhaps his time mav come, if the people could be made to believe, that the reason he did not can vans tho county with Goodwin last year, after banter ing him publicly, his oats got ripe sooner than he expected when he made the banter, and was compel!' ! to "draw off," and take card of his 'er q ' But some will have it that "I nch Billy made no kind of a show on tlx stump, aotThia friends advised him to go home. Now if his new tTivntil place no higher estimate tharf that on his services, his chances are slim, shure, and he will have to labor eck. oualy, assideously for many years, bofore be will be rewarded. Daa vmes, and B. F. Mullen are to speak at Hulltown to-morrow evening. Oh what a mellow time they will have there. Recon "Dan" wont indulge much, some thinks "Dan" ongbt to takf tin pledge. It wouldn't be a bad idea as he may, before the canvass is over, got to drinking too much, if he dont, as he will be sorely tempted, and oant resist the temptation very well, any how, cant hardly resist when at home, surrounded by both family and friend. "REPUBLICAN." Mr. EotToa: I never fully comprehended what our Saviour me tnf, when ha said, "Some men prefer darkness ratber than light because their dee I are evil," until I noticed so many of the Old Liners shrinking from an in resltifiilion of the Kansas outrages. If so let them, stand up boldly and bear the facts of the case, if they have nothing to fear, and vice versa. But rheir conduct indicated to evel observing mind that they are in the error and are afraid to have the effects of the "Nebraska iniquity" bronght to light. Democratic demagogues may talk largely oi tne great expense, that win est. be incurred by sending this investiga ttngLCommittee to Kansas to ascertain the truth of the statements made by Gov. Reeder and others respecting Missouri aggression and illegal votii p; yet if two hundred thousand dollars were to be spent in catching fugitive slaves, not a word oi disaobetion would be uttered on their part, it would all be right according to Lardoil and Larrabeo's dpctri ic - Napoleon once remarked that it was better to give bad reasons for any unSopular measure than to remain silent, 'he democrat party as rcspexU Kansas have certainly taken his adv. und hare "bad reasons" for the detention of the investigating committee, which, together with their fruii tempts to conceal "Border Ruffianism" and their pro-slavery principle, will resuit in the complete annihilation of the Old Liners in tho North at the coming election. The excitement incident Upon thu appearance of rton. Will Cumback's Kansas speech has not yet died away in these parts. Fome of tho Old Liners are still squirmina over it like a parcel of caterpillars over a hot tire. j Several cases of "Purkins fever" have ! come under my notice since our Hroinuiiory aw was annulifO. 1 instrange disease"isneither contagious nor very prevalent in this immed; tt vicinity. The best antidote that has yet been discovered in this region is" a vim. subscription to tb- fndiana American. If that does not pro ffectual, try it another year, and V p trying tilL recovery is beyond d . Judge Reid's speec delivered iu Brookville some nights ago, has created no little sensation manong the f irmere in this vicinity. T be J udge, as we are credibly informed, said that th Legislature has no right to legislate upon that which we eat and dnuk. 8ome of the farmers think of ire paying their taxes on grain, etc., since the lion. It triM entirely ia accordance tvitli s . the "eternal fitness of things" that tht; men who passed the Nebraska Dili should reject tbe petition oi the people of Kansas. 'oughts should lollow h:s great infamy with another just in the prope r proportion of sise, time and oiicumllano, to show the tint in its full measure, was most fit. Having lathered the greatest lie ever enacted by corrupt politicians, lie could not better preserve his character with his party than by fathvnng the meanest tie, that the Kansas petition was a "forgery." Uu knew, as does every man of ordinary sense in the Union, that (ho people of Kansas did prepare a momorial to Congress and sent it in charge of Col. Lnoe. That the one Lane presented is the one tho people made. Dougiu has no more doubt than he has that he is living. There is not a man in the whole slavery set in the Senate, who did not feel that he Wae"pfttffogg1og," as Wade called it, when he objected to that memorial that its signatures wero all in one hand. They knew that the memorial was genuine, the undoubted expression of the people of Kansas, but because it prayed Kansas to be a Fun Stats, it was rejvoled. The whole secret of (Iiis most unjustifiable conduct lies in that one fact. If ti.e mob-legislature had sent a memorial nrayine admisston fix a ; I iv niate. Us authenticitv TCiiuld noviT ImvH fifi'ii ntirstirinnrl i r. til -if It WOUlcl havo received tbti CUStomnry treatment of rocmorina( and not been kicked contemptuously out of sight. But the petition of rasa people is a fahr subject for derision und abase with thesi) tools of slavery. They allow it no respect, they cover it with charges they know to be substantially fnlse, and throw it away. Tli.it the men who enacted the Nebraska fraud should re jeot a petition as a "brgery," proves nothing against the petition. Such men are cupablo of worse things, if worst things aro possible. The secret of this rejection is not bard to find. The Senate is resolved that Kansas shall be n slare Slate. Mr. Pierce means to mäkelt so if the power of the National Government onu effect it. Every influence, but the one emanating from the Free North, is bent to that end. The petition asks admission is ü l'iui Stute. Ii Iihs to bo rejected in consequtnee, and as the Northern dough-face don't like to face the plsin isSue, "free or slave State." they have started this 'forgery" charge as a "doJc." By proclaiming the memorial a "forgery" they think tbey can escape the neeessity of entertaining it, and at the same lime blind the people as to the real design. We hope the speech of Mr. Warner of Georgia, nnd the resolutions of the Georgia Lfgisktuic, will be kept in mind, with tho fact that the whole South concurs in them, for they will explain much that will otherwise look unaccounlnblein the conduct of the Senate. It is becoming more palpable every day, and this Kansas memorial affair clears up the thickest of the doofe that obscured it, that the 81ave Democracy, with Pierce and Douglas at their head, arc determined that Mas shall be a Slave State, snd that no favor shall be shown to any net or design of those who want it t bu free. Let tho patople of Indiana remember this. Indiana Journal. Mont!vello, ( Ala., ) Herald, thus kicks out of the traces; We will neither support the Platform nor the ticket.
