shall call and examine it carefully soon. We would suggest that the difference between his method of trimming and that of Mr. Clarkson may account for his better hedge. If we

understand Mr. Baird, he only cuts off the upright shoots. Mr. Clarkson trimmed both upright and lateral shoots, so as not to keep the hedge over two feet thick. The result is the hedge at eight years will not turn cattle or pigs. En. Val. Fab.

Wo are often called upon to give advice as to the beat varieties of apples and other fruits for different soils and localities, and we have promised to give some instruction on this subject thro' the Cultivator. This, however, is a more difficult task than most persor.s would suppose. With reference to apples, for instance, one needs to know all the particu

lars in reference to the climate,

soil and location, also the uses for

which the fruit is mainly intended whether for the ordinary wants of a family, or for market purposes, and if for the latter how far to be transported, etc., etc. Taking all these matters into the account, and considering the tastes of persons, and that a supply of fruit is wanted for all

a a sy seasons of the year, how unreasonable it is to suppose that the same assortment will answer for

all persons, places and purposes, or that a dozen or twenty varieties are sufficient for any orchard. The best that our limited

space will allow us to do at this :

and become soft, liable to speck, eta Of this character are the Esopus Spitzeuberg, Baldwin, Hubbardston Nonsuch, and several others. The Northern Spy also gives indications of the same tendency, and in many localities tho Rhode Island Greening, Rox

bury Busse t, and Newtown Pippin

much flesh on one, aa eleven bushels of corn in tho ear will on tho other. In regard to milch cows, 1 find half the corn ground with the cob, will produce as much milk in a week, as the whole amount in tho ear. I find in wintering calves, about half the amount of corn ground with the cob, will keep them growing aud looking as well as tho whole amount fed iu the ear: the same to stock cattle of any ngo will produce tho samo profit, if very old, the profit is greater. In regard to foeding sheep, about half the corn ground with

the cob, will keep them looking as well or fatten them as last, as the whole amount fed in tbe ear or shelled. In regard to hogs, there is about tho gain of one bushel in five, by grinding in the cob, and wetting the meal, and feed it in good troughs. In fat.

tho corn is ground, I have ascer

tained that six bushels and a half will produce as much pork as eight

bushels fed in the ear. I find grinding corn very fine is not good, as it produces looseness in animals, and passes off, before the nutriment is all extracted; but when it is ground with the cob, the case is very different I find that the cob will not digest; it will therefore retain the meal in the animal until the nutrimens is completely out of tho meal, at well as the cob. I have fed an ox on corn, and put a hog in the field with him, and the hog would fat as fast as the ox. I theo fed the ox on meal, and he gained much faster, but the hog grew poorer, I then fed corn and cob meal, and the hog found no benefit from running with the ox. The same resuit with geese and pigs.
