Hay seems not to be used at all, save by a very few, and that only in 8tormv weather. The success of a system such as this, if found to answer here as well as it does in England, would lead to a more general cultivation of turnips, rata bagas and other roots. Trials might be made of molasses. One pint in one and a half gallons of warm water, will moisten from one to bushels of cut straw. A little corn or bean meal will improve it OX SHOKI7IO HORSES THAT OVER. BRACH. I was bred from my youth a blacksmith and farmer, and, whether a natural mechanic or not, I was always very anxious to know the whys and wherefores of things, or more properly speaking, the casualties and preventives.I was also fond of trying experiments upon such things as appeared favorable for improvement. I was generally in the shop with my lather evenings, rainy days, and such other time as I could be spared from' the farm orschool. By being in the shop so much, I obtained the views of the farmers generally, and by that was enabled to make many improvements on the farm. I learned, also, that many farmers entertain very erruneous ideas about blacksmith ing, (and I might add blacksmiths ! too;) still they were bouud to die-1 taie accoruing 10 prejuuices; ns, for instance, one says: "This horse overreaches; I want you to put the front shoes as far forward as possible, and set the hind shoes as far back, or he will tear them off. ' I would sometimes trv to j " reason the case by saying the way to prevent a horse from over retching, is to augment the speed of the front feet, and retard the motion of' the hind ones; but in order to accomplish that, I shall havo to reverse your directions. Some who had little or no mcchanical genius, would cut short all arcument, and say. "follow mv directions or else not shoo the horse." My way is, to make the toe-corks very low, and standing a little uuder, and the shoes set as far back as convenient on the forward feet, with high heel-corks, so as to let them roll over as soon as possible. On the hind feet, I havo the heel cork low, and the too-cork high, projecting forward, thus keeping back tho hi od foot, while ooming up over a high toe-cork, giving time to the forward foot to get out of the way. If thus shod, the horse will travel clean, without a click, and his speed willhe increased on a trot fifteen or twenty SBOonda in a mile.' New England Farmer. no viicj a asifataF.N ox. Noticing in the Stock Register, for August, an extract headed "How to move a Sullen Ox," it brought forcicibly to my mind my little experience in tbat matter. Wheu a boy, I frequently bad the management of oxen, one of which was at times particularly ullen or baulky, m we then termed it, and my ingenuity and wit wero put to test to devise some moans to induce tho sullen animal to move. At last 1 hit upon a plan, as the sequel will show, which efTuctually acoom plished my purpose, and cured hhn in a meandro of his hanging back propensity. On u certain day in wintor I was sent hauling wood with the oxen and sled. My road led over a bridge, and up a short hut quite steep hill. Having arrived at tho foot of tho hill on tho bridge, with n load, my to un come to a dead stund still, and as coaxing and whipping proved of no benefit, I bethought me of procuring tbo services of the old Vom Cat, and applying him. I found him quietly sleeping on the hearth, and taking him iu my arms, quickly retraced my steps to the oxen. My purpose was to apply the cat to tho back of tbe ox and draw him backwards by tho tail. In cool as well as cold weather, the complaint is often made, "the butter won't come." A writer in the Maine Farmer says: "The trouble arises from not getting the cream properly warmed at the moment of churning. It must be when put into the churn; not to be warmed, and then churned bye-and-bye, whether warm or cold; but warm it, and then churn at once. Butter never came in the world when it was cold. I have warmed the cream ever since the middle of August Ihe cellar was so cold that when the cream was brought up stairs it would not come until it had been slightly warmed.
